If left untreated in infants it can impair the development of vision, and in adults it may be an indicator of muscle weakness, endocrine disease, cancer or poisoning. This comprehensive text and atlas offers ophthalmologists in practise and in training complete coverage of the causes, diagnosis, evaluation and surgical interventions available to remedy this condition. Presented in ten chapters from anatomy and differential diagnoses to surgical interventions, this book shows the latest surgical techniques firstly through line drawings before moving to clinical photographs of the techniques. The book also covers the surgical management of other associated conditions i.e. telecanthus, epicanthus, and ectropion that may need to be managed in conjunction with Ptosis and contains an invaluable list of drugs reported to induce Ptosis and syndromes and diseases associated with the condition.

Book excerpt: In East Asian countries, the ever-growing popularity of facial cosmetic surgery has generated various debates on the ethical implications of the practice. Ethical discussions are zooming in on the medicalisation of race-identifying facial features, such as Asian eyelids, in what has been referred to as Asian cosmetic surgery. In this study, I first posit that medicalisation in Asian cosmetic surgery can be interpreted in two forms: treatment versus enhancement forms. In the treatment form, cosmetic surgery is viewed as a remedy for "pathologised" Asian features. In the enhancement form, cosmetic surgery is seen as a form of improving the normal, albeit unwanted, racial features. Next, I present the findings from an empirical study that investigates medicalisation and its two forms in cosmetic surgery websites hosted in South Korea and Australia, as both countries are experiencing a growing number of aesthetic surgery clinics for Asians. Finally, I offer an ethical analysis of the consequences of medicalising racial features, mainly drawing from the findings of the empirical study. In particular, I describe how the practice influences individual autonomy and how it impacts on the traditional goals of medicine.

Book Mohs Micrographic Surgery

Download or read book Mohs Micrographic Surgery written by Stephen N. Snow and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mohs Micrographic Surgery, an advanced treatment procedure for skin cancer, offers the highest potential for recovery--even if the skin cancer has been previously treated. This procedure is a state-of-the-art treatment in which the physician serves as surgeon, pathologist, and reconstructive surgeon. It relies on the accuracy of a microscope to trace and ensure removal of skin cancer down to its roots. This procedure allows dermatologists trained in Mohs Surgery to see beyond the visible disease and to precisely identify and remove the entire tumor, leaving healthy tissue unharmed. This procedure is most often used in treating two of the most common forms of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. The cure rate for Mohs Micrographic Surgery is the highest of all treatments for skin cancer--up to 99 percent even if other forms of treatment have failed. This procedure, the most exact and precise method of tumor removal, minimizes the chance of regrowth and lessens the potential for scarring or disfigurement
