Book excerpt: A stirring tale of life, loss, redemption and salvation set against the backdrop of a May/December relationship. In the backwoods and swamps of Louisiana, 100 year old Granny Stillwater hides away, waiting out her last years. However her plans are derailed by the entrance of Wade "Bigz" Covey, a New Orleans Drug Lord who has amnesia from being shot in the head by his partner in crime, Fast Eddy. In the middle of a hurricane, the severely wounded Bigz bursts into Ella Mae's cabin and is nursed back to health by the old lady. Together, they find they are kindred souls and through each other, both find the strength to go on with their lives. The very forces that brought them together would just as easily tear them apart, on one hand there is Ella Mae's distant relative, Sheriff Jack Johnson who wants to protect her from the harm he fears her association with Wade "Bigz" Covey will surely bring. On the other hand there is Fast Eddy, the murderous thug who is only safe if "Bigz" is dead.

Book excerpt: I was once nicknamed by the Daily Lobo, when I ran for the Vice Presidency of the UNM student body on the same ticket as the famous local Homecoming Queen and lesbian, Presidential candidate P.M. "Tuffy Duffy" Ingrassia, as Jeremiah "The Freak" Foley. One of the saving graces of having been a bum hippy, is that although you could get food stamps, free costumes from salvation army and money from student grants and hence, "go to school" for a decade without having to have a full time job or aim, was that you could afford neither a camera or film. As such, there is no such documentation that exists of a rumored, wayward, hitch-hiking, environmental activist, nudist, drug experimenting, psychedelic interior VW bus driving, party going lunatic. Sadly, more recent generations are better documented and hence have no deniability, whereas I have no recollection of any such a vehicle nor does any such proof exist. There is however in existence, a fictional screenplay of such a character that bears no relation to any actual living or dead people and any similarities are coincidental.

Book Under a Southern Moon

Download or read book Under a Southern Moon written by Patricia Colella and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2018-08-17 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scooter and his family fled the blazing forest fire to the safe hide-away of a Kudzu-covered fence between the forest and the old plantation house known as Stone Gable. Scooter was a scholarly raccoon but what he couldnt know, while checking out the place that was to become their new home, was that the attic of Stone Gable was exactly his wheelhouse. Purely by dumb-luck he happened upon the biggest discovery of his life, and the implications for Stone Gable were so profound he wondered if he could ever figure out why humans did what they did. Oddly enough, they could almost reach-out and touch their land, their old home, their beloved tree, but even if they stretched and strained they would never touch it again. Change happened, and they were trying to adjust. But after all that, after all those months in which Stone Gable had happily become their home, there was that bleakest of days, the worst day of Scooters life. His wife and three children were hiding as he taught them to do when danger loomed. Danger was looming now, and it came in the form of Matthew, the exterminator. Scooter bloodied his paws and fingers scratching at doors and windows, used his body as a battering-ram trying to gain access, but to no avail. His only optionface the enemy! Face Miss Anne head on and plead for her mercy. As he ran toward her he was sure she would try to beat him to death with the nearest thing she could grab, and with his wild demeanor and bloodied body he could understand that. How did my life come to this, he wondered? Ages: 9, 10, 11, 12

Book excerpt: The New York Times bestseller One of America’s most original and biting comic satirists, Denis Leary takes on all the poseurs, politicians, and pop culture icons who have sucked in public for far too long. Sparing no one, Leary zeroes in on the ridiculous wherever he finds it—his Irish Catholic upbringing, the folly of celebrity, the pressures of family life, and the great hypocrisy of politics—with the same bright, savage, and profane insight he brought to his critically acclaimed one-man shows No Cure for CancerLock ’n Load. Proudly Irish-American, defiantly working class, with a reserve of compassion for the underdog and the overlooked, Leary delivers blistering diatribes that are both penetrating social commentary with no holds barred and laugh-out-loud funny. As always, Leary’s impassioned comic perspective in Why We Suck is right on target. Leary is the star and co-creator of the Emmy-nominated television show Rescue Me.

Book Surfing the black Yugoslav Black Wave cinema and its transgressive moments

Download or read book Surfing the black Yugoslav Black Wave cinema and its transgressive moments written by Gal Kirn and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Yugoslav black wave cinema of the sixties and the seventies is one of the grand, though hidden, chapters of cinema history. Talented young authors, working under the sign of individual expression and aesthetic experimentation, pushed and explored the limits of the constraints of a socialist state. Their efforts lead to a new path of visual expression, so outstanding by its social and political engagement, its formal invention, and its courage. This book is the result of a multi-disciplinary research attempting to cross over politics, philosophy, design, art, architecture, and some speculative thinking. Starting from archival work, interviews, seminars, screenings and a conference, 'Surfing the Black' has found its (temporary) conclusion in a publication consisting of six theoretical essays and three fanzines that open up the black wave film experience to current affairs.

Book Making Home s in Displacement

Download or read book Making Home s in Displacement written by Luce Beeckmans and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2022-01-17 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making Home(s) in Displacement critically rethinks the relationship between home and displacement from a spatial, material, and architectural perspective. Recent scholarship in the social sciences has investigated how migrants and refugees create and reproduce home under new conditions, thereby unpacking the seemingly contradictory positions of making a home and overcoming its loss. Yet, making home(s) in displacement is also a spatial practice, one which intrinsically relates to the fabrication of the built environment worldwide. Conceptually the book is divided along four spatial sites, referred to as camp, shelter, city, and house, which are approached with a multitude of perspectives ranging from urban planning and architecture to anthropology, geography, philosophy, gender studies, and urban history, all with a common focus on space and spatiality. By articulating everyday homemaking experiences of migrants and refugees as spatial practices in a variety of geopolitical and historical contexts, this edited volume adds a novel perspective to the existing interdisciplinary scholarship at the intersection of home and displacement. It equally intends to broaden the canon of architectural histories and theories by including migrants' and refugees' spatial agencies and place-making practices to its annals. By highlighting the political in the spatial, and vice versa, this volume sets out to decentralise and decolonise current definitions of home and displacement, striving for a more pluralistic outlook on the idea of home.

Download or read book Mostly Harmless written by Douglas Adams and published by Del Rey. This book was released on 2009-09-23 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now celebrating the 42nd anniversary of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, soon to be a Hulu original series! “Hitchhiker fans rejoice! . . . [Here’s] more of the same zany nonsensical mayhem.”—The New York Times Book Review It’s easy to get disheartened when your planet has been blown up and the woman you love has vanished due to a misunderstanding about space/time. However, instead of being disheartened, Arthur Dent makes the terrible mistake of starting to enjoy life a bit—and immediately all hell breaks loose. Hell takes a number of forms: there’s the standard Ford Prefect version, in the shape of an all-new edition of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and a totally unexpected manifestation in the form of a teenage girl who startles Arthur Dent by being his daughter when he didn’t even know he had one. Can Arthur save the Earth from total multidimensional obliteration? Can he save the Guide from a hostile alien takeover? Can he save his daughter, Random, from herself? Of course not. He never works out exactly what is going on. Will you? “Douglas Adams is a terrific satirist. . . . He is anything but harmless.”—The Washington Post Book World
