Download or read book Beyond the Old Frontier Adventures of Indian Fighters Hunters and Fur Traders written by George Bird Grinnell and published by . This book was released on 2021-07-19 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A journey into it was believed to be full of peril. In the minds of the general public it was as far away as Central China is to-day. Beyond the great river which bounded it on the east was a fringe of settlements. Scattered through the more distant country were the trading-posts to which the trapper brought his furs. Forts Garry, Benton, Union, Laramie, Bridger, and Bent were some of these. There were a few army posts, and as time went on others were established. Gold had been discovered in California, and a wild rush of people anxious to better their condition had started across the plains, bound for the distant Eldorado. It was a curiously mixed population that set out on this long journey. Farmers from New England, business men and clerks from the Middle States, planters and younger sons from the South; on foot and on horseback, carrying their possessions, large or scanty, in vehicles drawn by horses, mules, oxen, and cows, they struggled westward. They endured enormous toils; perpetually in fear of attacks by Indians, meeting the dangers, delays, and perplexities of wild men, strange surroundings, rough travelling, swollen streams, and exhausted live-stock.

Henryslife, far from the comforts of the American colonies he left behind, was so dangerousthat he was no stranger to the threat of death. As he pursued his fur trade venture duringthe years between 1760 and 1765, he nearly drowned, starved, and froze to death, andon several occasions, barely escaped being killed by hostile Indians. He was lost, alonein the winter forest, had escaped the charge of a great bear, and was taken prisoner inan Indian attack. Henry survived and prospered not only by his own strength and courage but also withthe love and support of his adopted Indian family. Not only did he share the risk andhardships of his family but also came to know and respect the enduring beauty andharmony of Ojibwe culture.

Book This Reckless Breed of Men

Download or read book This Reckless Breed of Men written by Robert Glass Cleland and published by New York Knopf 1963.. This book was released on 1950 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is the dramatic story of men who "belonged to a calling that had no counterpart." The fur traders, trappers, beaver-hunters, or mountain men, says Mr. Cleland, "started from frontiers at which more cautious pioneers were glad to stop." They were men to whom "danger became a daily commonplace ... who took tribute of the wilderness and wandered through the reaches of the outer West with all the freedom of the lonely wind." Before missionaries, gold-seekers, and cattlemen, this reckless breed opened pathways to the western sea. Their story is in the very bones of our history.
