Download or read book Robert Rossen written by Alan Casty and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-03-13 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book calls for a re-evaluation of the films of Robert Rossen. Over a 30-year period, he was the most accomplished writer and director who was also a longtime member of the Communist Party, but his achievement has not been recognized, his films have been belittled or ignored, his legacy denied. Rossen's films reflected his times and the American scene with a dramatic intensity and personal expression unmatched by any other filmmaker of the period. The stages of his political journey, from idealism about Communism to his rebellion against the Party's betrayal of those ideals, influenced the rendering of his concerns and themes--the flaws of human nature, the complexities of motives, the paradoxes of betrayal, personal and political. Yet Rossen testified against his fellow filmmakers, and so his morals and character have been denounced, his work diminished as fatally marred by his moral flaws. The opposite is true. Here is a thorough analysis of each of his 22 films and their place in the developing themes of his body of work. It integrates this study of the films with a documented narrative of his relationship to the Party, its history and conflicts, its duplicities--especially the relations of the Party and its followers to the oppressions of the Soviet Union. And so it challenges the validity of the conventional wisdom about the moral issues of the blacklist period.

Download or read book Communism in Hollywood written by Alan Casty and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2009-10-15 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has been written about the history of Communism in America, including the Party's appeal to many in the Hollywood community of the 1930s and 40s. While several books have offered standard accounts of the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) hearings and the blacklist in the entertainment industry, Alan Casty provides a fresh and provocative perspective. In Communism in Hollywood: The Moral Paradoxes of Testimony, Silence, and Betrayal, Casty challenges the absolute dualisms of the period: cowardly informers and heroic martyrs. Drawing on newly available material, Casty illustrates the control by the international Communist movement and the role of the Hollywood Communists themselves in fomenting the intense hostilities of the period. Casty juxtaposes the actions and statements of those who testified and 'named names' before HUAC with Communists who refused to testify and remained silent about the atrocities of the Soviet Union. By providing a scrupulous account of the full scope of the Communist Party in Hollywood, this book presents a more accurate picture of the moral quandaries faced during this dark period in American history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recognizing common tactics used by hustlers involves staying vigilant for high-pressure sales tactics, promises of quick riches, exaggerated claims, and attempts to create urgency. It's also crucial to trust your instincts and do thorough research before making any decisions or investments. Some Examples: 1. Emotional Manipulation: Hustlers often play on emotions like greed, fear, or insecurity to influence decisions. 2. Flattery and Charm: They may use charisma and compliments to disarm and manipulate their targets. 3. Information Control: Hustlers may withhold important details or provide misleading information to control the narrative and gain an advantage. 4. Creating Urgency: Urgency tactics like limited-time offers or scarcity can pressure people into making impulsive decisions without adequate consideration. 5. Complex Jargon: Using technical language or complicated terms can confuse victims and prevent them from fully understanding the situation. 6. Isolation: Hustlers may try to isolate their targets from outside influences or advice to maintain control and prevent interference. 7. Overpromising and Underdelivering: They often make extravagant promises but fail to deliver on them, leaving victims disappointed and out of pocket. By recognizing these tactics, individuals can better protect themselves from falling victim to hustlers and make more informed decisions.

Download or read book After Love written by Noelle M. Stout and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2014-04-02 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focused on the intimate effects of large-scale economic transformations, After Love illuminates the ways that everyday efforts to imagine, resist, and enact market reforms shape sexual desires and subjectivities. Anthropologist Noelle M. Stout arrived in Havana in 2002 to study the widely publicized emergence of gay tolerance in Cuba but discovered that the sex trade was dominating everyday discussions among gays, lesbians, and travestis. Largely eradicated after the Revolution, sex work, including same-sex prostitution, exploded in Havana when the island was opened to foreign tourism in the early 1990s. The booming sex trade led to unprecedented encounters between Cuban gays and lesbians, and straight male sex workers and foreign tourists. As many gay Cuban men in their thirties and forties abandoned relationships with other gay men in favor of intimacies with straight male sex workers, these bonds complicated ideas about "true love" for queer Cubans at large. From openly homophobic hustlers having sex with urban gays for room and board, to lesbians disparaging sex workers but initiating relationships with foreign men for money, to gay tourists espousing communist rhetoric while handing out Calvin Klein bikini briefs, the shifting economic terrain raised fundamental questions about the boundaries between labor and love in late-socialist Cuba.
