Excerpt: ...at various times to fill school offices in Branch county, and was active in the support of good government. AUGUSTUS LUSK. When Augustus Lusk passed away Calhoun county lost one of its pioneer settlers a man whose identification with this section of the state dated from a very early period in the development and improvement of southern Michigan. Moreover, he had through a long business career displayed the commendable traits of character which not only win success but also gain the respect, confidence and good will of his fellow men. He was born on the 24th of July, 1809, in the town of Victor, Ontario county, New York. His father, John Lusk, a native of Stockbridge, Massachusetts, accompanied his parents to Victor, New York, in early boyhood, the family becoming pioneer settlers of that' locality. After attaining to manhood he became a prominent and influential factor in community affairs and his labors aided in shaping the public policy of his county. In 1812 he enlistedfor service in the second war with-Great Britain and in 1814 in recognitioh of gallant conduct and meritorious service on the field of battle he was promoted to the rank of colonel. In the engagement at Black Rock he was taken prisoner and with other of the war captives was sent to Montreal, Canada, where, after three months he was exchanged. On obtaining his release he returned to Victor and re-, sumed the occupation of farming, remaining in that locality until the spring of 1836, when he and his son John came to Calhoun county, Michigan, to purchase land for a new home, desiring to enjoy the advantages which might accrue from a residence upon the frontier.
