Book excerpt: This book, based on actual cases and investigations, tells how a widespread criminal network in Spain and Morocco, stole and sold babies through an underground baby black market for decades. All the while, government, church and doctors and nurses either looked the other way, or worse, conspired together to deceive parents and family while lining their own pockets. You will meet the young lovers whose baby was taken from them and sold away by a nurse working with a nun, you will find out the truth of what a powerful family patriarch did rather than live with the "shame" of having his young daughter give birth to the baby of a charming but poor island musician. You will discover what really went on in a famous clinic in Madrid and how a greedy gynecologist collaborated with a cruel but calculating nun to deceive new mothers while stealing their newborn babies and selling them on the black market. You will learn of the fate of one mother and her baby girl who dared to uncover this evil network across Spain. You will also feel the pain and desperation of a young couple who cannot conceive and who risk it all in deciding to cross frontiers to buy a baby and how that will forever change the lives of a young couple in love who dream of one day being together despite the rejection of their own families who forbid them to ever see one another again. Finally, you will learn why baby stealing started in Spain, how it went on undetected and unpunished for decades and why, even today, thousands of Spaniards search for the truth about their own origins and to hopefully, one day, be reunited with their loved ones.

Book excerpt: At Any Cost unravels the twisted story of Rod Covlin, whose unrepentant greed drove him to an unspeakable act of murder and betrayal that rocked New York City. Wealthy, beautiful, and brilliant, Shele Danishefsky had fulfillment at her fingertips. Having conquered Wall Street, she was eager to build a family with her much younger husband, promising Ivy League graduate Rod Covlin. But when his hidden vices surfaced, marital harmony gave way to a merciless divorce. Rod had long depended on Shele's income to fund his tastes for high stakes backgammon and infidelity--and she finally vowed to sever him from her will. In late December 2009, Shele made an appointment with her lawyer to block him from her millions. She would never make it to that meeting. Two days later, on New Year’s Eve, Shele was found dead in the bathtub of her Upper West Side apartment. Police ruled it an accident, and Shele’s deeply Orthodox Jewish family quickly buried her without an autopsy on religious grounds. Rod had a clear path to his ex-wife's fortune, but suspicions about her death lingered. As the two families warred over custody of Shele’s children—and their inheritance— Rod concocted a series of increasingly demented schemes, even plotting to kill his own parents, to secure the treasure. And as investigators closed in, Rod committed a final, desperate act to frame his own daughter for her mother’s death. Journalists Rebecca Rosenberg and Selim Algar reconstruct the ten years that passed between the day Shele was found dead and the day her killer faced justice in this riveting account of how one man’s irrepressible greed devolved into obsession, manipulation, and murder.

Book excerpt: This is the story of how an infamous murder case led to the birth of modern toxicology. In the 19th century criminal poisoning with arsenic was frighteningly easy. For a few pence and with few questions asked, it was possible to buy enough poison to kill off an entire family, hence arsenic's popular name: the Inheritor's Powder. Yet if poisoning was easy, it was a notoriously difficult crime to prove. The popular press led to the nation becoming transfixed by the idea that danger lurked in every cup and on every plate. 'The fell spirit of the Borgias' was 'stalking through English society' wrote one commentator. Thus, armed with a coffee pot and some 'rat poison' one potential heir saw his opportunity. The case became a cause célèbre and led an unknown chemist, James Marsh, to develop a failsafe test. This proved a turning point in the way such crimes were investigated - but years later there was a twist in the tale!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Isiah Daniels, an intelligent, articulate, athletic black man, from the projects, was recruited to play basketball at the University of Miami by their largest booster, Donovan Taylor, a white entrepreneur who eventually became the Speaker of the House of Representatives for the State of Florida. Isiah, after obtaining his MBA, was hired by Donovan to eventually run his publically held company. Isiah, with Donovan’s bigoted consent, also married Donovan’s eldest daughter, Sophie Taylor, an attorney at one of the largest and most prestigious law firms in Miami. Both of those events were fulfilled for Taylor’s political ambition to become the Governor of the State. Isiah, over Donovan’s objections, began to hire many blacks to work for Donovan’s company. Some of whom were eventually promoted over many better qualified white employees who had more seniority. Isiah’s wife believed that she became aware of a scheme, by employees and customers, to embezzle funds from her father’s Company. She believes that her husband, Isiah, may be one of the perpetrators. Before Sophie had the opportunity to communicate the scheme to the authorities, she was murdered by a hired black old friend of Isiah. That individual, without authorization, contracted out Sophie’s murder to a low life white criminal who bungled the murder dreadfully. That event caused the original black man hired to kill Sophie, to be murdered. This book takes the reader into the world of a racist reprisal by the Taylor family against their black son-in-law and the other persons involved in a multi-country scheme to embezzle funds from the billion dollar Company. The book sets forth the mystery of who committed both murders as well as who were involved in the complicated scheme of embezzlement. The greed of the Donovan’s family and the Daniels’ family and their friends, intensifies the mystery as to whom may have committed the murders and embezzled hundreds of millions of dollars.

Download or read book Hunt for the Jews written by Jan Grabowski and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-09 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revealing account of Polish cooperation with Nazis in WWII—a “grim, compelling [and] significant scholarly study” (Kirkus Reviews). Between 1942 and 1943, thousands of Jews escaped the fate of German death camps in Poland. As they sought refuge in the Polish countryside, the Nazi death machine organized what they called Judenjagd, meaning hunt for the Jews. As a result of the Judenjagd, few of those who escaped the death camps would survive to see liberation. As Jan Grabowski’s penetrating microhistory reveals, the majority of the Jews in hiding perished as a consequence of betrayal by their Polish neighbors. Hunt for the Jews tells the story of the Judenjagd in Dabrowa, Tarnowska, a rural county in southeastern Poland. Drawing on materials from Polish, Jewish, and German sources created during and after the war, Grabowski documents the involvement of the local Polish population in the process of detecting and killing the Jews who sought their aid. Through detailed reconstruction of events, “Grabowski offers incredible insight into how Poles in rural Poland reacted to and, not infrequently, were complicit with, the German practice of genocide. Grabowski also, implicitly, challenges us to confront our own myths and to rethink how we narrate British (and American) history of responding to the Holocaust” (European History Quarterly).

Book Mission as Integrated Witness

Download or read book Mission as Integrated Witness written by Jae-Suk Lee and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-05-25 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study aims to read Jesus’s foot washing narrative missionally (John 13:1–38). A missional reading is identical to a missional hermeneutics based on the literary-theological interpretation of the text. John uses sending language and formulae, and the frame of “as . . ., so . . .” throughout the whole Gospel, which clarifies Jesus’s and his disciples’ mission as integrated witness. In this literary context, the foot washing narrative signifies the integrated witness of Jesus and the disciples. The narrative consists of two parts: one, Jesus’s symbolic action for his death, and the other, for its interpretation for the disciple community. Jesus’s death, as his unique mission, results in purifying both his disciples and the world so that they might dwell in the holy union with the triune God. The disciples are sent into the world. Just as Jesus did, so must they proclaim Jesus and his teachings. Also, they should bear witness to him by living Jesus’s life-pattern of self-giving, sacrificial love, and humble service. Their verbal proclamation as evangelism and life-witness cannot be separated to testify to Jesus and their identity. Finally, today’s Christians, specifically Evangelicals, are invited to participate in the Johannine mission as the integrated witness of evangelism and life-witness.
