Book excerpt: Comedia de la libertad de Espana por Bernardo del Carpio, a play written in 1579 by Juan de la Cueva, is based upon events in the life of the legendary hero of the Spanish Middle Ages. Professor Burton demonstrates in this first complete study of the play that Cueva goes beyond the mere presentation of Bernardo del Carpio and his victory over Charlemagne and the French army at Roncesvalles. The study is important in the criticism of the early Spanish Theater because it shows that Cueva imbued his play with many levels of meaning, as the exultation of a national hero, as a political allegory of Philip lI's attempt to add Portugal to the Spanish crown, as a triumph of virtue over vice, and, at its heart, as a statement of faith in which forgiveness and the promise of redemption follow sin and repentance. "Burton deserves thanks for his interesting analysis of Cueva's style. Future Bernardo studies will have to take this work into consideration."-Anthony J. Cardenas, Journal of Hispanic Philology."

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bernardo Del Carpio: An Historical Novel of the Eighth Century One of the gentlemen was distinguished from the rest by his noble air, and by the splendour of his ancestral badges. Beneath a bohemio, or short cloak, furred with ermine, he wore a doublet of cloth of silver upon a green ground well-fitted hose, a hat with feathers, fastened by a brooch of diamonds, and buskins of morocco; in his hand was a javelin, a hunter's cutlass at his girdle, and upon his breast the red riband of knighthood, insignia which, in former times, almost always denoted a person of the royal line. In fact, the person we have been describing was no other than Alfonso the Second, called the Chaste, King of Leon and Asturias, who flourished near the end of the eighth century, and who, with the very limited resources which his reduced king dom afforded, not only knew how to preserve his independence from the Moors of Spain, but also to obtain signal victories over his enemies abroad. Book The Formation and Transmission of the Legend of Bernardo Del Carpio

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation analyzes the origins and transmission of the legend of Bernardo del Carpio, a fictitious epic hero from medieval Iberia. I base my study primarily on the accounts of Bernardo's tale found in three thirteenth-century chronicles, two of which were composed in Latin and one in Castilian: Lucas de Tuy's Chronicon mundi (c. 1239), Rodrigo Jiménez de Rada's De rebus Hispaniae (1243), and Alfonso X's Estoria de España. I also address the brief account of the hero's deeds found in the historical introduction of the Poema de Fernán González (c. 1250). Lastly, I discuss a selection of sixteenth-century romances (Spanish ballads), which are witnesses to the legend's continued development in the Early Modern period. In Chapter 1, I consider previous scholarship on the origins of Bernardo's legend within the broader context of the formation and diffusion of the Spanish epic. Taking into consideration past theories regarding the genesis of Bernardo's legend, I propose that two independent tales about two different heroes' one from the Pyrenees and one from Castile-León - merged to give way to the thirteenth-century legend. This hypothesis lays the groundwork for the discussions in subsequent chapters. Chapters 2 and 3 consist of an exhaustive analysis of the medieval chronicles that contain Bernardo's narrative. Using textual evidence from these chronicles, I put forward that the Pyrenean legend would have been transmitted through songs and poems (cantares), while the Castilian-Leonese would have been known through a prose account (estoria). None of these sources have been preserved in writing. I discuss the cultural conditions that would have led to the compositions of the now-lost source materials, hypothesize their content, and address how they would have been utilized by the chroniclers. In Chapter 4, I address Bernardo's legend in narrative poetry (the Poema de Fernán González and the Romancero), considering how previous sources and individual innovation shaped the poetic accounts of the hero's deeds. In doing so, this dissertation offers the first in-depth theory regarding the medieval origins, transmission, and adaptations of the legend of Bernardo del Carpio.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Carpio: A Tragedy in Five Acts The story of Bernardo del Carpio has at all times been a favourite one with the dramatists and poets of Spain - no less than seven tragedies (as we are told), and innumerable ballads having been composed on the subject in the language of that country. With the tragedies I have no acquaintance whatever; but there cannot be more resem blance between them and the present Work than is the necessary consequence of the same story being treated by the authors of each: and my knowledge of the ballads is solely derived from perusing Lockhart' s highly spirited translations. Although the exploits of Carpio, and other matters dealt with in this drama, have been put forth by many historians as matters of fact, others have gone so far as even to deny that our hero ever had a physical existence. With this let the learned deal. But it was clearly my duty to avoid falsifying any known historical fact: and I have, therefore, among other things, rejected (notwithstanding its effective ness) the obvious anachronism of representing Carpio as the hero of Roncesvalles, and the slayer of the immortal Rolando; the battle in question having been fought thirteen years before Alfonso the Chaste ascended the Asturian throne, and the events of this drama being sup posed to occur in the latter portion of his reign.
