Book excerpt: The Aspect Hypothesis (AH) claims that the association of any verb category (lexical aspect) with any grammatical aspect (perfective or imperfective) constitutes the endpoint of acquisition. The present book evaluates the explanatory power of the Aspect Hypothesis for the acquisition of French past tenses, which constitutes a serious stumbling block for foreign learners, even at the highest levels of proficiency. The present research applies the Aspect Hypothesis to the production of 61 Anglophone 'advanced learners' in a tutored environment. In so doing, it tests concurrent explanations, including the influence of the input, the influence of chunking, and the hypothesis of cyclic development. It discusses the cotextual and contextual factors that still provoke «non-native glitches» at the final stage of the Aspect Hypothesis. The book shows that the AH fails to account for the complex phenomenon of past tense development, as it adopts a local and linear approach.

It contains new experimental data from adult French, Catalan, Portuguese learners, and Italian children learners. Standing research questions are addressed and pedagogical implications for foreign language classrooms are proposed arguing that there are possible commonalities in the instructional sequences of tense-aspect development in Romance languages. The first chapter presents an overview of current theoretical approaches and a summary of empirical findings. The following four chapters introduce new empirical data from a variety of theoretical perspectives (e.g., the Aspect Hypothesis, the UG/Minimalist framework). Chapter 5 proposes practical pedagogical approaches for the foreign language classroom based on empirical findings. The last chapter summarizes and discusses these findings in order to start elaborating a more comprehensive model of the development of tense-aspect marking in the Romance languages.

Book excerpt: The idea that the self is inextricably intertwined with the rest of the world—the “oneness hypothesis”—can be found in many of the world’s philosophical and religious traditions. Oneness provides ways to imagine and achieve a more expansive conception of the self as fundamentally connected with other people, creatures, and things. Such views present profound challenges to Western hyperindividualism and its excessive concern with self-interest and tendency toward self-centered behavior. This anthology presents a wide-ranging, interdisciplinary exploration of the nature and implications of the oneness hypothesis. While fundamentally inspired by East and South Asian traditions, in which such a view is often critical to their philosophical approach, this collection also draws upon religious studies, psychology, and Western philosophy, as well as sociology, evolutionary theory, and cognitive neuroscience. Contributors trace the oneness hypothesis through the works of East Asian and Western schools, including Confucianism, Mohism, Daoism, Buddhism, and Platonism and such thinkers as Zhuangzi, Kant, James, and Dewey. Second, although there is a strong tendency in the field of linguistics to see “theorists” working within formal models of syntax, SLA research can contribute to linguistic theory more broadly defined to include various functional as well as formal models of syntax, theories of phonology, variationist theories of sociolinguists, etc. These assumptions formed the basis for a conference held at Stanford University during the Linguistic Institute there in the summer of 1987. Book excerpt: Chomsky proposes a reformulation of the theory of transformational generative grammar that takes recent developments in the descriptive analysis of particular languages into account. Beginning in the mid-fifties and emanating largely form MIT, an approach was developed to linguistic theory and to the study of the structure of particular languages that diverges in many respects from modern linguistics. Although this approach is connected to the traditional study of languages, it differs enough in its specific conclusions about the structure and in its specific conclusions about the structure of language to warrant a name, "generative grammar." Various deficiencies have been discovered in the first attempts to formulate a theory of transformational generative grammar and in the descriptive analysis of particular languages that motivated these formulations. At the same time, it has become apparent that these formulations can be extended and deepened.The major purpose of this book is to review these developments and to propose a reformulation of the theory of transformational generative grammar that takes them into account. The emphasis in this study is syntax; semantic and phonological aspects of the language structure are discussed only insofar as they bear on syntactic theory.

Book excerpt: The study investigates the role of lexical aspect in the acquisition (use and development) of the simple past, past progressive and present tenses by a group of Saudi EFL learners, adopting the Aspect Hypothesis as a general framework. For the simple past tense, data were elicited using a fill-in-the-gap test (Gap-Fill Past), personal narration (Free-writing), story narration (Tom and Jerry) as well as a Two- Option Multiple Choice Task. The results stemming from the different tasks offer evidence both for and against the Aspect Hypothesis, which claims that use of the perfective past spreads from achievements to accomplishments to activities and finally to states. With regard to Gap-Fill Past, the results show that the use of the simple past was consistent with the predictions of the Aspect Hypothesis, except with the lexical aspectual class of activities, which showed the least use of the simple past. On the other hand, results from the Free-writing and Tom and Jerry tasks show that the participants used the past tense best with state predicates which provides counterevidence to the claims of the Aspect Hypothesis regarding the distribution of perfective past verbal morphology. For the other two tenses, only the fill-in-the-gap tests and Two-Option Multiple Choice Task were used. The results of the past progressive support the Aspect Hypothesis in that the use of the progressive is mostly associated with activities and then with accomplishments. The semantic and structural complexities of the present perfect had a stronger effect on the use of the tense than the lexical aspect of the predicates. The Analysis of the alternative forms for the three tenses gave evidence for the Prototypical Hypothesis regarding the associations between verbal morphology and lexical aspect. It was observed that the present form was used mostly with states and the progressive with activities. It was also noticed that the past and base forms were used mostly with accomplishments and achievements. Finally, it was observed that the learners' interlanguage was influenced by their first language, Arabic. The similarity in form but differences in scope between the two languages has an effect of the learners' use of the different form.
