Book Yearbook

Book excerpt: INSTANT #1 BESTSELLER FINALIST for the 2021 National Jewish Book Awards SHORTLISTED for the 2022 Rakuten Kobo Emerging Writer Prize A collection of funny personal essays from one of the writers of Superbad and Pineapple Express and one of the producers of The Disaster Artist, Neighbors, and The Boys. (All of these words have been added to help this book show up in people’s searches using the wonders of algorithmic technology. Thanks for bearing with us!) Hi! I’m Seth! I was asked to describe my book, Yearbook, for the inside flap (which is a gross phrase) and for websites and shit like that, so… here it goes!!! Yearbook is a collection of true stories that I desperately hope are just funny at worst, and life-changingly amazing at best. (I understand that it’s likely the former, which is a fancy “book” way of saying “the first one.”) I talk about my grandparents, doing stand-up comedy as a teenager, bar mitzvahs, and Jewish summer camp, and tell way more stories about doing drugs than my mother would like. I also talk about some of my adventures in Los Angeles, and surely say things about other famous people that will create a wildly awkward conversation for me at a party one day. I hope you enjoy the book should you buy it, and if you don’t enjoy it, I’m sorry. If you ever see me on the street and explain the situation, I’ll do my best to make it up to you.

  • ISBN : 0307554619
  • Pages : 322 pages

Download or read book Best Friends written by Terri Apter and published by Harmony. This book was released on 2010-02-10 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Best Friends provides the missing link to understanding and recognizing the impact of some of the most important relationships in girls' and women's lives. Every woman remembers the sting of betrayal of a girlfriend, and every parent of a daughter has seen her come home from school in tears because a girl she thought was her best friend suddenly and inexplicably became her enemy. While boys hash out differences with fists and kicks, girls' societies are marked by secrets and whispers and shifting affection. The lessons learned as an adolescent girl are often carried into adulthood, making women fear confrontation--especially with other women. But the intensity of the struggles reflects the support and healing to be found within these friendships. Girls find themselves in the mirror of other girls, hence the power each has to influence the other. Ruthellen Josselson and Terri Apter's many years of working with hundreds of girls and women have given them insight into the emotionally important relationships that are integral to a girl's self-image. Best Friends explores the bonds of friendship between girls and between women and the sorrows and joys they experience together, from early adolescence and throughout their lives.

Book Some of My Best Friends Are Black

Download or read book Some of My Best Friends Are Black written by Tanner Colby and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2013-07-30 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An irreverent, yet powerful exploration of race relations by the New York Times-bestselling author of The Chris Farley Show Frank, funny, and incisive, Some of My Best Friends Are Black offers a profoundly honest portrait of race in America. In a book that is part reportage, part history, part social commentary, Tanner Colby explores why the civil rights movement ultimately produced such little true integration in schools, neighborhoods, offices, and churches—the very places where social change needed to unfold. Weaving together the personal, intimate stories of everyday people—black and white—Colby reveals the strange, sordid history of what was supposed to be the end of Jim Crow, but turned out to be more of the same with no name. He shows us how far we have come in our journey to leave mistrust and anger behind—and how far all of us have left to go.

Who hasn't hung helplessly from the chin-up bar in grade school during the annual Presidential Fitness Test or magically transformed into a forensic pathologist during a frog dissection in seventh grade biology class or, worse yet, endured an uncomfortable birds and bees lesson from their parents? In her third book in the Wacky Womanhood series, Vicky DeCoster shares her latest compilation of hilarious essays that look back to a simpler time when trying new things was a way of life; bullies ruled like kings; and parents reveled in torturing tiny versions of themselves. As DeCoster recalls her side-splitting childhood, she also shares inspirational life lessons learned along the way, encouraging others to look at their own youth in a completely different way. From Diapers to Dorkville offers a refreshingly wicked glimpse into one girl's true adventures and shares how she somehow survived long enough to sashay her way straight into the wacky world of womanhood. Book Inclusion in Urban Educational Environments

Download or read book Inclusion in Urban Educational Environments written by Denise E. Armstrong and published by IAP. This book was released on 2006-06-01 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is motivated by our experiences in working with students and their families in urban communities. We are particularly concerned about the urgent imperative to address the endemic educational and societal challenges that pervade the lives of urban students, particularly those who live in poverty, are of minority and immigrant backgrounds, and are otherwise marginalized within the current educational discourses and practices. In spite of the fact that over the last 3 decades policy makers, educators and communities across the globe have called for in depth structural changes, this is rarely evidenced in the discourses, practices, and structures within academic and practitioner spheres. This reluctance, despite articulations to the contrary, can be directly linked to normative theoretical and practical perspectives that are defined by assumptions that constrain urban students within restrictive boundaries. These narrow outsider worldviews based on notions of what ought to be, combined with ignorance of the realties of students’ lives focus on deviance and deficits. They blind prospective change agents to the strengths and richness that students bring, and they delimit the transformative potential of social justice praxis within urban environments. The resulting discourse, in the form of deficit beliefs, thoughts, actions, and dialogues shapes urban research, theory, and practice. We contend that in order to counteract the debilitating impacts of these harmful constructions of urban and social justice, it is important to clarify this terminology.
