Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With sixty descriptive maps and accompanying text, The Biodiversity Atlas of British Columbia provides a broad overview of the province?s range of terrestrial and freshwater biological diversity. Bringing together data from numerous sources summarized in map form, the Atlas provides a window to B.C.?s diverse ecosystems, the species that live in them, and the elements of British Columbia?s biodiversity that make it globally significant. The Atlas also presents a visual perspective of a number of human-induced threats, including climate change, affecting biodiversity in B.C. today. The Atlas is designed to serve as a companion document to Taking Nature?s Pulse: The Status of Biodiversity in British Columbia ? a comprehensive scientific assessment of biodiversity in the province. Both the Atlas and Taking Nature?s Pulse are projects of Biodiversity BC, a partnership of conservation groups and government agencies.

Book excerpt: Provides a progress report on initiatives in British Columbia related to the five goals of the Canadian Biodiversity Strategy: conservation and sustainable use, ecological management capability, education and awareness, incentives and legislation, and international co-operation. It includes background information on the province and its people as well as an outline of biodiversity issues being addressed by the initiatives. A separate section reviews cornerstone initiatives that form the foundations of the provincial sustainability strategy, such as the Protected Areas Strategy, treaty negotiations, the Timber Supply Review, and the Forest Practices Code.

Book Guidelines for Maintaining Biodiversity During Juvenile Spacing

Download or read book Guidelines for Maintaining Biodiversity During Juvenile Spacing written by Andy Park and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The forests of British Columbia are home to a variety of plant and animal life that is unequalled elsewhere in Canada. To conserve the full variety of these plants and animals, their habitats in the forest must be considered during silvicultural operations such as juvenile spacing. These guidelines describe the mandate for biological diversity, levels of forestry management, designing and executing spacing contracts to maintain stand level biodiversity, and example contract clauses.

Book Forestry and Biodiversity

Download or read book Forestry and Biodiversity written by Fred L. Bunnell and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As global demand for forest products increases, conserving biodiversity has become more urgent and challenging. Forestry and Biodiversity advocates adaptive management a structured approach to learning by doing to sustain biodiversity in managed forests. It draws on the theory and principles of conservation biology and forest ecology and illustrates them, and the challenges they pose, through a practical, real-world study of commercial forestry in a coastal temperate rainforest. This book will be of interest to those who plan, or hope to influence, forest practices and the future of the environment.

Book British Columbia s Inland Rainforest

Download or read book British Columbia s Inland Rainforest written by Susan Stevenson and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-07 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vast temperate rainforests of coastal British Columbia are world renowned, but much less is known about the other rainforest located 500 kilometres inland along the western slopes of the interior mountains. The unique integration of continentality and humidity in this region favours the development of lush rainforest communities that incorporate both coastal and boreal elements. In British Columbia's Inland Rainforest, scientists bring together, for the first time, a broad spectrum of information about this distinctive ecosystem. They also consider the ecological consequences of human activities in the rainforest and present strategies for its management and conservation.

Book Biodiversity of the Prince Rupert Forest Region

Download or read book Biodiversity of the Prince Rupert Forest Region written by Gillian Radcliffe and published by Ministry of Forests Research Program. This book was released on 1994 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Prince Rupert Forest Region occupies somewhat more than one-quarter of the land area of British Columbia and encompasses a broad spectrum of physiographic and climatic units. This project identified the major known components of terrestrial biological diversity and the major information gaps, emphasizing the ecosystem and species diversity in forested areas. To produce an ecosystem synopsis, the wildlife habitat classification was correlated with the biogeoclimatic ecosystem classification to facilitate future cross-referencing. Vascular plant diversity was not specifically examined other than for rare and endangered species. Vertebrates were documented within forested subzones and variants to identify species diversity, determine habitat affinities of species of interest, and develop possible management guilds and management indicator species for forestry management. The taxonomy, abundance, and distribution of both fungi and invertebrates in the region were also investigated. Marine and freshwater species were excluded.
