Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Igbo land isn’t Biafra; Biafra wasn’t Igbo land. Some Igbos seemed intellectually very coarse; excessively dull. “Why, Sir, Sherry is dull, naturally dull; but it must have taken him a great deal of pains to become what we now see him. Such an excess of stupidity, Sir, is not in Nature.” Dr Samuel Johnson “There is Godu oo, chie, chie. Kano Nnamdi, KFC chef, you waka come from London. Nnamdi, are you an anarchist or a ‘Faka?’” Dame Patience Faka Goodluck Jonathan paraphrased. Before secession some Igbos must make sure that there is plenty of grub, and not lament blockade later; necessity may suspend the law, again. “You can always tell an old soldier by the inside of his holsters and cartridge boxes. The young ones carry pistols and cartridges; the old ones, grub.” George Bernard Shaw “Every true Biafran must love Biafra, must have faith in Biafra and its people, and must strive for its greater unity. He must find his salvation here in Biafra. He must be prepared to work for Biafra, to die for Biafra. He must be prepared to defend the sovereignty of Biafra wherever and by whomsoever it is challenged.” Comical Col. Emeka Ojukwu Comical Col. Emeka Ojukwu neither died for Biafra nor in Biafra; did he lie to cretins (not all)? “Beware that you do not despise a single one of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven their angels are always in the presence of my heavenly father.” The Good Shepherd The best interest of children should be at the forefront of all actions of all governments, and their foreseeable future needs should be the cornerstone of all their plans. Reasoning and vision are unbounded; if the Good Shepherd’s is infinite, He must be who He says He is.

Book excerpt: One of the great tragedies of Africa is not only the fact that a million people mostly civilians and a large proportion of them children died in one of Africas first post-independence wars, but that until it happened the world thought Nigeria was immune from the wasting disease of tribalism. It certainly was not because the Biafran War is still the most expansive tribal conflagration that the continent has experienced barring perhaps the ongoing Great Lakes conflict involving the forces of East and West, only this time, with the British siding with the Soviets.Worse, some of the religious differences that emerged before and after that dreadful carnage are still with us today. During the course of hostilities that lasted almost four years, a lot of other shortcomings surfaced in Africas most populous nation, including the kind of corruption that, until then, had always been linked to countries rich in oil. Disunity, incompetence and instability from which Nigeria never really recovered also emerged. Two bloody army coups followed after the rebels capitulated, together with an appalling series of massacres, mostly of southern Christians by Muslim northerners. Half a century later the slaughter continues.

Book Lord Lugard s Nigeria

Download or read book Lord Lugard s Nigeria written by Yinka Kolawole and published by Strategic Book Publishing & Rights Agency. This book was released on 2014-09-18 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nigeria is potentially one of the giants of Africa and indeed the world. Myopia and acrebral waste by functional semi-illiterate military dictators in khaki has ruined Nigeria and continues to ruin the country. The instinct of the military is akin to those of armed robbers, as they operate by force of arms over unarmed and defenceless civilians. Military rule imposed by force of arms against unarmed and defenceless civilians is government of the people, not by the people, and not for the people. Civilian rule is not always democratic rule. Civilian rule imposed upon the people by vote-rigging machines called political parties are as effective as guns as an instrument of oppression of the people and looting of the treasury. Civilian government of the people, not by the people, and not for the people, is exactly the same as military government, as they are the masters of the people. The people did not appoint them, and the people cannot sack them. Nigeria should be governed with the best interests of children at the forefront of all that is done. Their anticipated future needs must be the pillar of every plan. Nigerians are the country’s most important natural resource, and will last far longer than its gas and oil reserves. Treat the people well and the country will respond in kind. Above all, give the poor and their children the “tool” they need to fly Nigeria above the dark clouds that cover it.

Download or read book Modern African Wars 5 written by Philip Jowett and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-09-22 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With decades of research to draw from Philip Jowett explores this extraordinary David-and-Goliath conflict, where the rag-tag Igbo tribal army of secessionist Biafra faced off against the Nigerian Federal forces. It was an African war that captured the attention of the western media, with individual commanders such as Biafran leader Colonel Ojukwu and Federal Colonel Adekunle becoming familiar figures across the globe. The Nigerian forces easily outnumbered their opponents and benefitted from British and Soviet equipment, yet against all the odds the Biafrans held out for two and a half years, inflicting many setbacks on the Federal forces before their eventual surrender in 1970. Specially commissioned artwork and historical photos, including some from respected Italian war photographer Romano Ganoni, reflect the diverse array of uniforms and equipment on both sides, with images ranging from Sandhurst-educated officers in immaculate uniform to ragged militiamen armed with World War II kit.

Book The Politics of Biafra

Download or read book The Politics of Biafra written by Chudi Offodile and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Politics of Biafra and Future of Nigeria is a reflection on the importance of history in addressing present realities and the future of coexistance of Nigeria’s multi ethnic society. It analyses the ideological struggles and conflict in Biafra during the war with Nigeria from 1967-1970, the impact of the war and the relevance of those struggles to the current agitations for a new state of Biafra. In this historical and analytical work, the author observes that nearly fifty years after the end of the Nigerian-Biafra war in 1970, Nigeria is still grappling with the Biafran dilemma. No matter its pretensions, Nigeria will at some point have to reform its present pseudo federal arrangement to create a more inclusive, equitable and proper federal structure. If not, the country will continue to face epileptic developmental thrusts, militancy in the Niger Delta and a ruinous intensifying clamour for self-determination by disadvantaged ethnic groups, especially the Igbo. The author argues that in the world, in the era of technology inspired globalisation, it is impossible to hold an unwilling people hostage in any country without negative consequences. He makes a case for a new order in Nigeria, expressing the view that Nigeria is caught in a vicious circle of graft and instability and nothing will change until Nigeria finds the proper foundational matrix to galvanise the talents and resources of the people and create a productive economy.

Book New Perspectives on the Nigeria Biafra War

Download or read book New Perspectives on the Nigeria Biafra War written by Chima J. Korieh and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-10-13 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Perspectives on the Nigeria-Biafra War: No Victor, No Vanquished analyzes the continued impact of the Nigeria-Biafra war on the Igbo, the failure of the reconstruction and reconciliation effort in the post-war period, and the politics of exclusion of the memory of the war in public discourse in Nigeria. Furthermore, New Perspectives on the Nigeria-Biafra War explores the resilience of the Igbo people and the different strategies they have employed to preserve the history and memory of Biafra. The contributors argue that the war had important consequences for the socio-political developments in the post-war period, ushering in two differing ideologies: a paternalistic ideology of “co-option” of the Igbo by the Nigerian state, under the false premise of ‘No Victor, No Vanquished,” and the Igbo commitment to self-preservation on the other.

Book The Biafran War and Postcolonial Humanitarianism

Download or read book The Biafran War and Postcolonial Humanitarianism written by Lasse Heerten and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-09-28 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summer of 1968, audiences around the globe were shocked when newspapers and television stations confronted them with photographs of starving children in the secessionist Republic of Biafra. This global concern fundamentally changed how the Nigerian Civil War was perceived: an African civil war that had been fought for one year without fostering any substantial interest from international publics became 'Biafra' - the epitome of humanitarian crisis. Based on archival research from North America, Western Europe and Sub-Saharan Africa, this book is the first comprehensive study of the global history of the conflict. A major addition to the flourishing history of human rights and humanitarianism, it argues that the global moment 'Biafra' is closely linked to the ascendance of human rights, humanitarianism, and Holocaust memory in a postcolonial world. The conflict was a key episode for the re-structuring of the relations between the West and the Third World.
