Book Biological Sound Scattering Studies Part I Initial Investigations in the Gulf of Mexico and Western North Atlantic

Download or read book Biological Sound Scattering Studies Part I Initial Investigations in the Gulf of Mexico and Western North Atlantic written by Bernard J. Zahuranec and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1964 the Acoustical Oceanography Branch of the U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office has conducted bioacoustic investigations of deep scattering layers (DSL) in the Atlantic Ocean. The initial investigations before May 1967 were conducted primarily in three regions: the Gulf of Mexico, the southwestern Sargasso Sea, and the Gulf Stream. Biological collections at discrete depths were attempted with a six foot Isaacs-Kidd Midwater Trawl and a Be Multiple Plankton Sampler. The biological collections were sorted and identified to species (fish and some invertebrates) or to major groups (most invertebrates). The most abundant kinds of fishes collected belong to the families Myctophidae (Lanternfishes) and Gonostomatidae (bristlemouths). In general, 2 or 3 species of fishes in a collection were found to be more abundant than the rest, often making up the majority of fish in a sample. Investigation of the night surface scattering layers in the Gulf of Mexico in March 1967 indicates that the fish in these layers tend to be concentrated in a narrow depth range. Measurements in the Sargasso Sea in November 1965 show some correlation between the depth of occurrence of a deep scattering layer, an oxygen deficient layer, and an abundance of organisms. Collections from both areas as well as in the Gulf Stream agree with the concept that all three are regions of low productivity. Although a strong correlation was not established between DSL occurrence and the biological collections, these initial investigations suggest several findings that merit more intensive body. Book Ultrasonic Scattering in Biological Tissues

Download or read book Ultrasonic Scattering in Biological Tissues written by K. Kirk Shung and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-09-16 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultrasonic Scattering in Biological Tissues contains 14 chapters written by world-renowned authorities who describe current work related to theoretical and experimental aspects of ultrasonic scattering phenomenon in biological tissues. Introductory material regarding ultrasonic scattering in biological tissues is presented, followed by discussions on theoretical treatments, experimental approaches, in vitro results on selective tissues, in vivo results on various tissues, and the current status of quantitative backscatter imaging. Ultrasonic Scattering in Biological Tissues will be an excellent reference for biomedical engineers, ultrasound specialists, biophysicists, and radiology researchers.

Book Proceedings of an International Symposium on Biological Sound Scattering in the Ocean Held at Airlie House Conference Center Warrenton Virginia on March 31 April 2 1970

Download or read book Proceedings of an International Symposium on Biological Sound Scattering in the Ocean Held at Airlie House Conference Center Warrenton Virginia on March 31 April 2 1970 written by and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Maury Center for Ocean Science sponsored a three-day international gathering of scientists to assess current understanding of biological sound scattering in the oceans. The book is the record of that assessment. It includes both formal invited contributions and informal discussion sessions. The participants first examined the biology of scattering layers, dealing with environmental, ecological and physiological aspects as well as the distribution and abundance of various scattering organisms. The acoustic manifestations of sound scattering, as well as some of its geographic features, were considered on the second day of the conference. The third day was given over to studies employing both biological and acoustic approaches.
