A Hindu lineage prominent in North India since the eleventh century, Nāths are well-known as adepts of Hatha yoga and alchemical practices said to increase longevity. Long a heterogeneous group, some Nāths are ascetics and some are householders; some are dedicated to personified forms of Shiva, others to a formless god, still others to Vishnu. The essays in the first part of the book deal with the history and historiography of the Nāths, their literature, and their relationships with other religious movements in India. Essays in the second part discuss the legends and folklore of the Nāths and provide an exploration of their religious ideas. Contributors to the volume depict a variety of local areas where this lineage is prominent and highlight how the Nāths have been a link between religious, metaphysical, and even medical traditions in India.

Book They Sing the Wedding of God

Download or read book They Sing the Wedding of God written by John Napier and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-06-12 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Rajasthan, India, a caste of musicians and mendicants, the Nath-Jogis, sing stories of kings who renounce their thrones to become wandering mendicants. They also sing of a god, Mahadeva, Shiva, who must abandon his world-renouncing life and marry, thus establishing the very caste that tells his story. This is the first detailed ethnomusicological study of the music of this caste, examining how the existential questions of the sung stories--of the conflict between loyalty to families or communities and the transcending desire to renounce the material world--are articulated in musical performances in which the caste's own ethnography is inscribed. Discussing the relationship between the performed repertoire and the caste's identity, the contexts of performance and ways in which familiar stories are effectively retold, the book offers a transcription, translation and musical and ethnographic analysis of one performance, by Kishori Nath, and shows how the questions the performances project are not merely speculative acts of self-identification but also challenges to audiences to consider their own responses.

Book Medieval Panjab in Transition

Download or read book Medieval Panjab in Transition written by Surinder Singh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-06-08 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reconstructs the historical transition in the undivided Panjab during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It shows that the assertion of Mughal and Afghan suzerainty faced sustained resistance from local elements, particularly the autonomous tribes and hill chiefdoms. In central plains, Dulla Bhatti mobilized the toilers of his ancestral domain and, leading a relentless fight against the Mughal oppression, became an abiding symbol of resistance in the collective memory. The multicultural legacy of Panjab evolved through diverse strands of spirituality. The jogis, wedded to monastic discipline, supernatural abilities and land grants, gained acceptance through their exertions for social betterment. The Sabiri and Qadiri silsilas channelized mystical urges towards the technique of prime recitation. The popular verses of Shah Husain, Baba Lal and Sultan Bahu proposed a loving relation with God. The legendary lovers, perishing in the struggles against patriarchal forces, promoted a merger of dissent with spirituality. In the city of Lahore, the material pursuits and cultural life were visible in a mosaic of descriptions, including episodes of social tension. The book understands the upliftment of depressed castes as a defining feature of Sikhism. It places egalitarian concern of the Sikh Gurus alongside the anti-caste protests of Namdev, Kabir and Ravidas. Owing to scriptural authority and congregational equality, the members of depressed castes attained a numerical majority in the Sikh warrior bands that shook the foundations of the Mughal state. The work relies on evidence from the Persian chronicles, Mughal newsletters, Sufi writings, Sikh literature and Punjabi folklore. Please note: Taylor & Francis does not sell or distribute the Hardback in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Book Journeys

Download or read book Journeys written by Geeti Sen and published by Viking Penguin. This book was released on 2004 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Journeys are voyages of discovery, infinitely enriching explorations of the self and of the universe. Journeys can take you to the Himalayas, across oceans, into the wilderness of forests and to the farthest corners of the earth and the human mind. Such journeys are sagas of the human spirit and of endurance the will to break free from the mundane and the familiar. This unique volume of twenty-two essays, photoessays and critical texts brings together accounts of epic heroes and saints, pilgrims and trekkers, journalists and photographers, historians and folklorists. They are travellers who chart their course across vast seas and countries other than their own in search of the unknown and the exotic. While their narratives may be deeply personal, they are, ultimately, accounts of voyages that are universal. At times these are private confessions that transcend details of geography and conquest to express the solitude of the traveller. This volume also includes moving accounts of spiritual journeys that delve into the recesses of the mind like those of Akkamahadevi, Bulle Shah, Nanak, and countless poets, singers and saints and journeys typical of the Indian tradition those of the yogi prince, renouncing the illusionary nature of the finite world to attain immortality. And finally, there is the journey through life by those who are touched by a moment of revelation which transforms their inner and outer selves. Here we follow the path taken by a writer, an artist, a dancer and an activist as they speak of transformation. Deeply felt, revelatory and inspiring, the writings in Journeys explore voyages both finite and infinite journeys into the unknown and into the inner psyche that are a reaffirmation of the power of the human spirit and imagination.

Book Ritual Journeys in South Asia

Download or read book Ritual Journeys in South Asia written by Christoph Bergmann and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-08-09 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the ritualized forms of mobility that constitute phenomena of pilgrimage in South Asia and establishes a new analytical framework for the study of ritual journeys. The book advances the conceptual scope of ‘classical’ Pilgrimage Studies and provides empirical depth through individual case studies. A key concern is the strategies of ritualization through which actors create, assemble and (re-)articulate certain modes of displacement to differentiate themselves from everyday forms of locomotion. Ritual journeys are understood as being both productive of and produced by South Asia’s socio-economically uneven, politically charged and culturally variegated landscapes. From various disciplinary angles, each chapter explores how spaces and movements in space are continually created, contested and transformed through ritual journeys. By focusing on this co-production of space and mobility, the book delivers a conceptually driven and empirically grounded engagement with the diverse and changing traditions of ritual journeying in South Asia. Interdisciplinary in its approach, the book is a must-have reference work for academics interested in South Asian Studies, Religious Studies, Anthropology and Human Geography with a focus on pilgrimage and the socio-spatial ideas and practices of ritualized movements in South Asia.
