  • Author : Andrew Picklyk
  • Publisher : FriesenPress

  • ISBN : 1460289331
  • Pages : 154 pages

Download or read book Obedience and Beyond written by Andrew Picklyk and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2016-06-15 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Obedience has always been considered a key aspect of faith: obedience to the word and will of God. If we do not do what is asked of us, and avoid doing what is prohibited, how can we say we truly follow His teachings? How can we claim to believe in His wisdom and guidance? And yet, when one looks more deeply into His teachings, scripture makes it clear that obedience is not enough. It is simply the starting point in our journey-a journey that will lead us to God and to becoming leaders in His sight. To blindly do as we are told is a beginning, but until we step into the kingship Jesus bought for us with his sacrifice at Calvary, we have not truly earned the place God has reserved for us in His kingdom. Christ asks us to follow Him until we learn to walk with Him-until we learn to lead with a servant's heart. But to do that, we must look beyond what is easy... or what is obvious. We must do more than obey. We must be more than servants following instructions. Instead, we need to think for ourselves, and act for ourselves, in accordance with his teachings. In Obedience and Beyond, his first published book, Andrew Picklyk uses scriptures, parables, and personalized sermons to clearly illustrate exactly what is expected of us and how we can move beyond servitude and into the kingship God has intended for us.

Book Beyond Realism and Idealism

Download or read book Beyond Realism and Idealism written by Wilbur Marshall Urban and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-08-30 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1949, Beyond Realism and Idealism argues for a consistency of idealism with realism, or synthesis of the two positions which should retain the essential cognitive meanings and values of both. The argument of this book falls into two main parts: chapters one to six are concerned with the argument for the transcendence of the opposition and chapter seven to ten with an attempt to develop in detail a position which can be described as beyond realism and idealism. The method of the first part of the study is dialectical in the broad sense of the term and chapters seven to ten are of a different character. The final chapter, the Epilogue, discusses the significance of a transcendence of realism and idealism for modern culture and philosophy. This is an important read for scholars and researchers of philosophy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These Advent reflections by the abbess of a Poor Clare monastery and accomplished spiritual writer focus our attention on the coming of Jesus into our lives. There is a double movement to this coming: our active preparation to be ready for him, on one hand, and our patient waiting for the Lord to arrive in his own good time, on the other. There is an art to this simultaneous preparing and waiting, and who knows better than the late and beloved Mother Mary Francis how to encourage us in our attempts to master this art. The joyful yet challenging teaching that we have come to expect from Mother Mary Francis is on display in these Advent conferences written for her spiritual daughters at the Poor Clare Monastery of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Meditating on passages from Scripture about the coming of the Messiah into both our world and our hearts, Mother challenges us to persevere in overcoming our faults, while keeping our eyes on the Lord who has called us to himself, for it is he who, through the gifts of his grace, will complete in us the work of sanctification which he has begun. Although written for Advent, the wisdom of Mother Mary Francis collected by her sisters for this volume is profitable at any time, because a Christian life is one of constant growth into the very likeness of God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Critical insights into Kierkegaard’s influence on Barth’s theology. Karl Barth was often critical of Søren Kierkegaard’s ideas as he understood them. But close reading of the two corpora reveals that Barth owes a lot to the melancholy Dane. Both conceive of God as infinitely qualitatively different from humans, and both emphasize the shocking nearness of God in the incarnation. As public intellectuals, they used this theological vision to protect Christocentric faith from political manipulation and compromise. For Kierkegaard, this meant criticizing the state church; for Barth, this entailed resisting Nazism. Meticulously crafted by a father-son team of renowned systematic theologians, Beyond Immanence demonstrates that Kierkegaard and Barth share a theological trajectory—one that resists cynical manipulation of Christianity for political purposes in favor of uncompromising devotion to a God who is radically transcendent yet established kinship with humanity in time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A SPIRITUAL FEAST! Even as the moth is drawn to self-immolation in the brightness of the candle's flame, so is the spirit of the mystic drawn to self-immolation as it soars to the Sun of its own being. The earth ceases to exist and the heavens grow ever brighter. Words are tattered beyond repair and the spirit becomes one with the living Flame of Love. Such is the ecstasy and the passion as the mystic reaches ever deeper into the mysterious Source of all. Once triumphant in the journey, the realized souls moved by compassion, return to assist others in the upward path. Individually commissioned as the need arises, they come into the prison of this world as ambassadors of Truth. All of us are mystics, but man is an unrealized mystic due to preoccupation with the gifts of this world and his blind ignorance of the Divine Giver. We have become saturated with the world, but the true goal of life is to become saturated with the Divine and return to that home we left so long ago. Royal has been a student at a number of schools of esoteric and mystical teachings in Canada, America, Europe, and the Far East. He states, "Reading these writings of mine are like dipping your toe at the water's edge along the shore of the Ocean of Love for one brief moment; may you be brave enough to dive to the depths." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "From Beyond" is a horror short story by American writer H. P. Lovecraft. It was written in 1920 and was first published in The Fantasy Fan in June 1934. The story is told from the first-person perspective of an unnamed narrator and details his experiences with a scientist named Crawford Tillinghast. Tillinghast creates an electronic device that emits a resonance wave, which stimulates an affected person's pineal gland, thereby allowing them to perceive planes of existence outside the scope of accepted reality. Sharing the experience with Tillinghast, the narrator becomes cognizant of a translucent, alien environment that overlaps our own recognized reality. From this perspective, he witnesses hordes of strange and horrific creatures that defy description. Tillinghast reveals that he has used his machine to transport his house servants into the overlapping plane of reality. He also reveals that the effect works both ways, and allows the alien creature denizens of the alternate dimension to perceive humans. Tillinghast's servants were attacked and killed by one such alien entity, and Tillinghast informs the narrator that it is right behind him. Terrified beyond measure, the narrator picks up a gun and shoots it at the machine, destroying it. Tillinghast dies immediately thereafter as a result of apoplexy. The police investigate the scene and it is placed on record that Tillinghast murdered the servants in spite of their remains never being found. Download or read book Beyond the Centaur written by Margaret R. Miles and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-07-17 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond the Centaur questions the accuracy and usefulness of the virtually unquestioned ancient consensus that persons are composed of unequally valued, hierarchically stacked antagonistic components, usually soul or mind and body. Part I explores the gradual historical development of this notion of person. Part II consists of a thought experiment, examining an understanding of persons, not as stacked components, but as intelligent bodies--one entity. It explores how a new understanding of persons can affect in important and fruitful ways how we live: how we move, feel, think, believe, and die.
