A certain aesthetic turning point was brought about by the silent ‘algorithmic revolution’ we have not hardly noticed, as the curators of the Centre of Art and Media (ZKM) in Karlsruhe, Germany, propose with their current exhibition. At present, barely any part of social life is not influenced by these decision-making processes (algorithms) habitually executed by our computer devices. The radical changes this revolution causes for all of us are incalculable. However, we should not forget that algorithms, a well-defined set of technical instructions with a finite number of rules designed to solve a specific problem, have been incorporated as a creative instrument in the work of Albrecht D ̈urer and other artists since the late middle ages. The strict application of algorithms in art ultimately led to works explicitly integrating the recipient into the creative process, eventually culminating in the new media arts. Today’s art practices transform observers into users. Emerging with the changing paradigm is a new type of creator of cultural artefacts. This has been accompanied now for more than two decades by a fruitful collaborative atmosphere between the formerly strictly separated traditions of art and science. More often than not artists like such as the pioneers Christa Sommerer, Laurent Mignonneau, and Jeffrey Shaw are at the same time scientific researchers found in institutional laboratories as heads of larger teams which include programmers, engineers and scientists of various different disciplines. They develop new hard- and software technologies themselves. All in all this development places not only an inestimable number of creative tools in the hands of the artist, but a highly dynamic and hybrid field that forms new areas like telepresence art, biocybernetic art, robotics, Net art, space art, experiments in nanotechnology, artificial or A-life art, creating virtual agents and avatars, datamining, mixed realities and database- supported art, which all explore the technologies of tomorrow. Not long ago, artists sought to explore software coding as the foundation of their expression and as a ‘material’ with specific properties. Book excerpt: This book is an investigation of the cultural phenomenon of branding and its transformational effects on the contemporary spatial – and urban – reality. It develops a novel understanding of the rationale behind the construction of large-scale architectural complexes that relate to corporate brands, and of its tremendous cultural effects. The author suggests that what we see today is the creation of "global mass ornaments", of a thorough ornamentalization of the entire globe. The origins of this are discussed with regard to examples of corporate brand-building from Europe and China (Autostadt Wolfsburg, BMW Welt Munich and Anting New Town). Additional cases are several simulated spaces in Berlin and the space-branding activities of companies like Apple or Prada. Theoretically, the author develops an innovative poststructuralist framework, combining ideas from Gilles Deleuze with the space philosophy of Peter Sloterdijk. He analyzes how the corporate redefinition of space makes the city enter into a mode of virtual urbanity. This idea leads to a notion of a "global urban" and, ultimately, the "global mass ornament". This concept of a global mass ornament is developed here with reference to Sloterdijk’s concept of a world of "spheres". The latter is used to understand the new mode of spatiality of mediatized spaces. The book makes the point that our world is involved in a process of mass ornamentalization that has only just begun. The concept of the global mass ornament is the first to come to grips with a culture in which branding is effectively changing the physiognomy of the earth. The global mass ornament is a banner for a cultural transformation that employs architecture, sign theory and mechanisms borrowed from traditional advertising and from social media, as well as social processes – and that we have yet to properly understand. This book is a significant step forward in this respect.

The missing link between these two is the sleeper agent – the foreign enemy hiding among US citizens. By analyzing popular television shows, several US comic books, and a broad variety of Hollywood films that depict sleeper agents direct or allegorically, this book explores how a shift in perspective—from terrorist to sleeper agent—brings new insights into our understanding of post-9/11 representations of terrorism.
