Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biographical Catalogue of the Princeton Theological Seminary, 1815-1932 A few minor changes should be noted, however. Instead of recording the special and graduate students in two separate lists at the end of the Catalogue according to the year of matriculation, they have been incorporated in the body of the book, the special students appearing in the second group of the class with which they would have graduated had they taken the full course; the graduate students in the second group of the year in which they did their first graduate study at Princeton Seminary. Thus, in every class will appear two groups, listed alphabetically. In the first group are those who completed the full course, in the second the special students, the graduate students, and those who did not com plete the full course. In listing the faculty a brief biographical sketch of those not alumni of the Seminary has been added. For data regarding all other professors, the reader is referred to the Index of Alumni. Many of the old abbreviations have been changed and these, together with the new, are given in a single index. Because of the limited space and time no attempt has been made to present statistical summaries at the end of the volume. The Catalogue is that of 1894 revised and brought to date, with one marked difference. The students are no longer classified by the year of matriculation, whether belonging to one class or another; but are arranged in their proper classes. It is believed that this change will be welcomed by all former students. It has necessitated an entire recasting of the Catalogue, and in the earlier years has been attended with much difficulty. Indeed, with the first few classes it has been impossible to make an accurate classification, there being no record as to which class a student joined on entering the Seminary. The first published list of the students in the three classes, as far as known, is dated January, 1821. In the present Catalogue the first class is given as that of 1815, although in one instance the student might, perhaps, be given more properly as of 1813 or 1814. The classes have been divided into two parts, those who completed the full course and received a certificate of graduation, and those who did not. There was difficulty here in the earliest years. The first rule for the granting of such certificates after three years and on examina tion was made by the General Assembly of 1819. The Catalogue will show why it was that the General Assembly so often complained of the fact that so many students failed to complete their full course in the Seminary. The Special Students have been given after the others and listed by the year Of matriculation, as they Were not regular members of any particular class. For the first time, all those who came to Princeton Seminary for graduate courses only have been included in the Catalogue, and are to be found at the close of the volume, classified by the year of matricula tion. The main hindrance in rectifying this gap has been finding a method with which to approach a very difficult historiographical problem. The Invisible Irish endeavours to fill this blank spot in the historical record. Rankin Sherling imaginatively uses the various bits of available data to sketch the first outline of the shape of Irish Presbyterian migration to America in the nineteenth century. Using the migration of Irish Presbyterian ministers as "tracers" of a larger migration, Sherling demonstrates that eighteenth-century migration of Protestants reveals much about the completely unknown nineteenth-century migration. An original and creative blueprint of Irish Presbyterian migration in the nineteenth century, The Invisible Irish calls into question many of the assumptions that the history of Irish migration to America is built upon.
