Book Dieterich Buxtehude

Download or read book Dieterich Buxtehude written by Kerala J. Snyder and published by University Rochester Press. This book was released on 1987 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An enlightening, revised edition of the definitive biography on celebrated organist and composer, Dieterich Buxtehude. This book is a new edition of the most comprehensive life-and-works study of the great Baroque-era organist and composer Dieterich Buxtehude (ca. 1637-1707), released to celebrate the tercentenary of the composer's death. Originally published in 1987 and long out of print, Dieterich Buxtehude: Organist in Lübeck is considered by most musicologists to be the definitive biography. It also includes close description of Buxtehude's compositional output, from trio sonatas to the famed Abendmusiken: Buxtehude's yearly oratorio presentations. The young J. S. Bach traveled to Lübeck on foot in 1705 to learn as much as he could from the great master of the organ and of Lutheranchurch music. The revised edition contains new information on the organs that Buxtehude played in Scandinavia and Lübeck, excerpts from the newly available account books from St. Mary's in Lübeck, a discussion of newly discovered sources, including one written by J. S. Bach, an evaluation of recent scholarship on Buxtehude, and an extensive bibliography. Written for both the casual reader and the serious scholar. The accompanying music CD (this material is now provided on a companion website) provides examples of all genres discussed in the book -- vocal works, a trio sonata, harpsichord music, and organ music newly recorded on the North German meantone organ in Gothenburg, Sweden, by a noted specialist in this repertoire, Hans Davidsson, who is professor of organ at the University of Rochester's Eastman School of Music and the founder of the Göteborg Organ Art Center (GOArt). Kerala J.Snyder is Professor Emerita of Musicology, Eastman School of Music (University of Rochester).

Book Music of the past instruments and imagination

Download or read book Music of the past instruments and imagination written by Michael Latcham and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2006 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. This volume presents the proceedings of the second International Congress organised in Lausanne by the harmoniques Foundation and held in the Spring of 2004. The papers were given by experts on brass and stringed keyboard instruments. The emphasis was on a variety of historical instrument-making traditions and on the history of the revival of the use of early instruments. The contributions not only included detailed discussions regarding the parameters of performance practice and the use of historical instruments but also about the inspiration given by some of the leading revivalists in these fields. In many cases the contributors placed a special focus on the performance of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach.

Book Analyzing Bach Cantatas

    Book Details:
  • Author : Eric Chafe
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2003-03-27
  • ISBN : 0199882975
  • Pages : 310 pages

Download or read book Analyzing Bach Cantatas written by Eric Chafe and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2003-03-27 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bach's cantatas are among the highest achievements of Western musical art, yet studies of the individual cantatas that are both illuminating and detailed are few. In this book, noted Bach expert Eric Chafe combines theological, historical, analytical, and interpretive approaches to the cantatas to offer readers and listeners alike the richest possible experience of these works. A respected theorist of seventeenth-century music, Chafe is sensitive to the composer's intentions and to the enduring and universal qualities of the music itself. Concentrating on a small number of representative cantatas, mostly from the Leipzig cycles of 1723-24 and 1724-25, and in particular on Cantata 77, Chafe shows how Bach strove to mirror both the dogma and the mystery of religious experience in musical allegory. Analyzing Bach Cantatas offers valuable information on the theological relevance of the structure of the liturgical year for the design and content of these works, as well as a survey of the theories of modality that inform Bach's compositional style. Chafe demonstrates that, while Bach certainly employed "pictorialism" and word-painting in his compositions, his method of writing music was a more complex amalgam of theological concepts and music theory. Regarding the cantatas as musical allegories that reflect the fundamental tenets of Lutheran theology as established during Bach's lifetime, Chafe synthesizes a number of key musical and theological ideas to illuminate the essential character of these great works. This unique and insightful book offers an essential methodology for understanding one of the central bodies of work in the Western musical canon. It will prove indispensable for all students and scholars of Bach's work, musicology, and theological studies.

Book Spirits and Clocks

    Book Details:
  • Author : Dennis Des Chene
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press
  • Release : 2018-10-18
  • ISBN : 1501723723
  • Pages : 198 pages

Download or read book Spirits and Clocks written by Dennis Des Chene and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-10-18 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the basis of modern biology is Cartesian, Descartes's theories of biology have been more often ridiculed than studied. Yet, Dennis Des Chene demonstrates, the themes, arguments, and vocabulary of his mechanistic biology pervade the writings of many seventeenth-century authors. In his illuminating account of Cartesian physiology in its historical context, Des Chene focuses on the philosopher's innovative reworking of that field, including the nature of life, the problem of generation, and the concepts of health and illness. Des Chene begins by surveying works that Descartes would likely have encountered, from late Aristotelian theories of the soul to medical literature and treatises on machines. The Cartesian theory of vital operations is examined with particular attention to the generation of animals. Des Chene also considers the role of the machine-model in furnishing a method in physiology, the ambiguities of the notion of machine, and of Descartes's problem of simulation. Finally, he looks at the various kinds of unity of the body, both in itself and in its union with the soul. Spirits and Clocks continues Des Chene's highly regarded exploration—begun in his previous book, Life's Form—of the scholastic and Cartesian sciences as well as the dialogue between these two worldviews.
