Book Contemporary Art and Feminism

Download or read book Contemporary Art and Feminism written by Jacqueline Millner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-07-05 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important new book examines contemporary art while foregrounding the key role feminism has played in enabling current modes of artmaking, spectatorship and theoretical discourse. Contemporary Art and Feminism carefully outlines the links between feminist theory and practice of the past four decades of contemporary art and offers a radical re-reading of the contemporary movement. Rather than focus on filling in the gaps of accepted histories by ‘adding’ the ‘missing’ female, queer, First Nations and women artists of colour, the authors seek to revise broader understandings of contemporary practice by providing case studies contextualised in a robust art historical and theoretical basis. Readers are encouraged to see where art ideas come from and evaluate past and present art strategies. What strategies, materials or tropes are less relevant in today’s networked, event-driven art economies? What strategies and themes should we keep hold of, or develop in new ways? This is a significant and innovative intervention that is ideal for students in courses on contemporary art within fine arts, visual studies, history of art, gender studies and queer studies.

Ever wondered where they end up after you donate them for recycling? Following a pair of jeans, Clothing Poverty takes the reader on a vivid around-the-world tour to reveal how clothes are manufactured and retailed, bringing to light how fast fashion and clothing recycling are interconnected. Andrew Brooks shows how recycled clothes are traded across continents, uncovers how retailers and international charities are embroiled in commodity chains which perpetuate poverty, and exposes the hidden trade networks which transect the globe. Stitching together rich narratives, from Mozambican markets, Nigerian smugglers and Chinese factories to London’s vintage clothing scene, TOMS shoes and Vivienne Westwood’s ethical fashion lines, Brooks uncovers the many hidden sides of fashion.

Book How Local Art Made Australia s National Capital

Download or read book How Local Art Made Australia s National Capital written by Anni Doyle Wawrzyńczak and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2020-08-31 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canberra’s dual status as national capital and local city dramatically affected the rise of a unique contemporary arts scene. This complex story, informed by rich archival material and interviews, details the triumph of local arts practice and community over the insistent cultural nation-building of Australia’s capital. It exposes local arts as a vital force in Canberra’s development and uncovers the influence of women in the growth of its visual arts culture. A broad illumination of the city-wide development of arts and culture from the 1920s to 2001 is combined with the story of Bitumen River Gallery and its successor Canberra Contemporary Art Space from 1978 to 2001. This history traces the growth of the arts from a community-led endeavour, through a period of responses to social and cultural needs, and ultimately to a humanising local practice that transcended national and international boundaries.

Download or read book Restaging the Past written by Angela Bartie and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2020-08-17 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Restaging the Past is the first edited collection devoted to the study of historical pageants in Britain, ranging from their Edwardian origins to the present day. Across Britain in the twentieth century, people succumbed to ‘pageant fever’. Thousands dressed up in historical costumes and performed scenes from the history of the places where they lived, and hundreds of thousands more watched them. These pageants were one of the most significant aspects of popular engagement with the past between the 1900s and the 1970s: they took place in large cities, small towns and tiny villages, and engaged a whole range of different organised groups, including Women’s Institutes, political parties, schools, churches and youth organisations. Pageants were community events, bringing large numbers of people together in a shared celebration and performance of the past; they also involved many prominent novelists, professional historians and other writers, as well as featuring repeatedly in popular and highbrow literature. Although the pageant tradition has largely died out, it deserves to be acknowledged as a key aspect of community history during a period of great social and political change. Indeed, as this book shows, some traces of ‘pageant fever’ remain in evidence today.

Book The Baha Mousa Public Inquiry report

Download or read book The Baha Mousa Public Inquiry report written by Baha Mousa Public Inquiry and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2011-09-08 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The terms of reference for this inquiry were to investigate and report on the circumstances surrounding the death of Baha Mousa and the treatment of those detained with him. It takes account of previous investigations that have already taken place, in particular where responsibility lay for approving the practice of conditioning detainees by any members of the 1st Battalion, The Queen's Lancashire Regiment in Iraq in 2003.The report is divided into four modules: the history of the use of conditioning techniques (from the time of internment in Northern Ireland in the early 1970s up to and including March 2003; Baha Mousa and other detainees; training and the chain of command; the future - what has happened since 2003 is considered in relation to conditioning techniques.Baha Mousa died with 93 injuries in custody in Basra in 2003. His relatives claim he was beaten to death by troops. The inquiry concluded that his death was caused by a combination of his weakened physical state and a final struggle with his guards. The Inquiry has criticised the conduct of individual soldiers, senior army officers and their legal advisers and also failures in the chain of command. The lack of training and preparation British troops received for the invasion of Iraq is also highlighted. The report found that systematic abuse of civilians by British troops did not happen. There are 64 recommendations to the Ministry of Defence including that the MoD should keep its current absolute prohibition on the use of hoods on captured personnel. Arguments for the ban are overwhelming and a return to their use is difficult to justify

Book excerpt: In the stillness of the courtroom a bookseller stands accused of selling a book. Is it a work of sensitive genius or an execrable volume of pornography? Could it have driven a respectable college boy to commit brutal rape? And who is the author of the novel at the vortex of a storm of sensation and controversy? Michael Barret has been asked by a friend to join him in a small law partnership, but has also been offered a huge salary to go into big business. He's certain of his choice, till he is given a chance to be involved with a major case involved with protecting free speech. The case is about the explicit book "The Seven Minutes", which some people consider pornography, while others, Barret included, feel is impressive literature. The main focus of the prosecution's case is a teenager who bought the book, and was soon after arrested for rape. According to the prosecution, the book insinuated the boy to do what he did, so it must be banned. The novel follows the course of the trial, as both Barret and the prosecutor search for reputable witnesses to prove their side.
