Book Cryopreservation and low temperature biology in blood transfusion

Download or read book Cryopreservation and low temperature biology in blood transfusion written by C.Th. Smit Sibinga and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theme of this 14th International Symposium on Blood Transfusion is closely related to the work and scientific contributions of the Dutch cryobiology pioneer Dr. Herman W. Krijnen of the Dutch Red Cross Central Laboratory. Dr. Krijnen was known and respected in the national and interna tional blood transfusion community as an extremely competent scientist and a beloved and admired colleague. Dr. Krijnen was intentionally honoured with the invitation to open this symposium on cryopreservation and low temperature biology in blood transfusion and be the guest of honour at this event. Unfortunately, Dr. Krijnen suddenly died on the first of June 1989. In honour and mem ory of Dr. Krijnen this symposium will therefore be dedicated to him. Since the lOth International Symposium on Blood Transfusion in 1985 highlighted the theme of "Future developments in blood banking", major changes have occurred in the blood banking world. Most of these changes were forced upon the Blood Banks by the fear of spreading AIDS through contaminated donations. This not only led to the wide spread testing of blood, but also to a more appropriate counselling of the community and the blood donors in specific. Additionally, virus inacti vation techniques were introduced for those components derived from multiple donations and intended for a regular transfusion in haemophi lia patients and others.

Book Low Temperature Biology of Foodstuffs

Download or read book Low Temperature Biology of Foodstuffs written by John Hawthorn and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-04-20 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Low Temperature Biology of Foodstuffs describes the concept of low temperature biology and its application in the food industry. This book is divided into 23 chapters and begins with descriptions of several low temperature processes, such as nucleation, ice crystal growth, and freezing. The succeeding chapters deal with the protective mechanisms in frost-hardy plants, the physico-chemical changes in foods during freezing and storage, and the influence of cold storage, freezing, and thawing microbial and population of several foodstuffs. These topics are followed by discussions of the principles of freezing and low-temperature storage of fruit and vegetables. Other chapters explore the process of gelation, the freezing and frozen storage of fish muscle and meat. The final chapters look into the subjective evaluations of frozen food quality, including their physico-chemical properties. This book will prove useful to food scientists and manufacturers.

Download or read book The Biological Revolution written by Gerald Weissmann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Basic biological research is not in trouble, but support for this cultural product is perhaps more fragile than it should be. We have developed, in this country, in Europe, and in Japan a triumphant record of research accomplishment that has rev olutionized our vision of the cell, the body, and the environ ment. The genetic code has been unraveled, the means of neuromuscular transmission have been elucidated, we know the fine detail of the cell's small geography, and we can de scribe the genes of mouse and man in chemical terms. But it is less clearly perceived by laity and scientist how this new revo lution in biology has been of use in the service of a better medicine or environment. The aim of this series of essays, which grew out of a symposium at the First International Congress of Cell Biology, is to instruct us all in the use that has been made of our new knowledge. In the fields of cancer, behavior, reproduction, genetic engineering, and environmental monitoring, practical results of our new knowledge are already apparent and more are just at hand. But neither the general public nor scientists working in their own narrow disciplines necessarily ap preciate these developments. Perhaps it is all just too new, too "experimental," to permit anyone to gain a proper perspective on what we have done or have the potential of doing.

Book Some Biological Techniques in Electron Microscopy

Download or read book Some Biological Techniques in Electron Microscopy written by D.F. Parsons and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some Biological Techniques in Electron Microscopy discusses the problems that hinder or prevent progress in biological electron microscopy. This book explores the great potential of electron microscope for solving several pressing medical and biological research problems. Organized into five chapters, this book starts with an overview of the primary goal of biological electron microscopy, which is the visualization of atoms in biological molecules and structures. This text proceeds with a discussion of the freezing methods of electron microscopy in which some of the artifacts producing steps of environmental techniques are eliminated. Other chapters consider the objective of electron microscopy to resolve successively small objects, in the limiting instance, single atoms in amorphous structures. The final chapter deals with processing tissues for electron microscopy wherein temperature, agitation, pressure, and humidity can be controlled throughout the operation. Biologists, biophysicists, physicists, electron microscopists, and medical researchers will find this book extremely useful.
