Book A History of Australia New Zealand and the Pacific

Download or read book A History of Australia New Zealand and the Pacific written by Donald Denoon and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 2000-11-17 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an arresting interpretation of the history of Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific from the earliest settlements to the present. Usually viewed in isolation, these societies are covered here in a single account, in which the authors show how the peoples of the region constructed their own identities and influenced those of their neighbours. By broadening the focus to the regional level, this volume develops analyses - of economic, social and political history - which transcend national boundaries. The result is a compelling work which both describes the aspirations of European settlers and reveals how the dispossessed and marginalized indigenous peoples negotiated their own lives as best they could. The authors demonstrate that these stories are not separate but rather strands of a single history. The Blackwell History of the World Series The goal of this ambitious series is to provide an accessible source of knowledge about the entire human past, for every curious person in every part of the world. It will comprise some two dozen volumes, of which some provide synoptic views of the history of particular regions while others consider the world as a whole during a particular period of time. The volumes are narrative in form, giving balanced attention to social and cultural history (in the broadest sense) as well as to institutional development and political change. Each provides a systematic account of a very large subject, but they are also both imaginative and interpretative. The Series is intended to be accessible to the widest possible readership, and the accessibility of its volumes is matched by the style of presentation and production.

Book excerpt: Travel Tales: Down Under -- Australia & New Zealand Is a collection of travel stories of among the travel world's most favorite destinations. Without a doubt, Australia, New Zealand also known affectionately as Downunder), as well as nearby neighboring islands of the South Pacific are to be sure among my favorite destinations in the world to visit. The travel stories in this book about this area of the world are basically divided into a number of geographic parts. When asked to share their most interesting travel tales of visits to Downunder and other nearby island nations, it is no surprise that in addition to some of the more touristy stuff, there are some interesting metaphysical-related stories of visitors to tell as well since, simply stated, this part of the world does also have its own share of the psychic and paranormal aspects that affect visitors to just about anywhere. There are also a few travelers' tales about some of the not-so-pleasant aspects of travel to these areas as well. So, it is only fitting that I provide some of these stories for you too -- be they as they may -- since these are the tales that travelers feel are important enough and therefore want to share with you. Mostly, your own Downunder travels will typically be interesting, exciting, rewarding, safe, and without incident, but odd and unpleasant things can and do happen on rare occasions in your travels, and visiting the Southern Pacific is certainly no exception. To be sure, with its marvelous food and drink, artwork, architecture, museums, and magnificent natural scenery, Downunder with its great cities and natural vistas has so much to offer. It is also one of our purposes of the True Travel Tales series to provide a cross-section of travel life in the world's most popular cities and countries, but along with the good comes occasionally a portion of the bad as well. In the True Travel Tales series, we aim to pull no punches. You'll see the good and best sides of the world and its cities as well as some of the rarer possibly negative and regrettable travel aspects in this area of the world as well.

Book A Companion to Philosophy in Australia New Zealand

Download or read book A Companion to Philosophy in Australia New Zealand written by Graham Oppy and published by Philosophy. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophy in Australia and New Zealand has been experiencing something of a †̃golden ageâ€TM. Within this, the richness of Australasiaâ€TMs philosophical past, though less well known, should not be forgotten: Australasian philosophy includes much distinctive and highly original work. The Companion contains a wide range of articles by prominent philosophers and scholars, as well as important contributions by those outside academia. As well as longer essays on selected philosophers, philosophical topics and controversies, there are shorter entries on associations, research centres, departments, journals, pedagogy and international links. Philosophyâ€TMs recent inroads into the wider community are also highlighted. A Companion to Philosophy in Australia and New Zealand provides scholars and the wider community with a greater appreciation of the philosophical heritage of this region, and will be a standard work of reference for many years to come. “Judicious and authoritativeâ€? – Graham Priest.

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1876 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER III. LAND. I Have said that Adelaide has been called a city of churches. It has also been nicknamed the Farinaceous City. A little gentle ridicule is no doubt intended to be conveyed by the word. The colony by the sister colonies is regarded as one devoted in a special manner to the production of flour. Men who spend their energy in the pursuit of gold consider the growing of wheat to be a poor employment. And again the squatters, or wool-producers of Australia, who are great men, with large flocks, and with acres of land at their command so enormous that they have to be counted, not by acres, but by square miles, look down from a very great height indeed upon the little agriculturists, --small men, who generally live from hand to mouth, --and whose original occupation of their holdings has commonly been supposed to be at variance with the squatters' interests. The agriculturists of Australia generally are free-selecters, men who have bought bits here and bits there off the squatters' runs, and have bought the best bits, --men, too, whose neighbourhood, for reasons explained before, has not been a source of comfort to the squatters generally. In this way agriculture generally, and especially the growing of wheat-crops for sale, has not been regarded in the colonies as it is certainly regarded at home. The farmers of South Australia are usually called "cockatoos,"--a name which prevails also, though less universally, in the other colonies. The word cockatoo in the farinaceous colony has become so common as almost to cease to carry with it the intended sarcasm. A man will tell you of himself that he is a cockatoo, and when doing so will probably feel some justifiable pride in the freehold possession of his acres. But the name has...
