I was a silent observer to the interaction of Paul Keiser with the Forest Service, Los Angeles County, Glendora Irrigating Company, and the visitors to the San Dimas Experimental Forest facilities. Much conversation in our home was with authors during the development of their most current writing projects. I observed my hot rod/street racing brother, Keril, and his mechanical friends spend hours in the Keiser garage (in Big Dalton Canyon) modifying their vehicles-the bodies, the frames, the engines-and the transition from racing on public streets to the safety of quarter-mile tracks at abandoned airfields and on desert dry lakes. These experimenters were forerunners in automobile performance improvements. My canyon life observations, the experiences gleaned from others who were part of the Bid Galton Canyon activity, and photos (particularly the photos) are what ignited the writing of this unique book. It is unique because it is a combination of history, biography, and a little autobiography all spiked with bits of humor. Glendora´s Backyard Big Dalton Canyon is the culmination of the opportunity to share with others the 1935-1951 life in that canyon. The nucleus for the dam book is a photo collection. The intent for writing the book was to weave around those pictures the story they represent. Examples of unique history, psychological factors, and education are: flag twirling, creating good from adversity (depression years coping activities), and the big bird/shrew and "sassy" girls incidents. The historical period is one step beyond the horse and buggy era and prior to the electronics age. Airplanes were a novelty. Artistic license deviates from historical facts in the "Mountain peace musically" account about Alice (walking and singing at night is factual), but that deviation is fitting. Read and enjoy.

Hence, the present ICOLD Bulletin 177 supersedes ICOLD Bulletin 126 (‘Roller-compacted concrete dams - State of the art and case histories’, published in 2003) and ICOLD Bulletin 75 (‘Roller-Compacted Concrete for Gravity Dams’ published in 1989). While roller-compacted concrete technology could have still been considered a new technology in 2003, it is now true to say that construction by roller-compaction has become the standard approach for large concrete gravity dams. This Bulletin addresses all aspects of the planning, design, construction and performance of RCC in dams. Mixture proportioning and quality control are discussed and a comprehensive listing of references is included. Many aspects of RCC in dams have become better understood since the publication of Bulletin No 126 and the present Bulletin contains less information on the particular approaches applied in different countries, but includes more comprehensive information particularly in relation to design, mixture proportioning and construction. With greater understanding, it has further been possible to highlight more definitively the requirements of successful RCC dams, as well as the pitfalls and difficulties that can be associated with RCC dam design and construction. Le Bulletin CIGB 177, intitulé « Barrages en Béton Compacté au Rouleau » présente les dernières avancées en matière de technologie du béton compacté au rouleau pour les barrages intégrant les progrès de la technologie BCR pour les barrages au cours des 15 dernières années, depuis que le dernier bulletin sur le sujet a été publié en 2003. Par conséquent, le bulletin 177 remplace le bulletin 126 (« Barrages en béton compacté au rouleau - Technique actuelle et exemples », publié en 2003) et le bulletin 75 (« Béton compacté au rouleau pour barrages-poids - Technique actuelle » publié en 1989).
