Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hope Hathaway: A Story of Western Ranch Life Hathaway's home-ranch spread itself miles over an open valley on the upper Missouri. As far as the eye reached not a fence could be seen, yet four barbed-wires, stretched upon good cotton-wood posts, separated the ranch from the open country about. Jim Hathaway was an old-time cattleman. He still continued each summer to turn out upon the range great droves of Texas steers driven north by his cowboys, though at this time it was more profitable to ship in Western grown stock. He must have known that this was so, for every year his profits became less, yet it was the nature of the man to keep in the old ruts, to cling to old habits. Book Historic Ranches of Wyoming

Download or read book Historic Ranches of Wyoming written by Judith Hancock de Sandoval and published by University of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1986 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Judith Sandoval brings an eye for striking detail and a feeling for the effects of time and habitation to her photographic tour of 450 ranches in sixteen counties in Wyoming. She discovered a dazzling variety of architectural styles in old ranchhouses, bunkhouses, barns, and even chicken coops. Taking in the whole ranching scene, she photographed corrals, machinery, irrigation works, and structures of stone built by German and Scottish immigrants and of logs by Scandinavians. She interviewed hundreds of people who have made their mark on the land, including many descendants of the builders. Some families have operated the same spread for five generations. Historic Ranches of Wyoming takes in such famous working ranches as the Wyoming Hereford Ranch, Careyhurst, the Palette Ranch, the Pitchfork Ranch, and John Kendrick's LX Bar. Among the dude ranches featured are the Seven-D, Eaton's in the Bar BC, and Valley Dude Ranch. In 1986 the Nicolaysen Art Museum in Casper, Wyoming, is mounting a major touring exhibit of Sandoval's photographs. Historic Ranches of Wyoming contains most of the photographs in the exhibition. The book includes an essay by T. A. Larson on the history of ranching in Wyoming and one by Robert Roripaugh about growing up on a ranch near Lander, Wyoming.

Book What Has Passed and What Remains

Download or read book What Has Passed and What Remains written by Peter Friederici and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2016-12-15 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ferrell Secakuku remembers the ancient farming rites of his Hopi people but saw them replaced by a cash economy. Sheep rancher Joe Manterola recalls watching hard scrabble farms on what is now tree-studded grassland on Garland Prairie. Navajo Rose Gishie once saw freshly dug holes fill with clean, drinkable water where none rises today. All over northern Arizona, people have seen the landscapes change, and livelihoods with them. In this remarkable book they share their stories. Thirteen narratives—from ranchers, foresters, scientists, Native American farmers, and others—tell how northern Arizona landscapes and livelihoods reflect rapid social and environmental change. The twentieth century saw huge changes as Arizona’s human population swelled and vacation-home developments arose in the backcountry. Riparian areas dried up, cattle ranching declined, and some wildlife species vanished while others thrived. The people whose words are preserved here have watched it all happen. The book is a product of Northern Arizona University’s Ecological Oral Histories project, which has been collecting remembrances of long-time area residents who have observed changes to the land from the 1930s to the present day. It carves a wide swath, from the Arizona Strip to the Mogollon Rim, from valleys near Prescott to the New Mexico line. It takes readers to the Bar Heart Ranch north of Williams and to the Doy Reidhead Ranch southeast of Holbrook, to the forests of Flagstaff and the mesas of Indian country. Enhanced with more than fifty illustrations, this book brings environmental change down to earth by allowing us to see it through the eyes of those whose lives it has directly touched. What Has Passed and What Remains is a window on the past that carries important lessons for the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winter on the P Bar J Ranch is the second novel set on the P Bar J Ranch. It's wintertime in Northern Arizona and long time Arizona rancher Jeff Dean is looking back at his first winter on the P Bar J Ranch. The story opens in early December 1952 following Jeff Dean's first summer on the P Bar J Ranch in north-central Arizona. Jeff's 12th birthday has come and gone and along with it a lot of the time for playing. Now he is becoming a real cowboy. Jeff and the Howard's twins, Lenny and Lynda, have had to assume more of the day-to-day work on the big cattle ranch run by Jeff's dad, Roy. This is especially true after the old hired hand, Jay, suffers injuries from a fall on a horse while the boys are helping him move a small bunch of cattle. Shortly afterwards Deputy Parker encounters three members of the Owsley family just north of the P Bar J Ranch. Later Jeff thinks that he might have heard a gunshot just as Jay's horse fell. The Owsleys are back ... seeking stolen bank money and revenge. The approach of Christmas 1952 is a stressful time for Jeff since he is faced for the first time with the task of buying a present for a girl ... Lynda. Then as the New Year 1953 nears, a severe blizzard is headed for northern Arizona. As part of their cowboy chores Jeff and his friends take part in cattle drives, repair fences, pull stuck cows out of muddy water holes, and ride through snow to chop ice on troughs and tanks so cattle can get to water. After returning some stray cattle they stumble upon an abandoned cabin in an isolated part of a neighboring ranch where an unsolved multiple murder had occurred almost 20 years earlier. Jeff's dad and Jay accompany another sheriff deputy to investigate a multiple shooting on another ranch. Roy ends up taking the law into his own hands. Things won't be the same on the P Bar J Ranch after the winter of 1952-'53. Childhood is quickly coming to an end.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Get ready to experience an action filled Summer on the P Bar J Ranch. Long time Arizona rancher Jeff Dean is thinking back to a particular summer over 60 years ago. The time is 1952 and 11-year-old Jeff Dean is spending his first summer on the P Bar J Ranch in north central Arizona near Route 66. Jeff's parents are separated and his dad has recently become the manager of this large cattle ranch. The story takes place from June through August of that year and follows the adventures of Jeff (a big fan of Roy Rogers) and his friends, as well as the adults on the ranch, including the parents and cowboys. The summer begins with Jeff getting settled in, meeting & becoming friends with the ranch owners' 11 year old twins (Lenny & Lynda), getting to know the hired hands, and taking a bike ride with Lenny on their Schwinns to fish and explore. Readers will experience an action filled childhood summer on the P Bar J Ranch and in the process will pick up true bits of history, cowboy etiquette, tips on handling horses, and a feeling for the time and place. There are also shoot outs with bank robbers, and a good dose of early '50s nostalgia, e.g. Roy Rogers, cap guns, B westerns, and Schwinn bicycles.
