Book Culinary Lesson The Space of Food

Download or read book Culinary Lesson The Space of Food written by Charlotte Birnbaum and published by AADR – Art Architecture Design Research. This book was released on 2018-10-15 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CULINARY LESSONS - The Space of Food is based on a series of events, Culinary Lessons, which were hosted by the Städelschule Architecture Class and which engaged with the relation between food, art and architecture. The series addressed the enormous so- cial, economic and cultural spaces that accompany the production and consumption of food, and attempted to unravel some of these spaces' structure and dynamics. The central ambition was to learn from culinary history and, not the least, the recent vanguard of culinary practice. No human activity is so encompassing and engenders such ef- fects on our societies and lives as the culinary. Culinary practices lay out aesthetic as much as ethical trajectories that span from century-old traditions to lifesaving experiments for the present and future. They provide for human sustenance and the highest form of bodily enjoyment while transversing the spaces that they at once produce and profoundly affect. This fourth issue of the SAC JOURNAL presents the central con- versation in Culinary Lessons, which took place in Venice, together with a series of texts and projects that chart and speculate on the relationship between architecture, art and the culinary wor- ld. Contributors to this issue include, amongst others, Charlotte Birnbaum, Daniel Birnbaum, Mike Bouchet, Sanford Kwinter, Fabrice Mazliah, Tobias Rehberger, David Ruy, Kivi Sotamaa, Carolyn Steel, Jan Åman and Johan Bettum. It also features the winning projects of the AIV Master Thesis Prize in 2015 and 2016. SAC JOURNAL is a publication series that addresses topical isues within architecture. The journal documents, critically reviews and presents theoretical discussions concerning contemporary design and research. The content of SAC JOURNAL is produced by invited contributors and students and faculty at the Städel- schule Architecture Class.

Download or read book Benedikt Partenheimer written by David Campany and published by Hatje Cantz Verlag. This book was released on 2021-01-01 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Art and Society 1972 2022 2072 written by Anton Biebl and published by Hatje Cantz Verlag. This book was released on 2023-12-13 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the advent of modernity, art has been associated with freedom, provocation and courage. In 1972, art was to unfold its potential as an emancipatory and creative force as part of the Gesamtkunstwerk of the XX. Olympic Games in Munich—according to the grand vision of its planners. The international avant-garde of the time, including Walter de Maria, Gerhard Richter, Andy Warhol and Dan Flavin, enthusiastically developed revolutionary concepts. Many of these remained in draft-form. After the tragic assassination of Israeli athletes, concepts such as the "Spielstraße" were canceled. This publication is the first to give an impression of the playful, participatory cultural programme of 1972. In the second part of the book, a multitude of voices from all over the world look to the future. International authors and artists use contemporary examples to convey the importance of the arts in shaping the democratic society of the future.

Book excerpt: Crossing Cheshire Bridge is an alluring look into the intimate relationship between the people who work, live and play on Cheshire Bridge Road and the places they traverse. These photographs trace a decade of unlikely connections bridged together by this infamous one-mile road. At first glance, the photographs might seem like an exploration of otherness within a seedy place that is censured by the surrounding affluent residential community and suburbs, but it is quite the opposite. The photographs reveal deep personal connections that provide a glimpse into their lives. Their untold stories open a door to countless insights of human behavior. Cheshire Bridge Road pre-dates the city of Atlanta. Cheshire Bridge Road was originally a farming corridor that attracted settlers in the early 1800's. It remained agricultural until the early 20th century, when suburban development and commerce moved into the area. By the 1970's, the more affluent residents began moving further from Atlanta, creating opportunities for low rent businesses. This iconic road is famous for having many adult entertainment establishments. Many of these places are known as Atlanta's Red Light District. Recently rediscovered, the road is an attractive infill location between Atlanta's two largest employment areas, Buckhead and Midtown. Businesses, where the same people have work for decades, are being destroyed to make way for high-end apartments and mixed-use properties. Sadly, Cheshire Bride Road is on the way to becoming gentrified.

Book Spatial Transformations

Download or read book Spatial Transformations written by Angela Million and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-10-17 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Open Access version of this book, available at http://www.taylorfrancis.com/books/e/9781003036159, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives 4.0 license. This book examines a variety of subjective spatial experiences and knowledge production practices in order to shed new light on the specifics of contemporary socio-spatial change, driven as it is by inter alia, digitalization, transnationalization, and migration. Considering the ways in which emerging spatial phenomena are conditioned by an increasing interconnectedness, this book asks how spaces are changing as a result of mediatization, increased mobility, globalization, and social dislocation. With attention to questions surrounding the negotiation and (visual) communication of space, it explores the arrangements, spatialities, and materialities that underpin the processes of spatial refiguration by which these changes come about. Bringing together the work of leading scholars from across diverse range disciplines to address questions of socio-spatial transformation, this volume will appeal to sociologists and geographers, as well as scholars and practitioners of urban planning and architecture.

Book excerpt: First edition, 75 signed and numbered copies60 color photographs, 104 pages, 10 x 9Route 1 is the longest north/south road in the U.S., running 2,370 miles from the Canadian border in Fort Kent, ME to Key West, FL. Inspired by Berenice Abbott's 1954 project, I decided to photograph along Route 1 in its entirety, which I undertook during 2020-2022. My dog Java was my companion.Route 1 passes through rural areas, small towns and cities. Its landscapes include seashores, pine forests, industrial centers, strip malls, housing developments and farmland. You see Walmarts, Autozones, 7-Elevens, American flags, churches, vacant stores, cheap motels and pickup trucks. Route 1 can be a congested two lane road with stop lights every half mile, or a one lane road cutting through hundreds of miles of nothing. In traveling this road you witness much of the country's diversity. Being on the road was often difficult and lonely. Night after night in a strange bed, eating alone, exhausted after driving for 8 or more hours became oppressive. But my curiosity, the people I met, and places and things I discovered stimulated me and kept me motivated.Eventually I found that by looking closely and staying open there is beauty all around - the everyday and ordinary are actually extraordinary. This is what I celebrate with these images made along Route 1. I came across a sign in Raleigh, NC that captures the essence of what I discovered and which continues to motivate me: Fill Your Life With Strange Beautiful Things.
