Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Languages are like organisms, they do not appear by spontaneous creation, they evolve, and so it is with the particular terminology of biochemistry which, as I document here, largely derives from Latin and Ancient Greek root words. In the early part of the 19th century, when chemistry had shaken off the shackles of alchemy, new elements, new compounds, new techniques were discovered that needed names. It was the classical languages, Greek and Latin, to which these early scientists turned. As chemical approaches were applied to biology, much molecular terminology has also derived from these languages. In this book the common technical terms encountered in biochemistry and related subjects are defined and their derivation from root words in Latin and Ancient Greek explained.

Book Oxford Dictionary of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

Download or read book Oxford Dictionary of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology written by Richard Cammack and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2006-06-29 with total page 744 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Dictionary of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology provides a comprehensive survey of current biochemistry and molecular biology. Over the last few years, the language of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology has expanded enormously to the extent that few scientists can expect to be familiar with all aspects of it. This is partly due to the Genome projects and the successive -omics projects which have provided comprehensive information about genes, the functions of gene products, and cellular processes. At the same time, terms from other subject areas appear increasingly in the biochemical literature. The popular Dictionary has been comprehensively reviewed and updated to include many important new concepts and words. The entries are short but informative, providing up-to-date information on a broad range of topics, including definitions for selected terms from Bioinformatics, Biophysics, Cell Biology, Chemistry, Genetics, Immunology, Mathematics, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Systems Biology, and Toxicology. There are over 21,000 main entries, which give details of biochemical substances and the processes in which they are involved, define methods and concepts in molecular biology, and give definitions of biochemical symbols and abbreviations. It points out pitfalls where terms are often confused. It explains the precise syntax of biochemical terms, such as Greek letters and other formatting, which are lost when searching the Internet. In addition the dictionary is illustrated with over 900 chemical structures. The Oxford Dictionary of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology will serve as an invaluable reference for biochemists and molecular biologists seeking information outside their own fields, and for those wishing to revisit fundamental principles.

This glossary is for any student studying bioscience, biomedical or life sciences. The book is for high (secondary) school students and above, as well as those pursuing advanced degrees such as Master’s (MPhil, MSc, MRes, etc.) and Doctoral (DPhil). If you study any of the biosciences, then this glossary is for you. When I was a student, one of my go-to books was a glossary of terms, which is no longer in print. I used the glossary when I was learning new material to look up things I didn’t understand and to remind myself of things I had previously learned. I found it an invaluable learning tool. As I couldn’t find a suitable glossary for today’s students, I wrote one.

Book Biochemical Thermodynamics

Download or read book Biochemical Thermodynamics written by Robert A. Alberty and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2006-03-31 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Navigate the complexities of biochemical thermodynamics with Mathematica(r) Chemical reactions are studied under the constraints of constant temperature and constant pressure; biochemical reactions are studied under the additional constraints of pH and, perhaps, pMg or free concentrations of other metal ions. As more intensive variables are specified, more thermodynamic properties of a system are defined, and the equations that represent thermodynamic properties as a function of independent variables become more complicated. This sequel to Robert Alberty's popular Thermodynamics of Biochemical Reactions describes how researchers will find Mathematica(r) a simple and elegant tool, which makes it possible to perform complex calculations that would previously have been impractical. Biochemical Thermodynamics: Applications of Mathematica(r) provides a comprehensive and rigorous treatment of biochemical thermodynamics using Mathematica(r) to practically resolve thermodynamic issues. Topics covered include: * Thermodynamics of the dissociation of weak acids * Apparent equilibrium constants * Biochemical reactions at specified temperatures and various pHs * Uses of matrices in biochemical thermodynamics * Oxidoreductase, transferase, hydrolase, and lyase reactions * Reactions at 298.15K * Thermodynamics of the binding of ligands by proteins * Calorimetry of biochemical reactions Because Mathematica(r) allows the intermingling of text and calculations, this book has been written in Mathematica(r) and includes a CD-ROM containing the entire book along with macros that help scientists and engineers solve their particular problems.

Book Glossary of Biotechnology Terms

Download or read book Glossary of Biotechnology Terms written by Kimball Nill and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2010-12-12 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a result of biotechnology becoming such a highly prolific area, non-technical people, such as lobbyists, attorneys, marketing, and public relations people, have had to quickly become conversant about a topic that is highly technical. In addition, various specialists working in the field of biotechnology, including chemists, geneticists, and biologists, occasionally have difficulty in understanding the terms utilized by each other in their respective specialties. It is, therefore, necessary to have a book to which you can refer so everyone can clearly discuss the topics in biotechnology. This text provides concise definitions of terms for persons unfamiliar with biotechnology, and clarifies new terms and how they are being used for those who are already somewhat conversant in the area. The Glossary of Biotechnology Terms is a handy reference for people with little or no training in the biological and chemical sciences because it has been written in non-technical language and serves to bring you up to date on biotechnology terminology to provide for more effective communication. The definitions are written utilizing words that enable you to conceptualize the idea embodied in the term and explanations are based on analogy whenever possible. Written to assist those individuals who seek to gain an understanding of the terminology as it is currently used, the Glossary of Biotechnology Terms, Third Edition is compulsory for anyone involved in the biotechnology field or anyone who deals with professionals in biotechnology.
