Download or read book Facsimiles of Biblical Manuscripts in the British Museum Classic Reprint written by Frederic G. Kenyon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-08 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Facsimiles of Biblical Manuscripts in the British Museum The text of the Vulgate, such as the Lindisfarne and the Harley Gospels; ancient relics of the English Church, such as the (so-called) Psalter of Augustine and the Lindisfarne Gospels, which contain, in addition to their Latin texts, the earliest translations of these into English now extant; representatives of the revival of Biblical study in France under Charlemagne, in the Golden Gospels and the revised Vulgates of Alcuin and Theodulf; a beautiful specimen of English illumination in the Winchester Gospels of the time of Cnut; and an example of the standard text of the Latin Bible which emanated from the University of Paris in the thirteenth century. From the Bible of Western Christendom in general, we turn to the Bible of the English Church in particular, which was derived from it; showing in succession the versions of the Gospels and Of the Pentateuch which were produced about the year 1000 in southern England, the translations of the Psalter which are the first signs of the revival of the vernacular Bible after the Norman Conquest, and finally the two versions of the entire Bible produced by Wycliffe and his followers, which for the first time placed the Scriptures in the hands of the common people. Book Gospel Books and Early Latin Manuscripts

Download or read book Gospel Books and Early Latin Manuscripts written by Patrick McGurk and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gospel books are the most numerous and important of surviving early medieval Latin manuscripts, and these essays represent stages in an examination of their structure, arrangement, contents, and texts. New details and aspects of the books, links between Gospel texts of different regions and scriptoria, and much new information has been uncovered, starting with the preliminary survey of 1949, and including now classic studies of the Irish pocket Gospel book, and of the Book of Kells. The chronological scope also includes Anglo-Saxon Gospels of the 10th and 11th centuries, and the only survey of these books, hitherto accessible in an expensive facsimile edition, is made available here. The subject matter of these essays has been widened by including a preliminary examination of citation marks in early Latin manuscripts, and a review of the oldest Biblical manuscripts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christopher Columbus returned to Europe in the final days of 1500, ending his third voyage to the Indies not in triumph but in chains. Seeking to justify his actions and protect his rights, he began to compile biblical texts and excerpts from patristic writings and medieval theology in a manuscript known as the Book of Prophecies. This unprecedented collection was designed to support his vision of the discovery of the Indies as an important event in the process of human salvation - a first step toward the liberation of Jerusalem and the Holy Land from Muslim domination. This work is part of a twelve-volume series produced by U.C.L.A.'s Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies which involved the collaboration of some forty scholars over the course of fourteen years. In this volume of the series, Roberto Rusconi has written a complete historical introduction to the Book of Prophecies, describing the manuscript's history and analyzing its principal themes. His edition of the documents, the only modern one, includes a complete critical apparatus and detailed commentary, while the facing-page English translations allow Columbus's work to be appreciated by the general public and scholars alike.

Book excerpt: A provocative book from a highly original scholar, challenging much of what we know about early Christian manuscripts In this bold and groundbreaking book, Brent Nongbri provides an up-to-date introduction to the major collections of early Christian manuscripts and demonstrates that much of what we thought we knew about these books and fragments is mistaken. While biblical scholars have expended much effort in their study of the texts contained within our earliest Christian manuscripts, there has been a surprising lack of interest in thinking about these books as material objects with individual, unique histories. We have too often ignored the ways that the antiquities market obscures our knowledge of the origins of these manuscripts. Through painstaking archival research and detailed studies of our most important collections of early Christian manuscripts, Nongbri vividly shows how the earliest Christian books are more than just carriers of texts or samples of handwriting. They are three-dimensional archaeological artifacts with fascinating stories to tell, if we’re willing to listen.

Book The Message of Acts in Codex Bezae vol 3

Download or read book The Message of Acts in Codex Bezae vol 3 written by Josep Rius-Camps and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2007-09-13 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third volume in the four-volume commentary on the Book of Acts, this work presents a fresh look at the text of Codex Bezae and compares its message with that of the more familiar Alexandrian text of which Codex Vaticanus is taken as a representative. It deals with Acts 13.1-18.23, the chapters that cover the first two stages of the mission to the Gentiles, with the intervening meeting in Jerusalem (14.28-15.41). For each section, there is a side by side translation of the Bezan and Vaticanus manuscripts, followed by a full critical apparatus which deals with more technical matters, and finally, a commentary which explores in detail the differences in the message of the two texts. Of particular interest in this part of Acts are the person of Paul and the unfolding of his character and theology. It is found that in the Bezan text Luke portrays him as a fallible disciple of Jesus who, despite his powerful enthusiasm, is hindered by his traditional Jewish understanding from fully carrying out the mission entrusted to him in these first stages. The conclusion is drawn that the portrait of an exemplary hero in the Alexandrian text is a later modification of the flawed picture.

Book The Holkham Bible Picture Book

Download or read book The Holkham Bible Picture Book written by Michelle P. Brown and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This celebrated medieval picture-book tells the Biblical story, with the help of illustrations of everyday 14th-century England. It is only loosely based on the Bible and includes plenty of apocryphal episodes, for example Christ 'surfing' on sunbeams as a child. The costumes, tools, weapons and buildings in the pictures give us a near documentary-style representation of many occupations in the age of Chaucer, such as dyer, smith, carpenter and midwife. This distinctive manuscript has now been carefully photographed and reproduced on special paper designed to replicate the look and feel of the original vellum. The facsimile includes Michelle's Brown's full transcript and translation of the text, and a commentary based on her unrivalled knowledge of the period.
