Book Management of Insect Pests in Vegetable Crops

Download or read book Management of Insect Pests in Vegetable Crops written by Ramanuj Vishwakarma and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-04-13 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new book on the sustainable management of insect pests in important vegetables offers valuable management strategies in detail. It focuses on eco-friendly technology and approaches to mitigating the damage caused by insect pests with special reference to newer insecticides. Chapters in the volume provide an introduction to vegetable entomology and go on to present a plethora of research on sustainable eco-friendly pest management strategies for root vegetables, spice crops, tuber crops, and more. Vegetable crops that are infested by several insect pests from the nursery to the harvesting stage cause enormous crop losses. Given that it is estimated that up to 40 percent of global crops are lost to agricultural pests each year, new research on effective management strategies is vital. The valuable information provided in this book will be very helpful for faculty and advanced-level students, scientists and researchers, policymakers, and others involved in pest management for vegetable crops.

Book Economic Insect Pests of Brassica

Download or read book Economic Insect Pests of Brassica written by Muhammad Imran and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brassica is a genus of plants in the mustard family that includes cauliflower, sprouts, broccoli and cabbage. Plants of the brassica family are rich sources of biologically active substance. The beneficial effects of brassica vegetables on human health have been somewhat linked to phytochemicals. They prevent oxidative stress, induce detoxification enzymes, stimulate immune system and decrease the risk of cancers. Crucifers are the important winter crops grown widely in tropical and temperate regions of the world, giving yield of 50.7 million tons. It is cultivated around the year over an area of 8263 hectares in Karnataka with production of 23.63 tons per hectare. Cauliflower and cabbage are the most common crops throughout the world. Diamondback moth (DBM) caused losses of about 16 million dollars by causing a 2.5% damage annually. There are many insect pests that attacked these crops and most common are diamondback moth, tobacco cutworm, aphid, jassid, cabbage worm and many others. The most important of these insect pests is the diamondback moth Plutella xylostella also called cabbage moth that belongs to Plutellidae. There are many controlled strategies including chemical control, biological control, physical control and many other methods. This study contributes to the literature offering understandings about the insect pests of brassica and their best management techniques.

Book Integrated Pest Management of Tropical Vegetable Crops

Download or read book Integrated Pest Management of Tropical Vegetable Crops written by Rangaswamy Muniappan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is an edited book with chapters written by multi-disciplinary specialists in their specific subject areas. It covers development of IPM components and packaging them for individual vegetable crops specifically targeted to tropical countries. Scientific background for IPM components or tactics will be included. There will be case studies of IPM packages developed and implemented in different countries. The concept of IPM has been in existence for the past six decades; however, a practical holistic program has not been developed and implemented for vegetable crops, in the developing countries. Currently the IPM adoption rate in the tropics is minimal and there is a need for implementation of IPM technologies that are environmentally safe, economical, and socially acceptable. We believe that adoption and implementation of IPM provided in this book will lead to significant reduction in crop losses and mitigate adverse impacts of pesticide use in the tropics. This book is an outcome 20 years of research, development and implementation of the IPM CRSP, a project supported by USAID and administered by Virginia Tech in several developing countries along the tropical belt in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean.

Book Improving Biocontrol of Plutella Xylostella

Download or read book Improving Biocontrol of Plutella Xylostella written by Alan Kirk and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plutella xylostella (DBM) is a key pest of crucifers resistant to many insecticides and some crystalendotoxins. Biological control based IPM and classical biocontrol have had varied success. How can it be improved? This book presents key papers and the proceedings of an international symposium held in Montpellier (France) in October 2002. The status of Plutella and control measures used in different areas of the world are discussed, and recommendations for improving biocontrol are made.

Book Integrating Biological Control and Chemical Control of Cabbage Caterpillar Pests

Download or read book Integrating Biological Control and Chemical Control of Cabbage Caterpillar Pests written by Emily Kathryn Linkous and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Lepidopteran pests Plutella xylostella, Pieris rapae, and Trichoplusia ni are the major species that attack crops in the family Brassicaceae. They are typically controlled by insecticide application, but there are parasitoid species that contribute to mortality. However, parasitoids alone are typically unable to exert sufficient control to reduce pest numbers below economic thresholds. Pest density tends to be lower in more diverse systems, including those that integrate flowering plants that parasitoids use as food resources. These resources are lacking in most agricultural landscapes. Parasitoids tend to be negatively impacted by exposure to broad-spectrum insecticides.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Handbook of Vegetable Pests, Second Edition, provides two types of diagnostic aids: the easy-to-use "guides to pests of vegetable crops", which guides the reader to the most likely pests of each vegetable crop based on the portion of the plant attacked and the category of pest; and the more technical dichotomous keys for identification of many of the difficult-to-identify species. It includes over 300 common and occasional pest species, detailing the geographic distribution of vegetable pests, host plant relationships, natural enemies, damage, life history, and methods of control and damage prevention. - Presents a current and comprehensive synthesis of vetted information for the support of both commercial and home vegetable production - Includes over 300 common and occasional pest species, or species complexes, known to affect vegetables grown in the United States and Canada - Summarizes the important findings of the last 150 years - Provides citations to the original literature
