Book Human Biomonitoring for Environmental Chemicals

Download or read book Human Biomonitoring for Environmental Chemicals written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-11-30 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biomonitoring—a method for measuring amounts of toxic chemicals in human tissues—is a valuable tool for studying potentially harmful environmental chemicals. Biomonitoring data have been used to confirm exposures to chemicals and validate public health policies. For example, population biomonitoring data showing high blood lead concentrations resulted in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) regulatory reduction of lead in gasoline; biomonitoring data confirmed a resultant drop in blood lead concentrations. Despite recent advances, the science needed to understand the implications of the biomonitoring data for human health is still in its nascent stages. Use of the data also raises communication and ethical challenges. In response to a congressional request, EPA asked the National Research Council to address those challenges in an independent study. Human Biomonitoring for Environmental Chemicals provides a framework for improving the use of biomonitoring data including developing and using biomarkers (measures of exposure), research to improve the interpretation of data, ways to communicate findings to the public, and a review of ethical issues.

Download or read book Monitoring Human Tissues for Toxic Substances written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1991-02-01 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Human Monitoring Program (NHMP) identifies concentrations of specific chemicals in human tissues, including toxicologic testing and risk assessment determinations. This volume evaluates the current activities of the NHMP; identifies important scientific, technical, and programmatic issues; and makes recommendations regarding the design of the program and use of its products.

Book INDUSTRIAL CHEMICAL EXPOSURE GUIDELINES FOR BIOLOGICAL MONITORING

Download or read book INDUSTRIAL CHEMICAL EXPOSURE GUIDELINES FOR BIOLOGICAL MONITORING written by LAUWERYS RR. and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BIOLOGICAL MONITORING OF EXPOSURE TO INDUSTRIAL CHEMICALS MEANS EVALUATION OF THE INTERNAL EXPOSURE OF THE ORGANISM TO A CHEMICAL AGENT (IE, THE INTERNAL DOSE) BY A BIOLOGICAL METHOD. INTERNAL EXPOSURE OR INTERNAL DOSE MAY MEAN THE AMOUNT OF THE CHEMICAL RECENTLY ABSORBED, THEAMOUNT ALREADY STORED IN THE ORGANISM (BODY BURDEN), OR THE AMOUNT OF THE ACTIVE CHEMICAL SPECIES BOUND TO THE SITES OF ACTION. THREE TYPES OF MEASUREMENTS ARE USUALLY SELECTED TO EVALUATE THE INTERNAL DOSE: 1. THE CONCENTRATION OF THE SUBSTANCE ITSELF IN VARIOUS BIOLOGICAL MEDIA (BLOOD, URINE, EXPIRED AIR, HAIR, ADIPOSETISSUE, SALIVA, ETC); 2. THE CONCENTRATION OF ITS BIOTRANSFORMATION PRODUCTS (METABOLITES) IN THE SAME MEDIA; 3. THE DETERMINATION OF NON-ADVERSE BIOLOGICAL CHANGES THAT ARE THE RESULTS OF THE REACTION OF THE ORGANISM TO EXPOSURE. THE MAIN GOAL OF BIOLOGICAL MONITORING OF EXPOSURE IS EITHER TO INSURE THAT THE CURRENT OR PAST EXPOSURE OF THE WORKERS IS SAFE (IE, DOES NOT ENTAIL AN UNACCEPTABLE HEALTH RISK) OR TO DETECT POTENTIAL EXCESSIVE EXPOSURE BEFORE THE OCCURRENCE OF DETECTABLE ADVERSE HEALTH EFFECTS. IT IS ESSENTIALLY A PREVENTIVE MEDICAL ACTIVITY. AUTHORS ABSTRACT ABRIDGED.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This definitive source provides practicing professionals and students in the occupational, environmental, and public health and safety fields with the functional basics of biological monitoring. The author examines how environmental exposures to particular chemicals are related to concentrations of markers in body tissues and fluids. Biological Monitoring integrates the applied sciences of industrial/environmental hygiene, epidemiology, public health, occupational medicine, toxicology, biochemistry, and analytical chemistry with the basic sciences to interpret the connections between exposures and lifestyle/environmental influences, and their effects on humans. This comprehensive introduction provides dependable, detailed coverage of: * monitoring for harmful substances in the workplace * the benefits and limitations of testing for critical levels of toxic materials in bodily tissues and fluids * state-of-the-art developments in biological monitoring * a wide variety of toxic chemicals and selected physical agents * immunoassays * monitoring for HIV and AIDS * importance of exposure routes * the most up-to-date methods of health and medical surveillance * the interpretation of adduct concentrations * biological exposure indices * biological monitoring of pesticides * biological monitoring in the home and around hazardous waste sites * and much more This essential, compelling guide is the only inclusive and thorough introduction available. Biological Monitoring's rigorous, accessible, interdisciplinary approach makes this an invaluable reference and text for industrial and environmental hygienists, physicians, pharmacists, nurses, epidemiologists, toxicologists, laboratory technicians, chemical engineers, science graduate students, and the environmentally concerned.
