Book excerpt: The celebrated Tommy first comes into view on a dirty London stair, andhe was in sexless garments, which were all he had, and he was five, andso though we are looking at him, we must do it sideways, lest he sitdown hurriedly to hide them. That inscrutable face, which made theclubmen of his later days uneasy and even puzzled the ladies while hewas making love to them, was already his, except when he smiled at oneof his pretty thoughts or stopped at an open door to sniff a potful. On hisway up and down the stair he often paused to sniff, but he never askedfor anything; his mother had warned him against it, and he carried outher injunction with almost unnecessary spirit, declining offers beforethey were made, as when passing a room, whence came the smell of friedfish, he might call in, "I don't not want none of your fish," or "My mothersays I don't not want the littlest bit," or wistfully, "I ain't hungry," ormore wistfully still, "My mother says I ain't hungry." His mother heard ofthis and was angry, crying that he had let the neighbors know somethingshe was anxious to conceal, but what he had revealed to them Tommycould not make out, and when he questioned her artlessly, she took himwith sudden passion to her flat breast, and often after that she looked athim long and woefully and wrung her hands.

Book The Looker on

Download or read book The Looker on written by Neil Munro and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Journalist, novelist and poet Neil Munro was born in the beautiful town of Inveraray, Argyllshire in 1863. He was educated in the Parish School and became a clerk to the local lawyer but, like so many young Highlanders, to fulfil his true ambitions he had to emigrate to the Lowlands. On 1st June, 1881 he arrived by steamer in "Glasgow of the steeples" which was to become his new home. In 1884 he obtained his first newspaper job as a reporter with The Greenock Advertiser. After a number of other newspaper posts he became chief reporter with the Glasgow Evening News in February 1888, the paper with which he was to remain happily for the rest of his working life. In 1897 he "went part time", reducing his commitment to journalism to two columns per week in order to concentrate on literary work, and it is during this period that he wrote eight novels, of which John Splendid, Gilian the Dreamer and The New Road are particularly fine. Of the two columns mentioned above, one he called "The Looker-On" which ranged widely over many topics, urban and rural, and was the original place of publication of the famous Para Handy stories. The other column, devoted to book reviewing, he called "Views and Reviews". It was, according to George Blake, the "most enlightened thing of its kind outside the serious reviews". This volume contains Blake's selection of Munro's sensitive, polished and witty journalism from these columns - a mere sixteenth of his total output. With the outbreak of the First World War Munro returned to full time journalism, becoming editor of the Glasgow Evening News in 1918. He retired in 1927. During his last three years he reviewed the events and personalities of his lifetime in a series of perceptive articles called "Random Reminiscences" which he contributed to the Daily Record and Mail under the pseudonym of 'Mr Incognito'. Neil Munro died in Helensburgh in 1930 and is buried in his beloved Inveraray in the ancient cemetery of Kilmalieu.

Book Between Sittings

Download or read book Between Sittings written by Jo Davidson and published by Davidson Press. This book was released on 2007-03 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PREFACE. THE Author of this very practical treatise on Scotch Loch - Fishing desires clearly that it may be of use to all who had it. He does not pretend to have written anything new, but to have attempted to put what he has to say in as readable a form as possible. Everything in the way of the history and habits of fish has been studiously avoided, and technicalities have been used as sparingly as possible. The writing of this book has afforded him pleasure in his leisure moments, and that pleasure would be much increased if he knew that the perusal of it would create any bond of sympathy between himself and the angling community in general. This section is interleaved with blank shects for the readers notes. The Author need hardly say that any suggestions addressed to the case of the publishers, will meet with consideration in a future edition. We do not pretend to write or enlarge upon a new subject. Much has been said and written-and well said and written too on the art of fishing but loch-fishing has been rather looked upon as a second-rate performance, and to dispel this idea is one of the objects for which this present treatise has been written. Far be it from us to say anything against fishing, lawfully practised in any form but many pent up in our large towns will bear us out when me say that, on the whole, a days loch-fishing is the most convenient. One great matter is, that the loch-fisher is depend- ent on nothing but enough wind to curl the water, -and on a large loch it is very seldom that a dead calm prevails all day, -and can make his arrangements for a day, weeks beforehand whereas the stream- fisher is dependent for a good take on the state of the water and however pleasant and easy it may be for one living near the banks of a good trout stream or river, it is quite another matter to arrange for a days river-fishing, if one is looking forward to a holiday at a date some weeks ahead. Providence may favour the expectant angler with a good day, and the water in order but experience has taught most of us that the good days are in the minority, and that, as is the case with our rapid running streams, -such as many of our northern streams are, -the water is either too large or too small, unless, as previously remarked, you live near at hand, and can catch it at its best. A common belief in regard to loch-fishing is, that the tyro and the experienced angler have nearly the same chance in fishing, -the one from the stern and the other from the bow of the same boat. Of all the absurd beliefs as to loch-fishing, this is one of the most absurd. Try it. Give the tyro either end of the boat he likes give him a cast of ally flies he may fancy, or even a cast similar to those which a crack may be using and if he catches one for every three the other has, he may consider himself very lucky. Of course there are lochs where the fish are not abundant, and a beginner may come across as many as an older fisher but we speak of lochs where there are fish to be caught, and where each has a fair chance. Again, it is said that the boatman has as much to do with catching trout in a loch as the angler. Well, we dont deny that. In an untried loch it is necessary to have the guidance of a good boatman but the same argument holds good as to stream-fishing...

Download or read book The Little White Bird written by J. M. Barrie and published by BoD - Books on Demand. This book was released on 2023-05-13 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Little White Bird is generally divided into three sections: the first chronicles the narrator’s life in London, beginning with how he came to know a little boy named David (who joins him on his adventures), and describes other matters of his everyday life. The second section tells the story of how Peter Pan came to be a “betwixt-and-between” and his adventures in Kensington Gardens, including his interactions with the birds as well as the fairies hidden in the park. Finally, the third section of the book revisits London with the narrator and David. The two make brief visits to Kensington Gardens and embark on a new adventure to Patagonia. The Little White Bird is the first story to include the famous Peter Pan character, two years before Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up, the play that made the character famous. While The Little White Bird can be described as a prelude to the play, inconsistencies such as Peter Pan’s age make the two stories incompatible.

Book Scotland s Books

Download or read book Scotland s Books written by Robert Crawford and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-01-30 with total page 848 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Treasure Island to Trainspotting, Scotland's rich literary tradition has influenced writing across centuries and cultures far beyond its borders. Here, for the first time, is a single volume presenting the glories of fifteen centuries of Scottish literature. In Scotland's Books the much loved poet Robert Crawford tells the story of Scottish imaginative writing and its relationship to the country's history. Stretching from the medieval masterpieces of St. Columba's Iona - the earliest surviving Scottish work - to the energetic world of twenty-first-century writing by authors such as Ali Smith and James Kelman, this outstanding account traces the development of literature in Scotland and explores the cultural, linguistic and literary heritage of the nation. It includes extracts from the writing discussed to give a flavor of the original work, and its new research ranges from specially made translations of ancient poems to previously unpublished material from the Scottish Enlightenment and interviews with living writers. Informative and readable, this is the definitive single-volume guide to the marvelous legacy of Scottish literature.
