Book excerpt: In seventeenth-century Spanish America, black linguistic interpreters and spiritual intermediaries played key roles in the production of writings about black men and women. Focusing on the African diaspora in Peru and the southern continental Caribbean, Larissa Brewer-García uncovers long-ignored or lost archival materials describing the experiences of black Christians in the transatlantic slave trade and the colonial societies where they arrived. Brewer-García's analysis of these materials shows that black intermediaries bridged divisions among the populations implicated in the slave trade, exerting influence over colonial Spanish American writings and emerging racial hierarchies in the Atlantic world. The translated portrayals of blackness composed by these intermediaries stood in stark contrast to the pejorative stereotypes common in literary and legal texts of the period. Brewer-García reconstructs the context of those translations and traces the contours and consequences of their notions of blackness, which were characterized by physical beauty and spiritual virtue.

This perspective was the view of the people who engaged in the Tower of Babel project in Genesis 11. They presumed to build the tower using the best practices of the time, but without regard to God. They had a modicum of success, but in the end, the project and organization were doomed. Why? Because to assume that God is not involved in organizations is unreality. The presupposition of the book Beyond Babel is that God created the universe including all the principles or laws for all the activities of the universe. This means that God created the laws of science, the humanities, family life, community life, and management. Beyond Babel offers a model for building great organizations predicated on the philosophy that God has divinely ordained the values and principles that will facilitate organizational excellence. The book articulates an organizational model that moves beyond the philosophy that undergirds most organizations today which tends to dismiss divine involvement and direction. Beyond Babel presents an approach to building great organizations based on alignment with God and His purposes. In the end, God blesses people and organizations that are in alignment with Him. The Tower of Babel project was built by an organization that did not align with God-their motives were wrong.Getting beyond Babel is about alignment with God-embracing His philosophy, values, and principles. Only then can anyone build a truly enduring, excellent organization.

The creationism controversy is not just about the status of Darwinian evolution—it is a clash of religious and philosophical worldviews, for a common underlying fear among Creationists is that evolution undermines both the basis of morality as they understand it and the possibility of purpose in life. In Tower of Babel, philosopher Robert T. Pennock compares the views of the new creationists with those of the old and reveals the insubstantiality of their arguments. One of Pennock's major innovations is to turn from biological evolution to the less charged subject of linguistic evolution, which has strong theoretical parallels with biological evolution, both in content and in the sort of evidence scientists use to draw conclusions about origins. Of course, an evolutionary view of language does conflict with the Bible, which says that God created the variety of languages at one time as punishment for the Tower of Babel. Several chapters deal with the work of Phillip Johnson, a highly influential leader of the new Creationists. Against his and other views, Pennock explains how science uses naturalism and discusses the relationship between factual and moral issues in the creationism-evolution controversy.
