Book No Kidding

Book excerpt: In No Kidding, comedy writer Henriette Mantel tackles the topic of actually not having kids. This fascinating collection features a star-studded group of contributors-including Margaret Cho, Wendy Liebman, Laurie Graff, and other accomplished, funny women—writing about why they opted out of motherhood. Whether their reasons have to do with courage, apathy, monetary considerations, health issues, or something else entirely, the essays featured in the pages of No Kidding honestly (and humorously) delve into the minds of women who have chosen what they would call a more sane path. Hilarious, compelling, and inspiring, No Kidding reveals a perspective that has too long been hidden, shamed, and silenced-and celebrates an entire population of women who have decided that kids are just not right for them. Additional contributors include Janette Barber, Cheryl Bricker, Valri Bromfield, Cindy Caponera, Bonnie Datt, Jeanne Dorsey, Nora Dunn, Jane Gennaro, Julie Halston, Debbie Kasper, Sue Kolinsky, Maureen Langan, Beth Lapides, Bernadette Luckett, Merrill Markoe, Andrea Carla Michaels, Vanda Mikoloski, Judy Morgan, Judy Nielsen, Susan Norfleet, Suzanne O’Neil, Jennifer Prediger, Kathryn Rossetter, Betsy Salkind, Patricia Scanlon, Jeanette Schwaba Vigne, Nancy Shayne, Carol Siskind, Ann Slichter, Tracy Smith, Suzy Soro, Amy Stiller, and Nancy Van Iderstine.

Book The BBC National Short Story Award 2019

Download or read book The BBC National Short Story Award 2019 written by Lucy Caldwell and published by Comma Press. This book was released on 2019-09-06 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Including the winning story, 'The Invisible' by Jo Lloyd! A young boy takes delight in his mother’s ability to shapeshift from one animal to another, only realising how odd she is when it comes to parents’ evening . . . The values of a small farming village are challenged by talk of a well-heeled community living on the other side of the lake that only one person can see . . . A writer researching the life of a 19th century child custody reformer discovers all too many parallels between that century and ours . . . The stories shortlisted for the 2019 BBC National Short Story Award with Cambridge University variously explore the sanctity of the home and family, and the instinct to defend what’s closest to us. Against a backdrop of danger or division, characters sometimes struggle – like the 15-year-old charged with looking after her siblings whilst her mother works through the night – and sometimes succumb – like the young woman who allows herself to be manipulated by an older, richer man. But in each case, these stories demonstrate what Nikki Bedi argues in her introduction: short stories are not a warm-up act, they’re the main event. 'Bright examples of what it means to write short fiction, and to write it well.' - STORGY 'As ever, the BBC National Short Story Award has an intriguing shortlist... The winner is an entirely beguiling story' - Daily Mail

Book The Broadview Reader Third Edition

Download or read book The Broadview Reader Third Edition written by Jane Flick and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 1998-02-16 with total page 746 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition includes most of the essays that have made The Broadview Reader one of the most popular first-year textbooks in Canada, and adds 18 fresh selections. As before, essays are gathered into groups by topic, but the editors also provide alternative tables of contents by rhetorical patterns and devices, and by chronology. Each selection is followed by a wide range of questions and suggestions for discussions, and the reader also includes a glossary and biographical notes. Most of the new selections are of recent vintage, but in recognition of the degree to which “modern” issues often have a long and honourable history, the editors have also added several selections by nineteenth-century writers. Also, the reader now includes a full section on “Women in Society.” The book’s balance of Canadian and non-Canadian writers has been maintained, as has the range of different styles and different essay lengths that are included. In all, the new edition includes 80 selections.

Book The Discourse of Italian Cinema and Beyond

Download or read book The Discourse of Italian Cinema and Beyond written by Roberta Piazza and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2010-12-16 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roberta Piazza's book is a linguistic investigation of the dialogue of Italian cinema covering a selection of films from the 1950s to the present day. It looks at how speech is dealt with in studies of the cinema and tackles the lack of engagement with dialogue in film studies. It explores the representation of discourse in cinema -- the way particular manifestations of verbal interaction are reproduced in film. Whereas 'representation' generally refers to the language used in texts to assign meaning to a group and its social practices, here discourse representation more directly refers to the relationship between real-life and cinematic discourse. Piazza analyses how fictional dialogue reinterprets authentic interaction in order to construe particular meanings. Beginning by exploring the relationship between discourse and genre, the second half of the book takes a topic-based approach and reflects on the themes of narrative and identity. The analysis carried out takes on board the multi-semiotic and multimodal components of film discourse. The book uses also uses concepts and methodologies from pragmatics, conversation analysis and discourse analysis.
