Download or read book Beyond Simple Belief written by JF Jeff Etchberger with JL Julie Lopes and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2021-03-16 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on how God transforms simple belief, that which enables us to believe in Jesus Christ as the Son of God who died for our sins, into genuine faith like that of Abraham, Jacob, David, and others. The biblical texts of the lives of these individuals reveal that genuine belief is the beginning of movement in the process of becoming, of being transformed over time. This process moves a person's faith beyond simple belief, comprised of mental assent to facts, to a genuine faith that encompasses trust in God, surrender to his will, and a heartfelt embrace of what is believed. This genuine faith results in obedience to the one believed. Many biblical texts make it explicit that it is God the Holy Spirit who does this work of transformation. Scripture provides no direct explanation about how that work is accomplished; however, the texts reveal it when you look for it. This book reexamines some of the familiar biblical stories of well-known and important biblical characters. We focus on how God brought about his transforming work through daily life events to move each one, over time, from simple belief to genuine faith anchored in deep trust. This trust enabled them to obey God in challenging circumstances. We pray that this analysis of the great biblical characters as revealed in Scripture will help you understand how God might be working in your own life to transform your simple belief into genuine faith.

Download or read book Simple Faith written by Margaret Silf and published by Loyola Press. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many people, faith is based on creeds, doctrine, and head knowledge. It's about mastering the "facts" and having the "right" answers. But best-selling author Margaret Silf believes that faith is not about mastery but about mystery, and that living in that mystery allows us to properly shift our focus from religion to relationship - a relationship with the Divine. In Simple Faith, Silf encourages us to rethink many of the teachings on faith that may be holding us back from the joy and freedom that can be found only in a meaningful experience of God. Through her thought-provoking, even surprising, answers to common questions about faith—Is it true that God is love? Why do bad things happen to good people? Why did Jesus have to die?&mash;she advocates radically simple yet profound beliefs that are based in a new, liberating understanding of faith itself. Ultimately, Simple Faith, moves us beyond the complexities of conventional religion and clears the path for us to grow in a life-changing relationship with God.

Book Beyond Belief

Download or read book Beyond Belief written by Colm O'gorman and published by Hodder & Stoughton. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 599 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'I was living in a world where a priest who spoke the words of God used me for sex, and there was no-one to tell. The world where this horror happened didn't exist for anyone else.' As a boy in Ireland where everyone -- from among his own neighbours to the powers of church and state -- chose to deny that a priest could sexually assault a child, Colm O'Gorman felt only shame, guilt and fear at the regular rape and abuse he suffered. But Colm would go on to make history, successfully suing the Roman Catholic Church, asking questions of the Pope himself and creating a watershed in history as hundreds more victims found the courage to report their abuse. Beyond Belief is a powerful story of a young man's shame turning to outrage, and demonstrates that -- whatever our past hurts -- there is hope for the future if we are prepared to stand for truth.

Download or read book Faith Beyond Belief written by Margaret Placentra Johnston and published by Quest Books. This book was released on 2012-09-25 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faith Beyond Belief gives a much-needed voice to the “good” people who have left their church but whose spirituality continues to mature. Johnston uses first-person stories as well as known spiritual authorities in describing various stages of religious growth. Some of these real-life accounts are by nonbelievers; others are by those among the growing numbers of the “spiritual but not religious.” All are thoughtful people with too much integrity to live what they consider a lie. The stories of the nonbelievers-including an ex-Catholic, a former Mormon, and a clandestine Muslim apostate who left his community after the attacks of 9/11-show how complete confidence in human reason can lead away from literal religious interpretation. But, while that step is a necessary one on the spiritual path, it is only intermediate. Her second set of stories are of people at the “mystic” level who can tolerate paradox and see truth and reality as multidimensional. Johnston’s book will help doubters to see things in a new light as well as those who are struggling to clarify their own spiritual vision. It also points beyond the atheist/believer controversy wrecking such divisive havoc in our culture today.

Book excerpt: Josh Hamilton was the first player chosen in the first round of the 1999 baseball draft. He was destined to be one of those rare "high-character " superstars. But in 2001, working his way from the minors to the majors, all of the plans for Josh went off the rails in a moment of weakness. What followed was a 4-year nightmare of drugs and alcohol, estrangement from friends and family, and his eventual suspension from baseball. BEYOND BELIEF details the events that led up to the derailment. Josh explains how a young man destined for fame and wealth could allow his life to be taken over by drugs and alcohol. But it is also the memoir of a spiritual journey that breaks through pain and heartbreak and leads to the rebirth of his major-league career. Josh Hamilton makes no excuses and places no blame on anyone other than himself. He takes responsibility for his poor decisions and believes his story can help millions who battle the same demons. "I have been given a platform to tell my story" he says. "I pray every night I am a good messenger."

Not to everyone, it isn't. To some Christians, the gospel seems almost hopelessly confusing. Is it justification--or sanctification--or both? What do those words really mean? Spurred on by personal tragedy and new scholarship from an international group of researchers, Pagels returns to her investigation of the “secret” Gospel of Thomas, and breathes new life into writings once thought heretical. As she arrives at an ever-deeper conviction in her own faith, Pagels reveals how faith allows for a diversity of interpretations, and that the “rogue” voices of Christianity encourage and sustain “the recognition of the light within us all.”
