Book Between Heathenism and Christianity Classic Reprint

Download or read book Between Heathenism and Christianity Classic Reprint written by Charles William Super and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Between Heathenism and Christianity In the following pages I have attempted to put before my readers a solution of some of the problems to which this question gives rise. No one will deny that Seneca stood on the threshold of Christianity, while in the opinion of many he had already passed within; yet all will admit that, at best, he fell far short of the standard Christianity sets up for its converts. Plutarch is not claimed by Christians, but he exemplifies many of their virtues, and commends many of the precepts they endeavored to put in practice. These two men best represent the strong and the weak points of characters formed under the stimulus of earnest effort to lead upright lives and to discharge faithfully their duties to themselves, their fellow men, and the higher power that controlled their destinies. I have selected a typical work from the writings of both as a nucleus around which to group such reflections and facts as seem best fitted to illustrate the environment in which they lived and the intellectual inheritance to which they had fallen heir, while I have allowed each to speak for himself on one of the profoundest problems that has ever engaged the serious attention of man. Book Paul and Seneca in Dialogue

Download or read book Paul and Seneca in Dialogue written by Joey Dodson and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-03-13 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul and Seneca in Dialogue assembles an international group of scholars to compare the philosophical and theological strands in Paul and Seneca’s writings, placing them in dialogue with one another. Arguably, no other first-century, non-Christian writer’s thoughts resemble Paul’s as closely as Seneca’s, and scholars have often found value in comparing Pauline concepts with Seneca’s writings. Nevertheless, apart from the occasional article, broad comparison, or cross-reference, an in-depth critical comparison of these writers has not been attempted for over fifty years – since Sevenster’s monograph of 1961. In the light of the vast amount of research offering new perspectives on both Paul and Seneca since the early 1960s, this new comparison of the two writers is long overdue.

Book The Encounter Between Seneca and Christianity

Download or read book The Encounter Between Seneca and Christianity written by Paul Berry and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Berry, who is not identified, looks for exactly where in first-century Roman philosopher Seneca's writings he appears to turn away from the polytheism of the Roman empire, from the deities that were enshrined in the Pantheon, and specifically from the state philosophy of Stoicism. He finds the essay de Providentia as the likeliest place to look, and offers a translation on pages facing a reproduction of the Latin of the first printed edition, the Editio Princeps of 1475. The text is double spaced. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book The Pauline Concept of Supernatural Powers

Download or read book The Pauline Concept of Supernatural Powers written by Kabiro wa Gatumu and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-02-20 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of supernatural powers is fraught with vexing hermeneutical challenges, which aggravate further in the African context. While on the one hand Western anthropology tends to discount the idea of supernatural powers by attempting to 'explain them away', on the other Western biblical scholarship has mainly worked from the premise of 'demythologizing' them. But none of these approaches make tangible sense to African scholars for whom supernatural powers constitute an integral component of their spiritual psyche. This book, based on an examination of over a thousand documentary sources (both classic and modern), attempts to address the issue of interpreting supernatural powers from an African worldview. The author analyzes, identifies, and critiques major hermeneutical errors and offers a 'bridging hermeneutic' using the method of reader-response criticism.

Book Dictionary of New Testament Background

Download or read book Dictionary of New Testament Background written by CRAIG A EVANS and published by Inter-Varsity Press. This book was released on 2020-05-21 with total page 2089 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 'Dictionary of New Testament Background' joins the 'Dictionary of Jesus and the Gospels', the 'Dictionary of Paul and his Letters' and the 'Dictionary of the Later New Testament and its Developments' as the fourth in a landmark series of reference works on the Bible. In a time when our knowledge of the ancient Mediterranean world has grown, this volume sets out for readers the wealth of Jewish and Greco-Roman background that should inform our reading and understanding of the New Testament and early Christianity. 'The Dictionary of New Testament Background', takes full advantage of the flourishing study of the Dead Sea Scrolls and offers individual articles focused on the most important scrolls. In addition, the Dictionary encompasses the fullness of second-temple Jewish writings, whether pseudepigraphic, rabbinic, parables, proverbs, histories or inscriptions. Articles abound on aspects of Jewish life and thought, including family, purity, liturgy and messianism. The full scope of Greco-Roman culture is displayed in articles ranging across language and rhetoric, literacy and book benefactors, travel and trade, intellectual movements and ideas, and ancient geographical perspectives. No other reference work presents so much in one place for students of the New Testament. Here an entire library of scholarship is made available in summary form. The Dictionary of New Testament Background can stand alone, or work in concert with one or more of its companion volumes in the series. Written by acknowledged experts in their fields, this wealth of knowledge of the New Testament era is carefully aimed at the needs of contemporary students of the New Testament. In addition, its full bibliographies and cross-references to other volumes in the series will make it the first book to reach for in any investigation of the New Testament in its ancient setting.
