Book Bible Links and Daily Supply Classic Reprint

Download or read book Bible Links and Daily Supply Classic Reprint written by Mrs. Sarah B. Casterline and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible Links and Daily Supply I have taken great delight in taking the texts by course from Genesis through to Revelation, thus forming links to a chain reach ing through the inspired Word. A text for every day in the year. Hope it may meet with favor to Bible readers as they peruse the Sacred page. Very many methinks as they learn the verse on the morning of each day, and treasure it in their hearts, will so feed on the bread sent down from heaven that they will be nourished, and strengthened with might, and power by the Spirit in the inner man, and grow more and more in love with the Word day by day; and will evidence its effects by letting their light shine upon others creating within them the same love, thus proving that our Bible is an inspired Book. It has been said that the hiding of God's Word in our hearts from day to day, if we obey it, will keep us from sinning, and who that has tasted of the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come desires to live without the aid secured by memorizing the word day by day. I have also coupled a verse of poetry, carefully selected, with each text of Scripture, which points toward the same subject, and adding new lustre to the text. Hoping it will meet with your approbation and also of all to whom it may come. The Bible is my Chart, By it the seas I know, I cannot with it part. Book Why Catholic Bibles Are Bigger

Download or read book Why Catholic Bibles Are Bigger written by Gary Michuta and published by Catholic Answers Press. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some differences between Catholicism and Protestantism can be tricky to grasp, but one of them just requires the ability to count: Catholic bibles have seventy-three books, whereas Protestant bibles have sixty-sis - plus an appendix with the strange title Apocrypha. What's the story here? Protestants claim that the medieval Catholic Church added six extra books that had never been considered part of the Old Testament, either by Jews or early Christians. Catholics say that the Protestant Reformers removed those books, long considered part of Sacred Scripture, because they didn't like what they contained. In Why Catholic Bibles Are Bigger, Gary Michuta presents a revised and expanded version of his authoritative work on this key issue. Combing the historical record from pre-Christian times to the Patristic era to the Reformation and its aftermath, he traces the canon controversy through the writings and actions of its major players.

Book excerpt: The founders of the modern recovery movement, including Bill Wilson, Bob Smith, and other early AAs, were deeply influenced by a handful of inspirational authors, from whom they received practical guidance, key insights, and concrete ideas. Their explorations of inspirational literature and useable spiritual methods gave rise to the program of spiritual self-help now practiced around the world as the twelve-step tradition. Now, some of the core books that both inspired and were produced by the early twelve-steppers and recovery pioneers – including the first edition of the 1939 landmark Alcoholic Anonymous – are collected in this powerful resource, The Recovery Bible. Here are early writings by the visionaries of recovery. Their work retains all of its impact and life-changing power – now at the ready for study, immediate guidance, and a lifetime of re-exploration in this one volume. The Recovery Bible includes: -Alcoholics Anonymous, the original 1939 landmark - The Greatest Thing in the World by Henry Drummond -In Tune with the Infinite by Ralph Waldo Trine -The Mental Equivalent by Emmet Fox - As a Man Thinketh by James Allen -The 23rd and 91st Psalms -Religion that Works by the Rev. Sam Shoemaker -The Varieties of Religious Experience by William James

Book The Bible and Poetry

  • Author : Michael Edwards
  • Publisher : New York Review of Books
  • Release : 2023-08-15

Download or read book The Bible and Poetry written by Michael Edwards and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2023-08-15 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fresh, provocative look at the link between poetry and Christianity, both as it relates to the Bible itself as well as to Christian and religious life, by an accomplished scholar. The Bible is full of poems. In the Old Testament, there are the Psalms and the Song of Songs, the great exhortations and lamentations of the Prophets, and passages of poetry woven in throughout. In the New Testament, Jesus describes the kingdom of heaven with poetic epithets such as “a treasure hid in a field,” calling the Son of God “the true vine,” “the light of the world,” “the good shepherd,” and “the way, the truth, and the life.” The Gospels reverberate with allusions to the poetry of the Old Testament; the last book of all is Revelation, a visionary poem. The Bible, in other words, asks to be read poetically from start to end, and yet readers have rarely considered what that might mean, much less heeded that call. In The Bible and Poetry, the poet and scholar Michael Edwards reshapes our understanding of the Bible and religious belief, arguing that poetry is not an ornamental or accidental feature but is central to both. He speaks personally of his early, unanticipated, transformative encounters with scripture. He offers close, insightful, and resonant readings of biblical passages. Poetry, as he sees it, is the vital and necessary medium of the Creator’s word, and the truth of the Bible is not a question of precepts and propositions but of a direct experience of its poetry, its power.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times Bestseller • Finalist for the Pulitzer Prize • An Oprah's Book Club Selection “Powerful . . . [Kingsolver] has with infinitely steady hands worked the prickly threads of religion, politics, race, sin and redemption into a thing of terrible beauty.” —Los Angeles Times Book Review The Poisonwood Bible, now celebrating its 25th anniversary, established Barbara Kingsolver as one of the most thoughtful and daring of modern writers. Taking its place alongside the classic works of postcolonial literature, it is a suspenseful epic of one family's tragic undoing and remarkable reconstruction over the course of three decades in Africa. The story is told by the wife and four daughters of Nathan Price, a fierce, evangelical Baptist who takes his family and mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959. They carry with them everything they believe they will need from home, but soon find that all of it—from garden seeds to Scripture—is calamitously transformed on African soil. The novel is set against one of the most dramatic political chronicles of the twentieth century: the Congo's fight for independence from Belgium, the murder of its first elected prime minister, the CIA coup to install his replacement, and the insidious progress of a world economic order that robs the fledgling African nation of its autonomy. Against this backdrop, Orleanna Price reconstructs the story of her evangelist husband's part in the Western assault on Africa, a tale indelibly darkened by her own losses and unanswerable questions about her own culpability. Also narrating the story, by turns, are her four daughters—the teenaged Rachel; adolescent twins Leah and Adah; and Ruth May, a prescient five-year-old. These sharply observant girls, who arrive in the Congo with racial preconceptions forged in 1950s Georgia, will be marked in surprisingly different ways by their father's intractable mission, and by Africa itself. Ultimately each must strike her own separate path to salvation. Their passionately intertwined stories become a compelling exploration of moral risk and personal responsibility.
