Book excerpt: The inspirational sequel to 12 RULES FOR LIFE, which has sold over 5 million copies around the world - now in paperback In 12 Rules for Life, acclaimed public thinker and clinical psychologist Jordan B. Peterson offered an antidote to the chaos in our lives: eternal truths applied to modern anxieties. His insights have helped millions of readers and resonated powerfully around the world. Now in this long-awaited sequel, Peterson goes further, showing that part of life's meaning comes from reaching out into the domain beyond what we know, and adapting to an ever-transforming world. While an excess of chaos threatens us with uncertainty, an excess of order leads to a lack of curiosity and creative vitality. Beyond Order therefore calls on us to balance the two fundamental principles of reality - order and chaos - and reveals the profound meaning that can be found on the path that divides them. In times of instability and suffering, Peterson reminds us that there are sources of strength on which we can all draw: insights borrowed from psychology, philosophy, and humanity's greatest myths and stories. Drawing on the hard-won truths of ancient wisdom, as well as deeply personal lessons from his own life and clinical practice, Peterson offers twelve new principles to guide readers towards a more courageous, truthful and meaningful life.

Book excerpt: An introduction to ethics that will help Christians rediscover a moral reasoning rooted in Scripture and navigate the ethical crises of our time. How should Christians live? How should we interact with one another? Why do we think the way we do about right and wrong? How should we approach today's complex moral questions? Keith Stanglin realigns our ethical thinking around the central question: What does real love require? applying it to our ethical reasoning on many of the social issues present in today's culture: abortion sexual ethics consumerism technology race and politics Moral evaluation must be based on more than our subjective feelings or the received wisdom or majority opinion of our community. But thinking objectively and reasonably about our ethical commitments is a process that's rarely taught in contemporary education or even in churches. Ethics Beyond Rules is a clear and accessible introduction for thoughtful Christians who want to lead moral lives—who want to define their moral code by firm biblical standards while acknowledging the complex nature of the issues at hand. Stanglin's love-based framework for moral decision-making engages Scripture and the historic Christian faith, giving Christians the tools to clear-mindedly consider the ethical problems of today and the foundation to confront new issues in the years to come.

  • Pages : 150 pages

Download or read book Beyond the Rules written by Catherine O'Grady and published by West Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2021-08-13 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This concise book brings behavioral insights to the wide array of topics commonly taught in the required professional responsibility course, including admission to the practice of law, confidentiality, conflicts of interest, representing entities, prosecutorial and criminal defense ethics, litigation and negotiation ethics, legal billing, and managerial and subordinate responsibilities. Behavioral legal ethics relies on empirical research to explore how lawyers actually make ethical decisions in context, rather than how they predict they would decide an ethical dilemma. This approach complements the law of lawyering by seeking to understand how various psychological factors and situational pressures explain and influence decision-making and resulting ethical (or unethical) action. Each chapter explores findings from behavioral science that pertain to ethical decision-making such as motivated reasoning, confirmation bias and other cognitive biases, fast thinking, the fundamental attribution error, wrongful obedience, conformity, moral disengagement, and much more. In addition, each chapter contains relevant case studies and reflection questions to deepen and cement students' understanding of the role of behavioral legal ethics in professional responsibility. Finally, the book offers ideas for individual attorneys and legal organizations to improve ethical decision-making. The book can be used as a stand-alone text in a required professional responsibility course, along with the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct and select cases and materials, or it can be used as a supplement to a professional responsibility casebook. In addition, the book can be used in advanced legal ethics courses. The authors, both scholars in the field of behavioral legal ethics, are professional responsibility professors who have incorporated behavioral legal ethics into their own classrooms. They have found that students enjoy studying and discussing behavioral insights, and that integrating a behavioral focus to the study of legal ethics helps students better understand the ethical doctrines, policy, and context that underlie the law of lawyering and the ABA Model Rules. A sampling of student testimonials include: "I found the psychology of legal ethics extremely helpful. It really allowed me to focus in on the issues I know I will be challenged with when I enter the legal profession." "I liked how the course was not just putting the rule on the board and going over it, which I have heard some professors do. I liked looking at the rules through a behavioral science lens." "I appreciated the unique take from the behavioral sciences side." "It is kind of hard to imagine studying ethics without any mention of the psychological issues at this point."

Book Beyond Rules in Society and Business

Download or read book Beyond Rules in Society and Business written by Verner C. Petersen and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike those who regard leadership as necessarily based on traditional bureaucratic regulation and "scientific" engineering, Petersen (organization and management, Aarhus School of Business, Denmark) extols values not typically taught in business schools or found in the current business environment: shared values, trust, and goodwill. The author first discusses how schemes intended to create responsible institutions may boomerang by sapping individual responsibility. Part II examines the tacit foundations of the ethical social fabric of an organization. Lastly, he emphasizes how such tacit knowledge and values can be expressed in action. In the final chapter on spirited and value-based leadership, he compares how leadership emerges in a child's game with Peter Drucker's ideas on management. Ostrom has often been viewed as a conservative or managerial thinker; but Derek Wall's analysis of her work reveals a how itis invaluable for developing a left political programme in the twenty-first century. Central to Ostrom's work was the move 'beyond panaceas'; transforming institutions to widen participation, promote diversity and favour cooperation overcompetition. She regularly challenged academia as individualist, narrow and elitist and promoted a radical take on education, based on participation. Her investigations into how we share finite resources has radical implications for the Green movement and her rubric for a functioning collective ownership is highly relevant in order in achieving radical social change. As activists continue to reject traditional models of centralised power, Ostrom's work will become even more vital, offering a guide tocreating economics that exists beyond markets and states.

Book Crimea beyond Rules Right to nationality citizenship

Download or read book Crimea beyond Rules Right to nationality citizenship written by Regional Centre for Human Rights and published by Crimea is Ukraine. This book was released on with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the occupation and subsequent annexation of the Crimean peninsula, the Russian Federation announced all Ukrainian nationals living in Crimea its subjects. Residents of the occupied territory faced a difficult choice. On the one hand, by obtaining Russian passports, they formally took the oath of allegiance to the State which had committed an act of aggression against their sovereign-country. On the other hand, during a short period of time (in fact - 18 days) they could try to submit the “declaration about the willingness to retain the nationality of Ukraine” to one of the four offices which accepted such declarations in Crimea. In this case, they suddenly became foreigners at home and were severely limited in their rights. Using the imperfection of international standards in this ng situations of statelessness and resolving cases of dual nationality. Arbitrary change and imposition of a nationality became a new challenge to which the world was not ready. Having imposed its nationality, the Russian Federation «forced into loyalty» the population of the occupied peninsula under threat of criminal liability (see. Art. 275 of the Criminal Code «High Treason»).
