Book Human Biomonitoring for Environmental Chemicals

Download or read book Human Biomonitoring for Environmental Chemicals written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-10-30 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biomonitoring—a method for measuring amounts of toxic chemicals in human tissues—is a valuable tool for studying potentially harmful environmental chemicals. Biomonitoring data have been used to confirm exposures to chemicals and validate public health policies. For example, population biomonitoring data showing high blood lead concentrations resulted in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) regulatory reduction of lead in gasoline; biomonitoring data confirmed a resultant drop in blood lead concentrations. Despite recent advances, the science needed to understand the implications of the biomonitoring data for human health is still in its nascent stages. Use of the data also raises communication and ethical challenges. In response to a congressional request, EPA asked the National Research Council to address those challenges in an independent study. Human Biomonitoring for Environmental Chemicals provides a framework for improving the use of biomonitoring data including developing and using biomarkers (measures of exposure), research to improve the interpretation of data, ways to communicate findings to the public, and a review of ethical issues.

Book Assessment of Toxic Agents at the Workplace

Download or read book Assessment of Toxic Agents at the Workplace written by A. Berlin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1.1 Organisation and aims This International Seminar, organised jointly by the Com mission of the European Communities and the United States authorities (Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) has brought together more than 150 participants from the Member States of the European Community, from the United States, and also from Greece, Finland, Sweden and Switzer land. The aim of the Seminar was to examine the roles of ambient and biological monitoring in protecting the health of workers exposed to toxic agents and to define a multidisciplinary approach to this monitoring. To achieve this aim expertise from the following disciplines, directly or indirectly involved with monitoring, was called upon: medicine, industrial hygiene, nursing, biology, engi neering, chemistry, epidemiology, statistics, economics and jurisprudence, and representatives from trade unions, indus try and government agencies. The difference in concepts that each of these disciplines has of monitoring and of its role in the team is fully reflected in the papers. 1.2 Current trends in occupational health and hygiene (as related to monitoring).

Book Health Surveillance of Individual Workers Exposed to Chemical Agents

Download or read book Health Surveillance of Individual Workers Exposed to Chemical Agents written by Wilfried R.F. Notten and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early in 1985, a meeting was held to discuss the organization of a work shop in honour of Professor Reinier L. Zielhuis on the occasion of his retirement on November 30,1986. Various themes for such a workshop were considered, but it was Zielhuis himself, who ultimately selected "Health surveillance of individual workers exposed to chemical agents" as the theme of the workshop. Although this topic is of the utmost im portance for occupational health practice, it is also a very difficult one, given our currently limited knowledge on the subject. The choice of this topic is characteristic of Reinier Zielhuis, a scientist and scholar who throughout his career has been deeply concerned with the health and health risks of workers. Because he regards occupational and environmental exposure - including life style - as two aspects of the total exposure to chemical and physical factors, he emphasizes the need to assess the impact of this total exposure on workers' health. The impact of total exposure probably detennines to a large extent the in dividual variability in response. This was the main reason why he selected the above-mentioned topic for the workshop.

Book Biological Monitoring of Chemical Exposure in the Workplace Guidelines

Download or read book Biological Monitoring of Chemical Exposure in the Workplace Guidelines written by Who Unit of Occupational Safety and published by Occupational Health for All. This book was released on 1996-12 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides guidelines for the biological monitoring of occupational exposure to four metals (aluminium, arsenic, cobalt, and nickel), three solvents (benzene, methanol, and methylene chloride), two groups of pesticides (dithiocarbamates and pyrethroids), aromatic amines, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Guidelines for each chemical follow a common framework. The chemical is first introduced in terms of its physical and chemical properties, possible occupational and non-occupational exposures, data on toxicokinetics and toxic effects, and a comparison of currently available biological indicators of exposure. Recommended biomarkers are then discussed in terms of suggested methods of sampling and analysis, and guidelines for the interpretation of test results.

Book Exposure Assessment for Epidemiology and Hazard Control

Download or read book Exposure Assessment for Epidemiology and Hazard Control written by American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-10-29 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What agents should be measured? How should measurement be performed and what averaging time should be used for the measurement? What sampling strategy should be employed to characterize exposures across individuals, locations, and time? What durations of exposure should be characterized? What statistical descriptors should be used to relate exposure to effect? Exposure Assessment for Epidemiology and Hazard Control examines various approaches to answering these and other important questions. Other topics discussed include the measurement of current exposures (e.g., vapors, gases, aerosols, and complex mixtures); the application of toxicological relationships, including biological markers and sample models; an epidemiological evaluation of exposure-effect relationships, including new methods for effect evaluation and models for population exposure estimates; and strategies for exposure assessment, such as biological sampling interpretation through toxicokinetic processes. This important new volume contains essential information for industrial hygienists, epidemiologists, occupational health physicians, toxicologists, and immunologists.

Book Biological Monitoring of Exposure to Chemicals

Download or read book Biological Monitoring of Exposure to Chemicals written by H. K. Dillon and published by Wiley-Interscience. This book was released on 1991-01-16 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This companion volume to Biological Monitoring of Exposure to Chemicals: Organic Compounds presents recent results from both field and laboratory studies investigating the presence of metals and organometallic compounds in biological media. A distinguished list of contributors describe studies which assess the extent of human exposure to metals, and recount fundamental studies at the molecular level, such as investigation of immunotoxicological effects of the interaction of metals during absorption and biological transformation. There is also a study of the biological monitoring of environmental contamination that demonstrates how biological samples determine the transport and fate of metals in the environment.
