The German text contains about 3,500 words including plurals, possessives, and conjugations, but the sentences are generally constructed from shorter phrases, which helps to keep them comprehensible for the student. The English text in this book was translated from the German so that, unlike the King James English translation, it closely matches the structure and vocabulary used in the German text. The German and English texts are laid out in separate but aligned columns. This parallel format enables the student to practice reading German without becoming distracted by the English, while also making it easy to find the English translation for an unknown word in context. Additionally, every word or phrase in the German text is linked to its corresponding English translation - see the lower right corner of the cover (or inside) for an example. And both texts are fully indexed so that other uses of a word can be found. All together, these features make this book accessible to part-time German language students as early as the second semester of study (U.S. 8th grade), and useful as a language enrichment or independent study resource, particularly for motivated Bible students or missionaries with no prior experience with the German language.

In Luther's translation of the apocrypha utilizing the Latin Vulgate and the Septuagint, however it is acknowledge today on those particular texts he was working from unreliable editions. Therefore, the Apocrypha was partially retranslated for this edition modeled after the language and readability of Luther's. Apart from the Psalms, which features a single column, the biblical text is printed in a double column. Features include, outlines at the beginning of each book, cross-references as footnotes to the text, and maps along the inside of the front and back cover, and a subject index.

Book excerpt: The publication of the first edition of A Bilingual Dictionary of the Hebrew and Aramaic Old Testament by Ludwig Koehler and Walter Baumgartner in 1953 marked a major event in Old Testament studies. It presented a vast treasure of lexicographical material, with renderings into both German and English. Its publication superseded at once all other existing dictionaries, mostly stemming from the 19th century. The Dictionary offered for the first time a strictly alphabetical order of entries, rather than a simple arrangement by roots. This feature not only saved the scholar much time and work, it also set the standard for future lexicographical work on the Old Testament. In 1958 a new, expanded edition was published which included an extensive supplement. Many reprints have followed since, all following the original presentation of a dictionary and supplement in two separate volumes. To this very day the Dictionary remains the only complete and comprehensive English-German dictionary of the Old Testament.
