Book A Pictorial History of Arkansas s Old State House

Download or read book A Pictorial History of Arkansas s Old State House written by Mary L. Kwas and published by University of Arkansas Press. This book was released on 2011-04-01 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arkansas's Old State House, arguably the most famous building in the state, was conceived during the territorial period and has served through statehood. A History of Arkansas's Old State House traces the history of the architecture and purposes of the remarkable building. The history begins with Gov. John Pope's ideas for a symbolic state house for Arkansas and continues through the construction years and an expansion in 1885. After years of deterioration, the building was abandoned by the state government, and the Old State House then became a medical school and office building. Kwas traces the subsequent fight for the building's preservation on to its use today as a popular museum of Arkansas history and culture. Brief biographies of secretaries of state, preservationists, caretakers, and others are included, and the book is generously illustrated with early and seldom-seen photographs, drawings, and memorabilia.

Book Arkansas Forgotten Land of Plenty

Download or read book Arkansas Forgotten Land of Plenty written by Ronald R. Switzer and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2019-10-14 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first decades of the 1800s, white Americans entered the rugged lands of Arkansas, which they had little explored before. They established new towns and developed commercial enterprises alongside Native Americans indigenous to Arkansas and other tribes and nations that had relocated there from the East. This history is also the story of Arkansas's people, and is told through numerous biographies, highlighting early life in frontier Arkansas over a period of 200 years. The book provides a categorical look at commerce and portrays the social diversity represented by both prominent and common Arkansans--all grappling for success against extraordinary circumstances.

Book United States District Courts and Judges of Arkansas 1836 1960

Download or read book United States District Courts and Judges of Arkansas 1836 1960 written by Frances Mitchell Ross and published by University of Arkansas Press. This book was released on 2016-05-02 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book begins with statehood and continues with Congress's decision to expand jurisdiction of the original 1836 District Court of Arkansas to include the vast Indian Territory to the west. The territory's formidable size and rampant lawlessness brought in an overwhelming number of cases. The situation was only somewhat mitigated in 1851, when Congress split the state into eastern and western districts, which were still served by just one judge who travelled between the two courts. A new judgeship for the Western District was created in 1871, and new seats for that court were established, but it wasn't until 1896 that Congress finally ended all jurisdiction of Arkansas's Western District Court over the Indian Territory.
