Book The Natural Moral and Political History of Jamaica and the Territories thereon Depending

Download or read book The Natural Moral and Political History of Jamaica and the Territories thereon Depending written by James Knight and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2021-05-19 with total page 740 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1737 and 1746, James Knight—a merchant, planter, and sometime Crown official and legislator in Jamaica—wrote a massive two-volume history of the island. The first volume provided a narrative of the colony’s development up to the mid-1740s, while the second offered a broad survey of most aspects of Jamaican life as it had developed by the third and fourth decades of the eighteenth century. Completed not long before his death in the winter of 1746–47 and held in the British Library, this work is now published for the first time. Well researched and intelligently critical, Knight’s work is not only the most comprehensive account of Jamaica’s ninety years as an English colony ever written; it is also one of the best representations of the provincial mentality as it had emerged in colonial British America between the founding of Virginia and 1750. Expertly edited and introduced by renowned scholar Jack Greene, this volume represents a colonial Caribbean history unique in its contemporary perspective, detail, and scope.

Download or read book Out of Many One People written by James A. Delle and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2011-06-30 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a source of colonial wealth and a crucible for global culture, Jamaica has had a profound impact on the formation of the modern world system. From the island's economic and military importance to the colonial empires it has hosted and the multitude of ways in which diverse people from varied parts of the world have coexisted in and reacted against systems of inequality, Jamaica has long been a major focus of archaeological studies of the colonial period. This volume assembles for the first time the results of nearly three decades of historical archaeology in Jamaica. Scholars present research on maritime and terrestrial archaeological sites, addressing issues such as: the early Spanish period at Seville la Nueva; the development of the first major British settlement at Port Royal; the complexities of the sugar and coffee plantation system, and the conditions prior to, and following, the abolition of slavery in Jamaica. The everyday life of African Jamaican people is examined by focusing on the development of Jamaica's internal marketing system, consumer behavior among enslaved people, iron-working and ceramic-making traditions, and the development of a sovereign Maroon society at Nanny Town. Out of Many, One People paints a complex and fascinating picture of life in colonial Jamaica, and demonstrates how archaeology has contributed to heritage preservation on the island.

Excerpt: ...persisting in the legitimate, or unjust persecution of the refractory attorney-general, was reluctantly dissolved by proclamation. The high office of attorney-general seems to have been an object of popular and peculiar jealousy. Either the individuals who successively filled, or the parties who constantly opposed it, must have been influenced by very unworthy motives. At the distance of a century it is unfair to judge harshly of either party; for it may be observed, that single acts of virtue and of vice can seldom be weighed against ach other; but as it is possible, and barely possible, that truth and justice may be supported by means most adverse to their nature, we may be allowed to pause before we pronounce either Kelly guilty, or the Assembly oppressive. At a period of doubt and distraction, when the attorney-general was, I believe universally, a member of Assembly, he might be an object of suspicion, as a vigilant spy and a diligent reporter to the Governor, into whose most secret councils his office admitted him. He might have betrayed that trust, or he might have been a traitor to the Assembly. It was an office difficult, if not impossible, to execute with satisfaction to both parties; and it was afterwards attached to the intermediate branch of the legislature, where it is independent of either, but connected with both. It is far more easy to fall below, than to rise above, the common level of morality; and although a few guilty days may perhaps be found in the annals of Jamaican jurisprudence, yet, in the general tenour of their conduct, the high offices of colonial justice have been filled by men virtuous, temperate, and skilful, --the friends of humanity and the protectors of the people. A tremendous hurricane now added..
