However, the record shows clearly that continued effort is required in the elimination of preventable disease. In each year one case of smallpox was reported. There were also typhoid fever and diphtheria cases and deaths, yet we know how to prevent these diseases. Poliomyelitis, while not epidemic, had its highest incidence since 1947 and its fifth highest incidence on record. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twenty-Third Biennial Report of the Montana State Board of Health, for the Years 1945-1946: Vital Statistics for the Years 1944-1945 The legislature of 1945 added one new division, that; of Tuberculosis Control, to the State Board of Health. It also passed a law making possible the organization of full-time county or district health depart ments. This, from the standpoint of public health, is the greatest need in the State at the present time. Less than one-third of the population of the State has available the minimum amount of public health services which are considered essential if the people are to enjoy the maximum of health. Another criti'cal situation confronting the department of health is that of adequate office space for the department. At the present time different divisions occupy office space in four different buildings, one of them being two and one-half miles from the Board of Health Building. This adds to confusion in the integration of the work of the different divisions and to administrative direction. All the divisions during the biennial period have at some time been seriously handicapped by lack of personnel. This has. Been particularly true as to trained professional personnel. In spite of' all the problems and difficulties resulting from the late war, this State has enjoyed the lowest incidence especially from epi demies and communicable diseases, of any biennial period for which the State Board of Health has records.
