Book Bilingual Two language Assessment Battery of Tests

Download or read book Bilingual Two language Assessment Battery of Tests written by Adolph Caso and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Battery of Tests has been created to be administered to public and private school Limited English Proficiency (LEP) students, to adults, and to potential employees. The series can also be used to determine language proficiency in languages other than English making the battery of tests useful for companies seeking to employ multi-lingual talent. The Battery of Tests appears to be quite useful to institutions who need accurate assessments of multi-language speakers. It certainly can provide a bench-mark for evaluating students as well as employees in-house in quite a number of languages. Being an assessment test, it is rather dry and unappealing necessitating users to make clear to test-takers the importance of results. The Battery of Tests is a useful tool for those who require an off-the-shelf standardised language competency tool.

Book Developing Narrative Comprehension

Download or read book Developing Narrative Comprehension written by Ute Bohnacker and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2020-12-15 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprehension of texts and understanding of questions is a cornerstone of successful human communication. Whilst reading comprehension has been thoroughly investigated in the last decade, there is surprisingly little research on children’s comprehension of picture stories, particularly for bilinguals. This can be partially explained by the lack of cross-culturally robust, cross-linguistic instruments targeting early narration. This book presents an inference-based model of narrative comprehension and a tool that grew out of a large-scale European project on multilingualism. Covering a range of language settings, the book uses the Multilingual Assessment Instrument for Narratives to answer the question which narrative comprehension skills (bilingual) children can be expected to master at a certain age, and explores how such comprehension is affected (or not affected) by linguistic and extra-linguistic factors. Linking theory to method, the book will appeal to researchers in linguistics and psychology and graduate students interested in narrative, multilingualism, and language acquisition.

Book Growing Old with Two Languages

Download or read book Growing Old with Two Languages written by Ellen Bialystok and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2017-08-07 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection brings together two areas of research that are currently receiving great attention in both scientific and public spheres: cognitive aging and bilingualism. With ongoing media focus on the aging population and the need for activities to forestall cognitive decline, experiences that appear effective in maintaining functioning are of great interest. One such experience is lifelong bilingualism. Moreover, research into the cognitive effects of bilingualism has increased dramatically in the past decade, making it an exciting area of study. This volume combines these issues and presents the most recent research and thinking into the effects of bilingualism on cognitive decline in aging. The contributors are all leading scholars in their field. The result is a state-of-the art collection on the effect of bilingualism on cognition in older populations for both healthy aging and aging with dementia. The papers will be of interest to researchers, students, and health professionals.

This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: COST Action IS0804 “Language Impairment in a Multilingual Society: Linguistic Patterns and the Road to Assessment” aimed to profile bilingual specific language impairment (biSLI) by establishing a network for research on the linguistic and cognitive abilities of bilingual children with SLI across different migrant communities. A battery of tools for Language Impairment Testing in Multilingual Settings (LITMUS) was designed within the Action to achieve these aims, including the Parental Bilingual Questionnaire, the Sentence Repetition Task, the Crosslinguistic Lexical Tasks, the Multilingual Assessment Instrument for Narratives, and two nonword repetition tasks that are not language-specific. The chapters in this volume present research on one or more of the LITMUS tasks in bilingual children with typical language development and on use of the LITMUS testing battery for identifying possible language impairment. The work presented here will be of interest for researchers and clinicians alike, and have profound impact in our understanding of bilingual language development and impairment.

Book Language Assessment

Download or read book Language Assessment written by H. Douglas Brown and published by Pearson Education ESL. This book was released on 2018-03-16 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Language Assessment: Principles and Classroom Practices is designed to offer a comprehensive survey of essential principles and tools for second language assessment. Its first and second editions have been successfully used in teacher-training courses, teacher certification curricula, and TESOL master of arts programs. As the third in a trilogy of teacher education textbooks, it is designed to follow H. Douglas Brown's other two books, Principles of Language Learning and Teaching (sixth edition, Pearson Education, 2014) and Teaching by Principles(fourth edition, Pearson Education, 2015). References to those two books are made throughout the current book. Language Assessment features uncomplicated prose and a systematic, spiraling organization. Concepts are introduced with practical examples, understandable explanations, and succinct references to supportive research. The research literature on language assessment can be quite complex and assume that readers have technical knowledge and experience in testing. By the end of Language Assessment, however, readers will have gained access to this not-so-frightening field. They will have a working knowledge of a number of useful, fundamental principles of assessment and will have applied those principles to practical classroom contexts. They will also have acquired a storehouse of useful tools for evaluating and designing practical, effective assessment techniques for their classrooms.

Book excerpt: Sold in a package of 20, these ITALK forms are part of the Bilingual English-Spanish Assessment (BESA), a language assessment for use with children ages 4 through 6 years who have varying degrees of bilingualism. Completed by the examiner as a parent and teacher interview, the 10-minute ITALK addresses relative use of a child's two languages and five areas of speech and language development (vocabulary, grammar, sentence production, comprehension, and phonology) in both Spanish and English. Parents and teachers identify the child's perceived level of performance in each language, and the ITALK provides a helpful summary of parent and teacher concerns that can be used to guide target areas of assessment. Results of the ITALK can be used to interpret diagnostic results from BESA or other speech and language tests. ABOUT BESA A valid and reliable assessment that specifically responds to the needs of young Spanish-English bilingual children, BESA was developed to: identify phonological and/or language impairment in bilingual children and English language learners using a standardized protocol differentiate between a delay in English language acquisition and a true language disorder document children's speech and language strengths and needs monitor children's progress in both languages and use the information to make decisions about intervention Through a combination of subtests for students and surveys for teachers and parents, BESA reveals the big picture of a young bilingual child's language development.
