Binge drinking often begins in adolescence and continues into young adulthood. Recent estimates indicate that 1 in 5 adolescents and 1 in 2 college students binge drink. Binge drinking has resulted in numerous alcohol-related tragedies, including acute alcohol poisonings, falls, and automobile collisions, and is often associated with other high-risk behaviours. This comprehensive resource contains all of the newest information that is now known about binge drinking and how this type of alcohol consumption (drinking to get drunk) differs from social drinking and chronic drinking and alcoholism. All of the recent research on this topic are included, such as the results from recent animal studies that indicate that binge drinking may be more damaging to an adolescent brain compared to an adult brain and how changes in trends in alcohol consumption (such as mixing energy drinks with alcohol) maybe be exacerbating this behaviour. finally, recent successful intervention techniques both on the individual level (eg: motivational interviewing in the emergency room) to the institutional level (e.g., programs to reduce binge drinking on college campuses) are described. Book excerpt: Binge drinking (BD) is a highly prevalent pattern in most Western countries characterized by the intake of large amounts of alcohol in a short time followed by periods of abstinence. This abusive form of alcohol consumption is a regular practice in around a third of European and American youths. The high prevalence of BD at this age is of particular concern since adolescence and youth are in a period of special vulnerability to neurotoxic effects of alcohol, mainly due to the structural and functional changes going on in the brain throughout this key developmental stage. Evidence gathered during the last decade from animal and human studies seems to point to multiple brain anomalies associated with BD. In this Research Topic, we have collated a compendium of articles that address multiple aspects of BD during adolescence and young adulthood such as identification, prevalence, gender differences and neurocognitive anomalies associated with this excessive alcohol consumption pattern. These articles collectively highlight the breadth of current research conducted in this field but also the need to join efforts to improve the screening of the BD pattern, the characterization of its consequences as well as the translation of knowledge acquired in the laboratory into clinical practice. Moreover, a pattern of heavy drinking established in adolescence and young adulthood may continue into an adult pattern of alcohol abuse. Concerned communities and institutions across the nation are tackling the problem of alcohol use and abuse by young people. Research-based knowledge is urgently needed to inform these efforts and to ensure that limited prevention resources are used as effectively as possible. The origins of youthful alcohol use and abuse are found within the complex interplay of individual characteristics, family and peer influences, the larger societal context for alcohol use, environmental conditions, and maturational processes that accompany adolescence. This volume, which began as a special issue of the Journal of Research on Adolescence, contains all of the material from the journal issue plus additional chapters.
