Book excerpt: This book delves into the complexities of urban crises, focusing on the efforts of researchers and practitioners who confront precarious housing and forced displacement. Originating from the 8th International Conference on Building Resilience (convened in November 2018 in Lisbon, Portugal), this book examines challenges across diverse contexts and geographies, including Chile, India, Kenya, Mexico, Portugal, and Syria. Structured in three parts, the book's 12 chapters address disaster prevention and recovery, humanitarian architecture, and issues related to housing, migration, and urban forced displacement. The narratives emphasize vulnerabilities, community-driven design, and cross-cultural perspectives, comprehensively reviewing global urban planning, slum upgrading, and incremental housing strategies. The contributions engage readers with practical insights for mitigating urban vulnerability and intellectual analyses that consider the complexities of life amid systemic injustices. Ultimately, the authors suggest integrating architectural practice with social work within communities to address intricate urban housing challenges.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did ordinary people live through the extraordinary changes that have swept across modern China? How did peasants transform themselves into urbanites? How did the citizens of Shanghai cope with the epic upheavals—revolution, war, and again revolution—that shook their lives? Even after decades of scholarship devoted to modern Chinese history, our understanding of the daily lives of the common people of China remains sketchy and incomplete. In this carefully researched study, Hanchao Lu weaves rich documentary data with ethnographic surveys and interviews to reconstruct the fabric of everyday life in China's largest and most complex city in the first half of this century.

Book Beyond Kinship

    Book Details:
  • Author : Rosemary A. Joyce
  • Publisher : University of Pennsylvania Press
  • Release : 2017-06-13
  • ISBN : 1512821624
  • Pages : 282 pages

Download or read book Beyond Kinship written by Rosemary A. Joyce and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2017-06-13 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond Kinship brings together ethnohistorians, archaeologists, and cultural anthropologists for the first time in a common discussion of the social model of house societies proposed by Claude Levi-Strauss. While kinship theory has been central to the study of social organization, an alternative approach has emerged—that of seeing the "house" both as a physical and symbolic structure and a principle of social organization. The house stands as a model social formation that is distinguished by its attention to a number of material domains (land, the dwelling, ritual and nonritual objects). As the essays in this volume make clear, the focus on material culture and on place contributes to the ongoing convergence of anthropology and history and helps erase the artificial distinctions between prehistory and history. Contributions to the volume offer significant new interpretations of primary data as well as reconsidering classic ethnographic material. Beyond Kinship crosses the boundaries within anthropology—not only between cultural anthropology and archaeology but between structural—symbolic and materialist approaches and between American and British schools of anthropology; it is intended to advance the fruitful dialogue now taking place within the field.

Book Beyond Real Estate Licensing Case Study Analysis of Behavioral Assessment Relationship Applied to Human Performance

Download or read book Beyond Real Estate Licensing Case Study Analysis of Behavioral Assessment Relationship Applied to Human Performance written by Conrad R. Richards and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2010-02-16 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conrad's new book, "Beyond Real Estate Licensing: Case Study Analysis of Behavioral Assessment Relationship Applied to Human Performance" is an outgrowth of his doctoral studies. The specific problem this research addresses pertains to whether behavioral readiness has an impact upon real estate brokerage sales performance. Although real estate students may score high on the real estate licensing examinations, it may not prove the students ability to perform in a real estate brokerage performance sales environment. The most important performance criteria in real estate sales could be conceived as a developed personality capacity and alignment of motivational values. It is also noted that learning sales facilitators can not guarantee the knowledge transfer to performance unless, behavioral readiness is presented. Therefore behavioral assessment analysis can be considered as an integral aide to performance improvement. The purpose of this study was to establish the organizational responsibility towards behavioral assessment analysis during the pre-employment phase. The results of this study indicate that behavioral assessments may improve the overall recruitment and selection capability and to identify the necessary behavioral readiness that is necessary for knowledge transfer into sales performance.

Widely acclaimed as America's favorite "Arts & Crafts Home," the term "bungalow" may bring a specific image to mind, but it really is one part of a much larger family. This extended family also includes an entire genre of larger-scale Craftsman-period homes, much like those created by architect brothers Charles and Henry Greene.
