Book Fundraising for Schools

Download or read book Fundraising for Schools written by Linda Wise McNay and published by . This book was released on 2014-09-20 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being a head of school is both challenging and rewarding work. Heads of school and those who aspire to the role are expected to engage alumni and parents and raise money effectively; yet, most have received little or no training or support in advancement. In Fundraising for Schools: 8 Keys to Success Every Head of School Should Know, veteran fundraising consultant Linda Wise McNay demystifies fundraising for school leaders. This innovative book will guide school leaders on: How heads of school should manage their time in every stage of their fundraising and stewardship efforts The importance of board leadership The critical relationship between the head of school and, if there is one, the chief development officer Detailed instruction on "how to ask" McNay offers lessons that she routinely shares with her independent school clients. Some schools do not have a chief development officer or experienced advancement staff. She shares detailed explanations of which fundraising tasks are the most important and which should be undertaken first by school leadership. She explains annual giving, major giving, capital campaigns, and the school's endowment. This book is organized into eight chapters: Chapter One: Three Secrets to Successful Fundraising. Schools cannot be supported by tuition alone. Therefore, the head of school needs to devote significant time and attention to fundraising. A school leader must be able to present the case for support and lead the board and staff in a team effort to ask for funds, all while following a coordinated plan of action. Chapter Two: Fundraising Methods by Rate of Return. A school fundraising plan should include scheduled direct mail, telephone, event, sponsorship, email, and personal solicitations. Effectiveness of all solicitations is enhanced with an accurate database and appropriate stewardship. Chapter Three: The Big Ask. The head of school needs to be able to talk about money-a lot. The greatest reason people give money is because they are asked in person! Chapter Four: Forge a Lasting Partnership with the Chief Development Officer. Development is the process of building long-term, positive, and mutually beneficial relationships between donors and the school. This is best achieved by the combined efforts of the head of school and the development staff member(s) and volunteers. It is definitely not a one-person job. Chapter Five: A Primary Responsibility of the Board Is to Raise Money. One hundred percent of board members should participate in fundraising both as donors and in soliciting others to all campaigns at your school. Chapter Six: Operational Funds Have Less Donor Appeal, but They Are Essential. Most schools begin their fundraising efforts with the annual fund. You must create a case for annual operating needs and train your volunteers on the importance of unrestricted giving. Chapter Seven: Capital Campaigns Occur Every Three to Five Years, so Prepare Yourself. Everyone is an annual fund prospect. Some donors are also capital gift prospects. The top 10 donors are critical to your campaign success. Chapter Eight: Endowment Building for the Future. The best way to build an endowment for your school is to initiate a planned giving program.

Book Joan Garry s Guide to Nonprofit Leadership

Download or read book Joan Garry s Guide to Nonprofit Leadership written by Joan Garry and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-03-06 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonprofit leadership is messy Nonprofits leaders are optimistic by nature. They believe with time, energy, smarts, strategy and sheer will, they can change the world. But as staff or board leader, you know nonprofits present unique challenges. Too many cooks, not enough money, an abundance of passion. It’s enough to make you feel overwhelmed and alone. The people you help need you to be successful. But there are so many obstacles: a micromanaging board that doesn’t understand its true role; insufficient fundraising and donors who make unreasonable demands; unclear and inconsistent messaging and marketing; a leader who’s a star in her sector but a difficult boss… And yet, many nonprofits do thrive. Joan Garry’s Guide to Nonprofit Leadership will show you how to do just that. Funny, honest, intensely actionable, and based on her decades of experience, this is the book Joan Garry wishes she had when she led GLAAD out of a financial crisis in 1997. Joan will teach you how to: Build a powerhouse board Create an impressive and sustainable fundraising program Become seen as a ‘workplace of choice’ Be a compelling public face of your nonprofit This book will renew your passion for your mission and organization, and help you make a bigger difference in the world.

Download or read book 50 Ways to Raise 1 000 written by Gwen Green and published by . This book was released on 2020-08-13 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WHY SHOULD YOU READ THIS BOOK?You should read this book because it is worth at least $50,000! As a fundraiser, I'm sure you'll have come across many lists of fundraising ideas online and some you'll have been able to put into action.Where this book takes a different approach is that not only does it provide a great list of fundraising ideas that most people could do, it also explains very clearly what you'll need to do to 'scale' that fundraising idea to raise at least $1,000. This includes ticket pricing, target audience, number of people you need to engage etc.In addition, the 50 fundraising ideas have been split into 10 categories, based on where these ideas are likely to be most successful, e.g. in the workplace, in the community or online. I caveat that several ideas could work across different categories.I have never met a fundraiser who thought they had plenty of time on their hands, especially not our wonderful volunteer fundraisers who are also juggling jobs, family, and other life commitments. As such this book provides inspiration for great fundraising ideas that can bring in a substantial amount of money in one hit.If you are passionate about fundraising for your local community, school, church, sports club, animal shelter or hospice, etc. but feel a bit guilty because you'd also like to spend more time with your family, friends, traveling, enjoying your hobbies, or if like me you'd just like to spend more time sleeping - then this is the book for you!WHY I WROTE THIS BOOKI have been a fundraiser for as long as I can remember, before I even knew what it meant. My earliest fundraising memory is from the age of about 6 when my task was to stuff as many items into a standard-sized matchbox and get people to sponsor me to do so. Great fun for a 6-year-old, and impressive targeting for a very well-known children's charity. From school fundraising activities to fundraising for the local church roof, I was always at the center of something fundraising-related.In my early 20's, I decided to raise funds for a disability charity that had supported my family; the challenge was to raise $2500 and hike100 km across the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt. Waking up one morning in the desert, slightly sunburnt, unwashed for days, and sand in all the wrong places, I decided fundraising was the life for me!For the last twenty years, I have worked as a professional fundraiser and worked my way from a fundraising administrator to a charity CEO. What has always struck me during this time is the power of community and the dedication of individuals, just like you, who take time out of their busy lives to raise funds for causes they believe in.From building sports halls and fixing church roofs to providing shelter and care for the vulnerable, the compassion and dedication of our local communities are the backbones of fundraising worldwide. I wrote this book to say 'thank you' and to provide you not only with some great fundraising ideas, but also practical advice as to what you need to do to scale those ideas to raise $1,000 from each.
