Book Local Approach to Fracture

Download or read book Local Approach to Fracture written by Jacques Besson and published by Presses des MINES. This book was released on 2006 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improving the structural integrity together with the performance (weight, time to failure,...) of structures requires a persisting effort in the field of mechanics of materials and structures. This can be achieved by a better understanding of the relationships between microscopic mechanisms and the macroscopic material behavior and structural response with respect to damage and fracture. This improvement strategy of materials, structures and assement methods can be described as local approach to fracture. The local approach to fracture is an active research field. Initially developped in the context of steel structures (pressure vessels), its application domain has become wider and now deals with various kinds of materials (metallic alloys, metal matrix composites, polymers, elastomers, concrete) as well as various physical deformation and damage mechanisms (plasticity, creep, fatigue, ductile fracture, brittle fracture, ...). This volume contains the proceedings on an international conference dedicated to these issues.

Book Comprehensive Structural Integrity

Download or read book Comprehensive Structural Integrity written by Ian Milne and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2003-07-25 with total page 4647 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this major reference work is to provide a first point of entry to the literature for the researchers in any field relating to structural integrity in the form of a definitive research/reference tool which links the various sub-disciplines that comprise the whole of structural integrity. Special emphasis will be given to the interaction between mechanics and materials and structural integrity applications. Because of the interdisciplinary and applied nature of the work, it will be of interest to mechanical engineers and materials scientists from both academic and industrial backgrounds including bioengineering, interface engineering and nanotechnology. The scope of this work encompasses, but is not restricted to: fracture mechanics, fatigue, creep, materials, dynamics, environmental degradation, numerical methods, failure mechanisms and damage mechanics, interfacial fracture and nano-technology, structural analysis, surface behaviour and heart valves. The structures under consideration include: pressure vessels and piping, off-shore structures, gas installations and pipelines, chemical plants, aircraft, railways, bridges, plates and shells, electronic circuits, interfaces, nanotechnology, artificial organs, biomaterial prostheses, cast structures, mining... and more. Case studies will form an integral part of the work.

Book Biaxial Testing for Fabrics and Foils

Download or read book Biaxial Testing for Fabrics and Foils written by Paolo Beccarelli and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-01-30 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a well-structured, critical review of current design practice for tensioned membrane structures, including a detailed analysis of the experimental data required and critical issues relating to the lack of a set of design codes and testing procedures. The technical requirements for biaxial testing equipment are analyzed in detail, and aspects that need to be considered when developing biaxial testing procedures are emphasized. The analysis is supported by the results of a round-robin exercise comparing biaxial testing machines that involved four of the main research laboratories in the field. The biaxial testing devices and procedures presently used in Europe are extensively discussed, and information is provided on the design and implementation of a biaxial testing rig for architectural fabrics at Politecnico di Milano, which represents a benchmark in the field. The significance of the most recent developments in biaxial testing is also explored.

Book Full Scale Fatigue Testing of Components and Structures

Download or read book Full Scale Fatigue Testing of Components and Structures written by K. J. Marsh and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Full-scale Fatigue Testing of Components and Structures presents the approaches to the testing of full-scale components or structures. The book begins by examining the necessity or desirability of full-scale fatigue testing. Subsequent chapters are devoted to the discussion of fatigue testing done on aircraft structures, railway components, helicopter rotor heads, artillery gun structures, and bridge components. The role of full-scale fatigue testing on automotive components and systems, structural testing in nuclear engineering, and the use of a structural fatigue testing laboratory for other tests are covered as well. Engineers, materials scientists, and researchers in the field of fatigue testing will find the book very useful.

Book Effect of Biaxial Loading on A533B in Ductile Brittle Transition

Download or read book Effect of Biaxial Loading on A533B in Ductile Brittle Transition written by TG. Davey and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of large-scale wide plate tests have been carried out on the nuclear reactor pressure vessel steel A533B to investigate the effect of biaxial loading on fracture performance at temperatures towards the lower shelf of the ductile-brittle transition. These tests have been conducted using a purpose built test rig in which a cruciform specimen is loaded so that a central region (approximately 500 mm2) experienced uniform (equibiaxial) stressing. These tests are compared to the behavior of wide plates under uniaxial loading. Small-scale three-point-bend tests have also been performed to aid the interpretation of the large-scale test results. This paper describes the experimental method and draws the following conclusions from the test results: 1. Failure conditions toward the lower shelf of toughness for equibiaxial and uniaxial loadings may be safely predicted from full thickness three-point-bend specimens. 2. The stress intensity factor (Kc) at failure would appear to be lower under equibiaxial than under uniaxial conditions. In addition, much greater plasticity (as measured by CTOD and stretch zone width) occurs in the uniaxial case. 3. Under equibiaxial conditions, preloading at + 70°C to loads at K levels which could cause final fracture at -130°C would appear to have no significant effect on the fracture performance at the low temperature.
