Book Beyond Feminist Aesthetics

Download or read book Beyond Feminist Aesthetics written by Rita Felski and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Felski presents a critical account of current American and European feminist literary theory, and analyzes contemporary fiction by women to show that no theorist can identify a specifically "female" or "feminine" kind of writing without reference to what gender means at a given historical moment. She argues that the idea of a feminist aesthetic is a non-issue needlessly pursued by feminists. She calls for a consideration of the social and cultural context in which these texts were produced and received, and demonstrates her method of an interdisciplinary approach to the analysis of literature which can integrate literary and social theory. Download or read book Feminism s Empire written by Carolyn J. Eichner and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2022-06-15 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Feminism's Empire investigates the complex relationships between imperialisms and feminisms in the late nineteenth century and demonstrates the challenge of conceptualizing "pro-imperialist" and "anti-imperialist" as binary positions. By intellectually and spatially tracing the era's first French feminists' engagement with empire, Carolyn J. Eichner explores how feminists opposed—yet employed—approaches to empire in writing, speaking, and publishing. In differing ways, they ultimately tied forms of imperialism to gender liberation. Among the era's first anti-imperialists, French feminists were enmeshed in the hierarchies and epistemologies of empire. They likened their gender-based marginalization to imperialist oppressions. Imperialism and colonialism's gendered and sexualized racial hierarchies established categories of inclusion and exclusion that rested in both universalism and ideas of "nature" that presented colonized people with theoretical, yet impossible, paths to integration. Feminists faced similar barriers to full incorporation due to the gendered contradictions inherent in universalism. The system presumed citizenship to be male and thus positioned women as outsiders. Feminism's Empire connects this critical struggle to hierarchical power shifts in racial and national status that created uneasy linkages between French feminists and imperial authorities.

Book Frank French Feminisms

Download or read book Frank French Feminisms written by Polly Galis and published by Studies in Contemporary Women¿s Writing. This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An in-depth look at three important French-language women writers who tackle gender stereotypes, desire, the body, language and empowerment, this richly documented study is rigorous, thorough, illuminating and highly readable, with broader implications for contemporary feminism and women's writing within and beyond France and Québec. A major contribution. (Lori Saint-Martin, Professor of Literary Studies, University of Quebec in Montreal) This book is the first comparative study of the work of Francophone authors Annie Ernaux (France), Nancy Huston (Alberta and France) and Nelly Arcan (Quebec) and explores their representation of sex, sexuality and the body from a feminist perspective. In particular, this study examines their narrative treatment of dominant sexual discourses, sexual difference and diverse feminine bodily experience. In so doing, this book reveals these writers' distinctive contribution to contemporary women's writing in French and different feminisms, which takes the form of a unique, frank French feminism. This frank French feminist approach, this book shows, is concerned with tackling gender inequality, sexism and misogyny, but also recognises the difficulties involved in feminist action, and acknowledges that adherence to allegedly oppressive gender stereotypes can actually prove enjoyable and empowering for women. This book examines the authors' earliest to latest publications and a broad range of genres and media, including fictional and autofictional novels, autobiographies, critical essays, photo-texts, diaries, journals, illustrated oeuvres, media addresses and newspaper articles. This book project was the Winner of the 2021 Peter Lang Young Scholars Competition in Contemporary Women's Writing in French.

Download or read book Daughters Of 1968 written by Lisa Greenwald and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2019 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daughters of 1968 is the story of French feminism between 1944 and 1981, when feminism played a central political role in the history of France. The key women during this epoch were often leftists committed to a materialist critique of society and were part of a postwar tradition that produced widespread social change, revamping the workplace and laws governing everything from abortion to marriage. The May 1968 events--with their embrace of radical individualism and antiauthoritarianism--triggered a break from the past, and the women's movement split into two strands. One became universalist and intensely activist, the other particularist and less activist, distancing itself from contemporary feminism. This theoretical debate manifested itself in battles between women and organizations on the streets and in the courts. The history of French feminism is the history of women's claims to individualism and citizenship that had been granted their male counterparts, at least in principle, in 1789. Yet French women have more often donned the mantle of particularism, advancing their contributions as mothers to prove their worth as citizens, than they have thrown it off, claiming absolute equality. The few exceptions, such as Simone de Beauvoir or the 1970s activists, illustrate the diversity and tensions within French feminism, as France moved from a corporatist and tradition-minded country to one marked by individualism and modernity.

Book The Risky Business of French Feminism

Download or read book The Risky Business of French Feminism written by Jennifer L. Sweatman and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2014-08-26 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Risky Business of French Feminism: Publishing, Politics, and Artistry examines the institutional history of the publishing house Editions des Femmes as well as its relationship to the French Women’s Liberation Movement (MLF) from 1972 to the present. The founding and subsequent success of Editions des Femmes in the publishing milieu intensified the ideological divisions within the MLF and highlighted the extent to which that movement failed to adequately reflect on the power inherent in its recourse to print culture as an agent of change. In particular, Editions des Femmes produced several periodical publications and pioneered a woman-centered subculture that attached militant political meanings to the practice of buying and publishing books. While the MLF succeeded in changing legislation detrimental to women, it was not able to create unified cultural politics or construct a long-term media strategy that could preserve the movement’s original ideals and unity. Jennifer L. Sweatman explores the long-term dissipation of the MLF as a unified force not only as an outcome of ideological disagreement, but also due to conflicting views on culture, women’s creativity as a strategy for empowerment, and the utility of media for creating change. As the MLF fragmented, unable to fully come to terms with its various consumer identities, its need for capital to support creative projects, and its difficult experience with collective decision-making, the Editions des Femmes’ project was seen as incredibly controversial. However, Editions des Femmes embodied a broader strategy for cultural transformation that privileged women’s creative works rather than feminism, situating it as a successful forerunner of the revitalization of the publishing industry from below as small, independent houses challenged the large, media conglomerate control of the industry.

Download or read book French Feminism written by Danielle Haase-Dubosc and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2003-04-08 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Feminism in France has a long and continuous history which stretches right back to the Middle Ages where one finds texts by women denouncing inequality and the unjust subordination of their sex. In the late sixties and early seventies of this century, however, one finds a radical break with the feminism that preceded it. Marked by a libertarian culture influenced by Marxism, socialism and psychoanalysis, the feminism of the 1970s rejected the reformist and legal vision of women's emancipation, politicised the private sphere, and demanded social and political equality. This remarkable anthology of 35 texts, freshly translated for this volume, vividly maps the terrain of French feminism in its contemporary context from the 1970s onwards. Bringing together the seminal writings of both scholars and activists, the volume will help readers to grasp the questions, the challenges, and the progress of reflection. The essays are divided into seven sections: - The Women's Liberation Movement in France - Women and Creativity - Writing History / Rewriting History - Race, Class, Gender - Legal Bodies / Women's Bodies - Occupying / Capturing Political Space - Feminists Defetishize Theory - Feminist Mappings Overall, this absorbing volume gives voice to the extraordinary range of contemporary French feminism. Each section is preceded by an introduction which places the contributions in their material and social contexts to show how French feminism has evolved in response to concrete struggles and institutional constraints as much as to sophisticated intellectual discourse. Given its unique comparative framework and wide-ranging coverage, this volume will attract the attention of students and scholars in the fields of feminism, gender and women's studies, sociology, history, literature, anthropology, and philosophy.

Book French Feminisms 1975 and After

Download or read book French Feminisms 1975 and After written by Peter Collier and published by Peter Lang Limited, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores contemporary French women's writing through the prism of one of the defining moments of modern feminism: the writings of the 1970s that came to be known as «French feminism». With their exhilarating renewal of the rules of fiction, and a sophisticated theoretical approach to gender, representation and textuality, Hélène Cixous and others became internationally recognised for their work, at a time when the women's movement was also a driving force for social change. Taking its cue from Les Femmes s'entêtent, a multi-authored analysis of the situation of women and a celebration of women's creativity, this collection offers new readings of Monique Wittig, Emma Santos and Hélène Cixous, followed by essays on Nina Bouraoui, Michèle Perrein and Ying Chen, Marguerite Duras and Mireille Best, and Valentine Goby. A contextualising introduction establishes the theoretical and cultural framework of the volume with a critical re-evaluation of this key moment in the history of feminist thought and women's writing, pursuing its various legacies and examining the ways theoretical and empirical developments in queer studies, postcolonial studies and postmodernist philosophies have extended, inflected and challenged feminist work.
