Book Bio Economic Evaluation of Agroforestry and Monoculture Systems

Download or read book Bio Economic Evaluation of Agroforestry and Monoculture Systems written by Abdu-Moa'amen Shoga'a Aldeen and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-04 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many countries are encountering serious problems of scarcity of natural resources as well as soil erosion and degradation. Agroforestry is being promoted as a more appropriate land use system than monocropping practices for smallholders worldwide. Unfortunately, detailed studies on the sustainability of different land use systems are limited. As land has started to deteriorate, many farmers are turning to traditional agricultural systems. The researcher studied three traditional agroforestry practices in Yemen and their role in maintaining soil fertility and productivity in the short and long term as compared with monoculture. SCUAF software was used to determine the impact of different farming systems on soil properties, and the outputs of the simulation were used to determine the productivity of each system. This book is divided into 8 chapters which present fascinating information on the importance of agroforestry in soil conservation, as well as the profitability of farms. It is an invaluable book for researchers, policy makers, and all those interested in the sustainable management of farms, the achievement of food security, and the alleviation of poverty.

Book Valuing Agroforestry Systems

Download or read book Valuing Agroforestry Systems written by Janaki R.R. Alavalapati and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-03-30 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary objective of this book is to offer practical means for strengthening the economics and policy dimension of the agroforestry discipline. This book, written by the leading experts in economics and agroforestry, encompasses case studies from Australia, China, Kenya, India, Indonesia, Malawi, Mexico, Micronesia, Tanzania, United Kingdom, United States, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The applied economic methodologies encompass a wide variety of case studies including enterprise/farm budget models through Faustmann models, Policy Analysis Matrix, production function approach, risk assessment models, dynamic programming, linear programming, meta-modeling, contingent valuation, attribute-based choice experiments, econometric modeling, and institutional economic analysis. It is our belief that these methodologies help agroforestry students and professionals conduct rigorous assessment of economic and policy aspects of agroforestry systems and to produce less biased and more credible information. Furthermore, the economic and policy issues explored in the book – profitability, environmental benefits, risk reduction, household constraints, rural development, and institutional arrangements – are central to further agroforestry adoption in both tropical and temperate regions. All of the chapters in this volume were subject to rigorous peer review by at least one other contributing author and one external reviewer. We would like to acknowledge the indispensable collaboration of those who provided careful external reviews: Ken Andrasko, Chris Andrew, Peter Boxall, Norman Breuer, Bill Hyde, Tom Holmes, Sherry Larkin, Jagannadharao Matta, Venkatrao Nagubadi, Roz Naylor, Thomas Randolph, Gerald Shively, Changyou Sun, Bo Jellesmark Thorsen, and Yaoqi Zhang. All reviews were coordinated by the book editors.

Book Economics and Ecology of Diversification

Download or read book Economics and Ecology of Diversification written by François Ruf and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-09-23 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The monoculture systems that have been encouraged by governments since the 1960s have led to major socio-economic and environmental crises. Now the diversification of tree crop systems is advancing throughout the tropics. Why and when does diversification take place? What categories of farmers diversify? What obstacles do they have to overcome, and how do public and private policies interfere in this process? How do land use systems and landscapes evolve as a result of this diversification? According to the authors of this volume, diversification is certainly a response to market risks, but also to the depletion of environmental resources. Ecological changes such as declining soil fertility and increasing pressure from pests, diseases and weeds intensify at the end of monoculture cycles, driving crop change and diversification of farming systems. Through 15 case studies from Africa, Latin America, Asia and the Pacific, the authors provide us with in-depth insights into the economy and ecology of family agriculture and its recent developments.

Book Agroecological Economics

Download or read book Agroecological Economics written by Paul Wojtkowski and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2010-07-28 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agroecology is the science of applying ecological concepts and principles to the design, development, and management of sustainable agricultural systems. Agroecological economics, a subsection of agricultural economics, evaluates the ecological consequences of agricultural methods on the economic scale. Agroecological economics considers green engineering as a means of measurement. As the environmental movement unfolds, the importance of biodiversity and long-term sustainability are indisputable. Progress depends on determining the economic viability of terrestrial agroecosystems. What is lacking is the analysis needed to bring biodiverse and sustainable systems to fruition. Agroecological Economics analyzes the current topics that must be addressed in order to provide sustainable agricultural systems. It explains the economics of land-use ecology with emphasis on changing over from a conventional model of agriculture to environmentally- and ecologically-friendly models and the financial incentives that are important to these practices. Analyzes agricultural solutions with economic testing Includes a complete analysis of recent biodiversity-based research with valuable new economic methodologies Provides various applications to mitigate the problems which have economic and ecological effects on agroecosystems Offers applications of ecologically-sound land-use practices in production and manufacturing

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Caused in part by the slash-and-burn practices of both large- and small-scale farmers, the environmental implications of tropical deforestation remain a worldwide concern. Yet the small-scale farmers who use slash-and-burn agriculture depend on it to produce food and make a living for their families. With contributions from scientists, economists, ecologists, and anthropologists, this book provides an overall analysis of the environmental, economic, and social reasons for why slash and burn is so common and presents alternatives to this destructive practice.
