Book Revenge is a Dish Best Served Cold

Download or read book Revenge is a Dish Best Served Cold written by David A. Jones and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evidence suggests that revenge in the workplace can be quot;cool and calculated.quot; That is, some employees plan to quot;get evenquot; before doing so, consider different options for revenge and the consequences of those options, and carefully plan their revenge. In Study 1, we conducted interviews with individuals who engaged in revenge at work. Most avengers described having thoughts about revenge that were calculated in nature. In Study 2, we assessed a proposed measure of calculated revenge cognitions by examining its factor structure, and evidence for convergent and discriminant validity. Results provided considerable support for the proposed measure (e.g., it correlated with revenge attitudes, negative reciprocity endorsement, negative affectivity, agreeableness, and honesty-humility). We discuss the implications for theory, research, and practice.

Book The Cultural Career of Coolness

Download or read book The Cultural Career of Coolness written by Ulla Haselstein and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2013-10-10 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cool is a word of American English that has been integrated into the vocabulary of numerous languages around the globe. Today it is a term most often used in advertising trendy commodities, or, more generally, in promoting urban lifestyles in our postmodern age. But what is the history of the term “cool?" When has coolness come to be associated with certain modes of contemporary self-fashioning? On what grounds do certain nations claim a privilege to be recognized as “cool?" These are some of the questions that served as a starting-point for a comparative cultural inquiry which brought together specialists from American Studies and Japanese Studies, but also from Classics, Philosophy and Sociology. The conceptual grid of the volume can be described as follows: (1) Coolness is a metaphorical term for affect-control. It is tied in with cultural discourses on the emotions and the norms of their public display, and with gendered cultural practices of subjectivity. (2) In the course of the cultural transformations of modernity, the term acquired new importance as a concept referring to practices of individual, ethnic, and national difference. (3) Depending on cultural context, coolness is defined in terms of aesthetic detachment and self-irony, of withdrawal, dissidence and even latent rebellion. (4) Coolness often carries undertones of ambivalence. The situational adequacy of cool behavior becomes an issue for contending ethical and aesthetic discourses since an ethical ideal of self-control and a strategy of performing self-control are inextricably intertwined. (5) In literature and film, coolness as a character trait is portrayed as a personal strength, as a lack of emotion, as an effect of trauma, as a mask for suffering or rage, as precious behavior, or as savvyness. This wide spectrum is significant: artistic productions offer valid insights into contradictions of cultural discourses on affect-control. (6) American and Japanese cultural productions show that twentieth-century notions of coolness hybridize different cultural traditions of affect-control.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Anger has a bad reputation. Many people think that it is counterproductive, distracting, and destructive. It is a negative emotion, many believe, because it can lead so quickly to violence or an overwhelming fury. And coming from people of color, it takes on connotations that are even more sinister, stirring up stereotypes, making white people fear what an angry other might be capable of doing, when angry, and leading them to turn to hatred or violence in turn, to squelch an anger that might upset the racial status quo"--

Book National Identity in Contemporary Australian Opera

Download or read book National Identity in Contemporary Australian Opera written by Michael Halliwell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-11 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Opera has been performed in Australia for more than two hundred years, yet none of the operas written before the Second World War have become part of the repertoire. It is only in the late 1970s and early 1980s that there is evidence of the successful systematic production of indigenous opera. The premiere of Voss by Richard Meale and David Malouf in 1986 was a watershed in the staging and reception of new opera, and there has been a diverse series of new works staged in the last thirty years, not only by the national company, but also by thriving regional institutions. The emergence of a thriving operatic tradition in contemporary Australia is inextricably enmeshed in Australian cultural consciousness and issues of national identity. In this study of eighteen representative contemporary operas, Michael Halliwell elucidates the ways in which the operas reflect and engage with the issues facing contemporary Australians. Stylistically these eighteen operas vary greatly. The musical idiom is diverse, ranging from works in a modernist idiom such as The Ghost Wife, Whitsunday, Fly Away Peter, Black River and Bride of Fortune, to Voss, Batavia, Bliss, Lindy, Midnight Son, The Riders, The Summer of the Seventeenth Doll and The Children’s Bach being works which straddle several musical styles. A number of operas draw strongly on musical theatre including The Eighth Wonder, Pecan Summer, The Rabbits and Cloudstreet, and Love in the Age of Therapy is couched in a predominantly jazz idiom. While some of them are overtly political, all, at least tangentially, deal with recent cultural politics in Australia and offer sharply differing perspectives.

Book Writing for Justice

Download or read book Writing for Justice written by Elna Mortara and published by Dartmouth College Press. This book was released on 2015-10-22 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Writing for Justice, Elna Mortara presents a richly layered study of the cultural and intellectual atmosphere of mid-nineteenth-century Europe and the United States, through close readings of the life and work of Victor SŽjour, an expat American Creole from New Orleans living in Paris. In addition to writing The Mulatto, an early story on slavery in Saint-Domingue, SŽjour penned La Tireuse de cartes (The Fortune-Teller, 1859), a popular play based on the famed Mortara case. In this historical incident, Pope Pius IX kidnapped Edgardo Mortara, the child of a Jewish family living in the Papal States. The details of the play's production - and its reception on both sides of the Atlantic - are intertwined with the events of the Italian Risorgimento and of pre - Civil War America. Writing for Justice is full of surprising encounters with French and American writers and historical figures, including Hugo, Hawthorne, Twain, Napoleon III, Garibaldi, and Lincoln. As Elna Mortara passionately argues, the enormous amount of public attention received by the case reveals an era of underappreciated transatlantic intellectual exchange, in which an African American writer used notions of emancipation in religious as well as racial terms, linking the plight of blacks in America to that of Jews in Europe, and to the larger battles for freedom and nationhood advancing across the continent. This book will appeal both to general readers and to scholars, including historians, literary critics, and specialists in African American studies, Jewish, Catholic, or religious studies, multilingual American literature, francophone literature, theatrical life, nineteenth-century European politics, and cross-cultural encounters.

Book excerpt: Revenge is a dish best served cold... or at least that's what the vaguely remembered axiom suggested. Having survived his attempt on her life, Alyssa Giordano almost enjoyed watching Duncan Kennedy suffer the consequences of actions he claimed were not his. She saw the wisdom in letting justice take its own path against Kennedy for his earlier attempts at her destruction.Yet Alyssa could not understand why her descent into hell did not stop with Kennedy's incarceration. Her recovery complicated, her law practice virtually destroyed, an assassination attempt on her beloved great-grandfather. It couldn't be Kennedy who was orchestrating the measures against her. Could it? If it wasn't, then who was it? Alyssa would discover that shadowy figures her from her distant past would attempt to exact retribution on her for actions that were not hers.Whether or not Alyssa could fend off the icy retribution for the actions of her ancestors, whether her own chilly revenge would be more sweetly satisfying than cold-blooded violence, she would only discover with time.
