Once again, I was engrossed in the tree-art wonders that lay unnoticed in the mist of the Venice biennales Art Exhibition. Nature never ceases to show that we are all connected. The sun, the moon and the stars are obvious but what about the drawings, paintings and sculptures created in the trees? In this foreign Land, I felt at home because of the trees. This question, originally formulated by the romantic philosophers John Ruskin and William Morris, continues to be at the core of contemporary anti-capitalist and post-colonial struggles. As art and culture feed an urban rentierism based on gentrification, mass-tourism and hyper-consumption, art commons are radicalizing urban politics across the globe through new political and artistic practices. Art/Commons is the first book to theorise the commons from the perspectives of contemporary art history and anthropology, focusing on the ongoing tensions between art and capitalism. Massimiliano Mollona’s study is grounded in an analysis of contemporary artistic and curatorial practices, which the author describes as practices of commoning, based on co-production, participation, mutualism and the valorization of reproductive labour. Art/Commons gives stimulating first-person accounts of five projects the author conducted at the intersection of art, activism and pedagogy, ranging from participatory film projects in Brazil, Norway and the UK to his directorship of the Athens Biennale. Mollona proposes a novel theoretical approach to current debates on the commons, and shows that art can provide both a language of anti-capitalist and post-colonial critique as well as a distinctive set of skills and practices of commoning.

In 2019, we (Kim Williams and Lucas Ihlein) were invited to take part in the NIRIN 2020 Biennale of Sydney. Artistic director Brook Andrew commissioned us to create a project focused on plastic. Andrew's vision involved artists involved at every level of the festival - from publication design, to food, education, and even transport infrastructure - and with our project, an intervention into the Biennale's environmental impact.Our project emerged slowly, over a few years, beginning well before the start of the public exhibition, and continuing throughout the live time of the festival (and beyond). One of the main aspects of the project was a "consultancy" with the Biennale organisation. In the spirit of Barbara Stevini and John Latham's "Artist Placement Group" from the 1970s, the model of artists-as-consultants pushed us into thinking of our role beyond the standard production of content for an exhibition. Rather, we took on the challenge of trying to re-design what a biennale (and what this biennale) could be, both behind the scenes and in the public eye.This publication compiles diverse elements from the project: offset lithographic printmaking, installation art, collaborations with artists including The Sisters of Perpetual Plastix, MC Nannarchy and Rox de Luca, and the creation of a music video with kids. The project was funded by Australia Council for the Arts, Biennale of Sydney, and Detached Cultural Organisation.

Come Closer: The Biennale Reader, published on the occasion of the inaugural Prague biennale, considers the present via counter-hegemonic readings of the past. The book explores various perspectives of class, race, and gender differences in post-socialist states, past and present. In societies today that can seem fragmented, alienated, and sealed-off, a feeling of "us" and "them" can potentially emerge. The reliance on a common language to bring people closer often does the opposite, leading to feelings of contempt, anxiety, and fear. By drawing attention to themes of intimacy, care, and empathy, the contributions in this book search for new types of communication that can bring people together. Like language, art can be used to mediate these differences, and to examine issues relating to how people coexist in society.
