Relocations to different geographic locations within the Parent Company? Global Assignments? Student Transfers to new institutions, domestic or abroad? All are commonplace today. Move beyond “Bricks and Mortar” concerns and delve into the aspects of organization-building that will: • Facilitate seamless transfers • Reduce employee turnover • Increase student persistence • Maximize performance The newcomer experience in organizations and educational institutions can be improved by working the Five Factors that predict success. The SYM- Q Model and research using the model examines the five factors which present the most significant intercultural issues for cultural intelligence in organizations, educational institutions, and anywhere newcomers enter an existing host culture. FACTOR 1: The CQ Exchange (social and dialogue interaction patterns between newcomers and members of the host culture) FACTOR 2: Individual Identity Factors (personal attributes; also called self-identity factors) FACTOR 3: Generational Identity Factors (technology usage and age cohort) FACTOR 4: Environmental Identity Factors (norms of the culture) FACTOR 5: Collaborative Factors (clearly articulated job expectations or clearly outlined programs of study; these are also called Academic Factors in an educational institution). Intercultural Success is a two-way street. Passage is negotiated by each interaction between newcomers and members of the host culture in the remaining four factors. The SYM-Q Methodology prescribes these interactions to help you to make the most of your intercultural experience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During my years of incarceration, I have given a lot of thought to many things I should have in my youth. Upon my release, I was greeted with a reality that is both harsh and unfair to those in my position. It is those harsh realities that forced me to look at things from a different perspective and try another way of life. The experiences Ive had and the lessons Ive learned throughout my life have inspired me to share my unique perspective with the world. This book, I feel, is the beginning of a new way of having a conversation about a particular topic that most ordinary Americans do not want to talk about or even acknowledge. Yet for many in this country and around the world, incarceration, and often recidivism, is an all-too-unfortunate reality. Whats worse is the aspersion cast on those who have fallen into that vicious cycle of crime and incarceration by society.

Book Educational Technology Beyond Content

Download or read book Educational Technology Beyond Content written by Brad Hokanson and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-04-09 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the outcome of a research symposium sponsored by the Association for Educational Communications and Technology [AECT]. Consisting of twenty-four chapters, including an introduction and conclusion, it argues that informational content should not be the main element of education, and that to provide more for learners, it is necessary to go beyond content and address other skills and capabilities. It also discusses the false premise that learning is complete when the information is known, not when learners seek more: their own directions, answers, and ideas. The authors assert that the ability to synthesize, solve problems and generate ideas is not based on specific content, although education often focuses solely on teaching content. Further, they state that content can be separated from the learning process and that instructional design and educational technology must be about the skills, habits, and beliefs to be learned.

Book excerpt: Since the early 1990s, tens of thousands of memoirs by celebrities and unknown people have been published, sold, and read by millions of American readers. The memoir boom, as the explosion of memoirs on the market has come to be called, has been welcomed, vilified, and dismissed in the popular press. But is there really a boom in memoir production in the United States? If so, what is causing it? Are memoirs all written by narcissistic hacks for an unthinking public, or do they indicate a growing need to understand world events through personal experiences? This study seeks to answer these questions by examining memoir as an industrial product like other products, something that publishers and booksellers help to create. These popular texts become part of mass culture, where they are connected to public events. The genre of memoir, and even genre itself, ceases to be an empty classification category and becomes part of social action and consumer culture at the same time. From James Frey’s controversial A Million Little Pieces to memoirs about bartending, Iran, the liberation of Dachau, computer hacking, and the impact of 9/11, this book argues that the memoir boom is more than a publishing trend. It is becoming the way American readers try to understand major events in terms of individual experiences. The memoir boom is one of the ways that citizenship as a category of belonging between private and public spheres is now articulated.

Book Architecture and Leadership

Download or read book Architecture and Leadership written by Mark A. Roberson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-12 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From cathedrals to cubicles, people go to great lengths and expense to design their living and working environments. They want their spaces to be places where they enjoy being, reflecting who they are and what they care about. The resultant environments in turn become loud, albeit unvocal, leaders for people occupying those corresponding spaces. The design and use of work and living spaces typifies and thematizes expectations for the group. Essentially, the architecture of rooms, buildings and cities creates cultures by conveying explicit and implicit messages. This is evident when people approach and walk into St. Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow, the Forbidden City in Beijing, the Sydney Opera House in Sydney, Australia, the Jewish Museum in Berlin, or the Rothko Chapel in Houston, to name some examples. While leaders oftentimes lack the resources to have their spaces mirror the greatest architectural achievements of the world, they are in a position to use the art and science of architecture, at whatever scale is available, to their advantage. The creative and intentional use of space and place advances and promotes cherished values and enhances organizational effectiveness. This book explores the essence of good architecture and establishes relevant connections for leaders and managers to strategically design and use the organizational workplace and space to support their mission and purpose, and create aesthetically meaningful work environments. It equips leaders to be culturally astute on what defines good architecture and to incorporate principles of beauty in their leadership practices accordingly and will be of interest to researchers, academics, professionals, and students in the fields of leadership, organizational studies, and architecture theory and practice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Home - one of the most emotive words in any language. But it can mean different things to different people and, based on extensive interviews, Jennifer Kavanagh explores our outer and inner identities and asks: ‘What does home mean to you?’ Home is not just four walls or the country in which we were born. It is not a locked door, an investment, a legal address, or a nation with rigid borders. Home is where the heart is: a yearning for a precious past, a dream of something that has never been, or a present reality. In relationship – with our families, in community, and with the whole of creation. In this compelling and immensely readable book, Kavanagh suggests that we will never be at home unless we are at home to ourselves. Home is where we all want to be. ,

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the area of finances, our decision to go it alone by not following God’s ways is what relegates many of us to struggle to live paycheck-to-paycheck as have-nots. Throughout Scripture, God gives us full guidance and instructions, processes and commands on how to live our life and deal with just about every conceivable situation that we might encounter. However, He never forces us to follow His ways—even though experience shows His ways are always best for our ultimate peace, happiness, productivity and success. In this groundbreaking look at the parables of the talents and the man of noble birth, pastor, teacher and author Dr. Kenneth Ulmer reveals Christ’s call to us to “do business” for Him. With Dr. Ulmer’s help, learn: • the difference between bringing a tithe and being a tither • the kingdom principle that money is to earn money • how to reverse the errors of taking the process out of prosperity, buying into the poverty lie and letting the world be smarter than us regarding finances • how to become a producer and not just a consumer • and much more. Whether we have a lot of money or a little, our use of the money entrusted to us will determine whether or not we (and our families) reach our kingdom potential—and our kingdom blessings. Follow Dr. Ulmer’s biblical prescription to see the many blessings that await those who will faithfully take care of business and make their money count.

This full-color text takes students step-by-step through the decision-making involved in the pre-production processes of apparel product development including business, creative, technical, and production planning. Updated chapter content reflects evolving industry practice. It demonstrates how these processes must be coordinated to get the right product to market, when consumers want it, and at a price they are willing to pay in an increasingly digital environment. The text seeks to address how functional approaches vary depending on a business's size and fashion focus. More global in scope, the fifth edition includes examples and case studies of multi-national companies and incorporates global nomenclature when it differs from the US industry. This new edition also advances its discussion of how new technologies continue to shorten the product development calendar. The book is written to help students anticipate the chaotic pace of change not only in fashion trends, but also in the fashion system itself"--
