Book Managing Socio ecological Production Landscapes and Seascapes for Sustainable Communities in Asia

Download or read book Managing Socio ecological Production Landscapes and Seascapes for Sustainable Communities in Asia written by Osamu Saito and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-02-10 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book presents up-to-date analyses of community-based approaches to sustainable resource management of SEPLS (socio-ecological production landscapes and seascapes) in areas where a harmonious relationship between the natural environment and the people who inhabit it is essential to ensure community and environmental well-being as well as to build resilience in the ecosystems that support this well-being. Understanding SEPLS and the forces of change that can weaken their resilience requires the integration of knowledge across a wide range of academic disciplines as well as from indigenous knowledge and experience. Moreover, given the wide variation in the socio-ecological makeup of SEPLS around the globe, as well as in their political and economic contexts, individual communities will be at the forefront of developing the measures appropriate for their unique circumstances. This in turn requires robust communication systems and broad participatory approaches. Sustainability science (SuS) research is highly integrated, participatory and solutions driven, and as such is well suited to the study of SEPLS. Through case studies, literature reviews and SuS analyses, the book explores various approaches to stakeholder participation, policy development and appropriate action for the future of SEPLS. It provides communities, researchers and decision-makers at various levels with new tools and strategies for exploring scenarios and creating future visions for sustainable societies.

Book Framing ecosystem based adaptation to climate change

Download or read book Framing ecosystem based adaptation to climate change written by Mokhlesur Rahman and published by IUCN. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent increase in exposure to natural hazards among the communities of Bangladesh is linked to the new generation of threats posed by climate variability and change resulting from anthropogenic activity. Adaptation is not a new approach, but there are still a number of challenges inherent in adaptation and in building resilience to climate-induced threats. This documents emphasizes the adoption of ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) to climate change: restoration, enhancement, conservation and wise use of natural resources with the engagement of local communities so as to enable natural ecosystems to function properly and deliver services, which in turns builds societal resilience to the impacts of climate change. This report describes six different types of EbA currently being practiced in the coastal zone of Bangladesh, and an analysis is made in line with the ecosystem services derived from such ecosystem-based interventions. Finally, the report suggests approaches for effective planning, design and implementation of EbA schemes aimed at building social-ecological resilience.

Book Forest conservation in protected areas of Bangladesh

Download or read book Forest conservation in protected areas of Bangladesh written by Mohammad Shaheed Hossain Chowdhury and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book dealt with a number of issues under the broad subject matter of protected area focusing on the policy of collaborative management as a means to augment the forest conservation activities and enhance community development in Bangladesh. Studies covered in the book emerged with the success stories of protected area co-management, both in terms of community development and biodiversity conservation. Significant level of development was noticed in the socio-economic conditions of the surrounding communities. Empowerment and improved social dignity of women participants signifies the initiation of co-management approach. The principles of participatory governance were found reasonably well reflected in legal and policy frameworks. Based on the lessons from the studies, a general metaphysical model, namely ‘Spider-web model of protected area co-management’ has been developed that can be potentially applicable in countries where local communities rely heavily on protected areas.

Book Biodiversity and Conservation

Download or read book Biodiversity and Conservation written by Jeyabalan Sangeetha and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-04-30 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides an enlightening and pragmatic approach to preserving biological diversity by gathering a wide range of peer-reviewed scientific content from biodiversity researchers and conservators from around the world. It brings comprehensive knowledge and information on the present status of conservation of biological diversity including floral, faunal, and microbial diversity. A detailed account of recent trends in conservation and applications under changing climate conditions, focusing mainly on agriculturally and industrially important microbes and their sustainable utilization, is presented as well. Over the past five decades, extensive research work has been done on many aspects of biodiversity conservation and sustainable utilization of biological resources. This book examines this crucial issue. Chapters discuss biodiversity concepts, benefits, and values for economic and sustainable development; explores applications and strategies for biodiversity preservation; and considers the role of biodiversity conservation in public awareness services and cultural significance. The volume also examines the process of evolution and the future of biodiversity in conjunction with climate change factors, with special reference to infectious diseases.

Book Plant Biodiversity at Ajmiriganj Haor Homesteads of Bangladesh

Download or read book Plant Biodiversity at Ajmiriganj Haor Homesteads of Bangladesh written by Md. Maksudul Haque and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2015-06-01 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biodiversity is the contraction of biological diversity. Plant-biodiversity is the most important component of total biodiversity. ''Biodiversity" is the variability among living organisms from all sources including, inter alia, terrestrial, marine and other aquatic ecosystems and the ecological complexes of which they are part. It includes diversity within species, between species and of ecosystem. Plant-biodiversity is the plant genetic wealth of a country. Economically and genetically important materials selected by both human and nature, adapted in the environment are the components of homesteads. Homesteads are the in situ conservation sites of wide range of plant-biodiversity. Environmental variations offer unique opportunity to select appropriate genotypes at different regions. Diversity of genes within plant species increases its ability to adapt in adverse environment. Any decrease in genetic variability may lead to ecosystem instability. Plant biodiversity is instrumental to cycling and recycling of nutrients and thereby achieving the stability of the ecosystem.
